Harut Sassounian: A Dictator obsessed with power & wealth: Erdogan’s 12 scandals!

November 9, 2016 By administrator

harut-sasssounian-wallyWith each passing day, Turkish President Erdogan is becoming increasingly dictatorial. The arrest of 11 members of the opposition pro-Kurdish party, HDP, is the latest in a long string of Erdogan’s dictatorial policies.

Michael Rubin, a former Pentagon official and resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, wrote a devastating exposé on Erdogan last week, listing some of his scandalous actions!

I have summarized Rubin’s lengthy article which was posted on Newsweek magazine’s European edition website, under the title, “Twelve Questions Turkish Journalists Dare not Ask”:

1. How did Erdogan become a billionaire?
Erdogan was raised in a poor family until he became Mayor of Istanbul when he faced 13 corruption probes. In 2004, when he was Prime Minister, the U.S. embassy in Ankara reported in a cable to Washington that “he had at least eight Swiss bank accounts.” In addition, secret phone recordings revealed his instructions “to liquidate perhaps a billion dollars in cash. Erdogan used his power over the courts to quash the case and arrest prosecutors and judges who sought to pursue it.”

2. Where is Erdogan’s university diploma?
Erdogan claims to have graduated from Istanbul’s Marmara University in 1981. His degree may have been forged. “A four-year degree is a prerequisite for the presidency. If Erdogan lied about having a degree, can he remain as president?”

3. Is there another story behind the coup attempt?
Erdogan fired and jailed thousands of his political opponents, accusing them of being the followers of Fethullah Gulen, the alleged mastermind of the July 15 coup attempt, which the Turkish President called “a gift from God.”

4. If there is a FETO, is there also an ETO?
Erdogan called Gulen’s movement “the Fethullahist Terror Organization (FETO)…. If it is permissible to talk about FETO as a terror group, would it be equally acceptable to refer to the Erdoganist Terror Organization (ETO)?”

5. If Gulen is a terrorist, why did Erdogan work with him till 2013?
Gulen and Erdogan had practically identical religious philosophies until their split in 2013. Why is Gulen a ‘terrorist’ now?

6. Why is it OK to report on PKK attacks but not on ISIS?
“When the PKK or fringe Kurdish groups attack, it often dominates the headlines in Turkey for days as the investigation continues, authorities name suspects, etc…. But when ISIS has attacked, the Turkish government has put an embargo on reports about the investigation.”

7. Why did Turkish intelligence help the Nusra Front? And ISIS?
“Evidence is overwhelming that both the Nusra Front, an Al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria, and ISIS itself, have received arms, support and equipment from authorities in Turkey. When journalists broke the story — and provided photographic evidence — Erdogan’s response was to arrest the editor of the newspaper that published the scoop. Likewise, when Turkish soldiers stopped an arms shipment into Syria, Erdogan ordered the soldiers’ arrest rather than the smugglers….”

8. Was a Turkish death squad behind the Paris assassinations?
“In 2013, assassins executed three Kurdish activists in their office in Paris. All three were PKK members…. The French captured Omer Guney, a 32-year-old Turk who had arrived in France at age 9.Telephone intercepts after the murders show him calling back to handlers in Turkey’s intelligence agency….”

9. Why did Erdogan appoint his son-in-law oil minister?
“Berat Albayrak, Erdogan’s 37-year-old son-in-law, became Turkey’s energy minister on November 24, 2015. Was he the best qualified? Or were other factors at play?”

10. Can we talk about Erdogan’s associations?
Erdogan is a close friend of Yasin al-Qadi, a Saudi businessman, who, according to the U.S. Treasury Department “had alleged ties to Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden until 2014.” Erdogan persistently declared: “I know Mr. Qadi. I believe in him as I believe in myself. For Mr. Qadi to associate with a terrorist organization, or support one, is impossible.” Erdogan is also close to Gulbuddin Hekmatyar of Afghanistan who has “allied himself with the Taliban and Al-Qaeda.” Another friend, Khalid Meshaal (the militant leader of Hamas), visited Turkey as Erdogan’s personal guest!

11. What deal have you struck with Putin?
After Erdogan and Putin buried the hatchet earlier this year, they agreed on a pipeline deal and held talks on the Turkish purchase of a Russian missile system. Were there any secret agreements?

12. What explains the court’s 2008 refusal to close the AKP?
In 2008, Turkey’s constitutional court came close to dissolving Erdogan’s ruling party. But, at the last-minute, one justice switched his vote. It is alleged that “a businessman, long hounded by Erdogan, wired money into that justice’s account just before the vote.”

During a Nov. 6 ceremony in Istanbul to receive an honorary doctorate, Erdogan proudly proclaimed: “I don’t care if they call me a dictator or whatever else. It goes in one ear, out the other!”

November 4, 2016 By administrator

pkk-turkeyAt least nine people were killed and more than 100 were wounded in an attack by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the Bağlar district of the southeastern province of Diyarbakır early on Nov. 4.

“Two police officers and five citizens, one of whom was a technician, have lost their lives. One terrorist was apprehended dead,” Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım told journalists at a press briefing, adding that a bomb-laden car was detonated by the militants.

“Separatist terrorism has shown its baseless, disgusting face once again in Diyarbakır. Among the over hundred wounded, 93 have been released from hospital and the treatment of seven others is ongoing,” Yıldırım added.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called Diyarbakır Mayor Hüseyin Aksoy, recently appointed by Ankara after elected mayor Gültan Kışanak was removed from office, to receive information regarding the attack.

“We won’t surrender to terror. Those who are linked to terror organizations will account for it,” Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmuş wrote on his Twitter account.

According to a statement issued by the Diyarbakır Governor’s Office, PKK militants claimed responsibility for the attack, which left massive damage on the buildings around the explosion scene. The statement added that the attack was carried out near the police headquarters in a very crowded area.

The Mosul operation and the latest situation in the region. Turkish Trained “Hashdi Vatani” Terrorist near Mosul

October 14, 2016 By administrator

hashdi-vataniThe liberation of Mosul is not going to happen in the short term. Even if the operation starts, the “Mosul Issue” will continue. And in conjunction, the military, political and diplomatic tensions will deepen.

KIRKUK – ANF – AMED DİCLE

As the discussions on the operation on Mosul continue, so do military activity and dispatching in the region. The Iraqi army has started significant military dispatching especially from the Kirkuk line towards the Hawija front.

There were intense aerial attacks and helicopter activity in the same region yesterday (October 13). Hawija is considered the most important gate for the liberation of Mosul.

The dispatching towards Hawija is an important development, but it doesn’t necessarily mean an operation on Mosul. Some sources say the operation will start in the last 10 days of October, but the military and political developments on the ground are not suitable for this operation yet. The conditions have yet to be met.

It looks like the political consensus and military preparation for the liberation of Mosul will take some time. The question of how Mosul will be taken from ISIS and who will control it after it’s been taken hasn’t been answered yet. The issue is not resolved at the tables, and therefore can’t be reflected on the battle field. The military force that can carry out such an operation has not been formed yet in any case.

REASONS PREVENTING THE OPERATION

There are three basic factors that constitute obstacles for the Mosul operation and thus allow the ISIS invasion to continue.

One: Conflict of interest among local, regional and international forces, and political and diplomatic disagreements they cause.

Two: The threat from Turkey and its local partners towards the region.

Three: More than one million civilians in the operation grounds. Protecting these civilians and relocating them to safe zones.

One can list many more issues as continuation on these three fundamental topics. The big picture emerges more clearly when the positions from each party is analyzed.

THE US AND THE INTERNATIONAL COALITION

The preparations for the possible operation on Mosul are carried out by the coalition led by the US. The US is in contact with all parties in the region but the Baghdad administration is stated as the political respondent. For the US, conducting an operation on ISIS is bigger than gathering the forces in the region around a table and “convincing” them. They want a joint operation with the Shias, Sunnis, Kurds and other forces. They want Mosul to be controlled by Baghdad. And as always, they are trying to pose themselves as the “saviour power” to consolidate their interests in the region. The coalition isn’t acting independently from Washington politics.

THE BAGHDAD ADMINISTRATION

Abadi’s government naturally works in harmony with the US and Iran. They accept Iran’s Heshti Shabi militia forces to take part in the operation to some extent. They also have an agreement with the Southern Kurdistan administration. Although they have not officially announced this yet, Baghdad also accepts some local regional forces trained by the PKK guerrillas to take part in the operation. The duty of these forces is to protect the lands they live on and to push back the ISIS threat.

TURKEY

Turkey is in a position to pose a great threat to the current situation in Mosul and its future. The soldiers they have stationed in Bashiqa and the groups called Hashdi Vatani they have trained are as dangerous as ISIS. Turkey wants Mosul to be turned over to Sunni Arab forces called Hashdi Vatani. These groups are ideologically no different than ISIS. In several areas, they are mixed with ISIS and they are in alliance.

Ankara’s only ally in Mosul are the Nuceyfis, family of the former Governor of Mosul. They organized the Hashdi Vatani over the Nuceyfi family and their contacts. Former Mosul Governor Asil Nuceyfi is the man who turned the city over to ISIS in one night. Asil Nuceyfi had met with Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara one week before he handed Mosul over to ISIS. He stayed in Hewler, Ankara and Istanbul after the invasion of Mosul.

The men Turkey calls “Mosulis we trained” are the Hashdi Vatani, and they are loyal to the former governor Asil Nuceyfi who was removed from duty by the Baghdad administration. They have no official standing in Iraq. Turkey wants to control Mosul over these groups.

At the base of Turkey’s Mosul politics, there are of course the Kurds. The Turkish administration wants to update the Ankara Treaty made with the UK in 1926. There is only one condition at the heart of this treaty: There should be no Kurds in Mosul, the city should remain in the control of Sunni Arabs.

But in the current situation, no force in the region, nor the Baghdad administration, Iran, US or the Coalition, want Turkey to take part in the Mosul operation. Turkey not taking part in the operation means them losing their influence over the region too. The only groups that want Turkey there are the KDP and the Nuceyfis. Turkey taking part in the operation under such circumstances will not bring stability to the region, on the contrary, it will make things worse. Not taking part will be a bigger obsession. In either case, Turkey loses.

IRAN

Iran is involved in the Mosul case over Baghdad, they have to. Iran will never accept the Sunni forces backed by Turkey to control Mosul. Iran must have influence over Mosul, even if they don’t control it. If they lose in Mosul, they will have lost in Iraq in general. Iran’s influence will only be limited to Baghdad, Basra and partially in Southern Kurdistan. This will hurt Iran’s position in the region. In the current situation, there is no serious and vocal opposition to Iran being in Mosul.

SOUTHERN KURDISTAN

Southern Kurdistan administration is fragmented on the Mosul operation. PUK forces are more in line with the Baghdad administration, while KDP conducts Turkey-guided politics. This position of the KDP hurts the Kurds in general. There have been some meetings among Kurds for the KDP to leave this position, but these have not yielded results yet. If KDP continues to be in Turkey’s shadow over Mosul, they will lose big. And this will be harmful for Kurds. Another effort by the KDP is to prevent PKK forces taking part in the Mosul operation.

THE PKK AND DEMOCRATIC MOSUL

PKK guerrillas are positioned in Kirkuk and to the south. With them are a large group of guerrilla forces to fight ISIS in the Maxmur region. The guerrilla forces that moved to the region to liberate Shengal from ISIS remain in their positions. The guerrilla forces state that they will take part in the Mosul operation if there is an agreement.

If there is an operation in the Hawija region, the guerrilla forces will play an effective role there. This is because of the fact that it isn’t realistic to carry out a military operation against ISIS in the region without the guerrilla. The same is true for the Tal Afar front in the Shengal direction. Due to their positions, it is imperative that the PKK forces or the local forces trained by the guerrilla take part in this operation.

The Baghdad administration is rumored to want PKK to take part in the operation. But the opposition from Turkey and Iran in this matter puts Baghdad in a difficult position. Then again, it is said that the Shengal forces who came together around Öcalan’s ideology and formed their defense units and some other groups will be taking part in the operation, and that they are preparing for it. PKK offers the other Kurdish forces that Kurds take part in the Mosul operation under a “Joint Command”, but the KDP’s negative approach causes Kurds to miss this opportunity. Despite all, PKK is trying to minimise all tension with the KDP to avoid falling into Ankara’s trap.

PKK sources have a perspective for the future of Mosul. According to this, the administration should be left to the locals after Mosul has been liberated. They propose a “Democratic Mosul” model that will include all groups, like Sunnis, Shias, Kurds, Arabs, Turkmens, and others to remove the current conflicts and clashes.

In summary: The liberation of Mosul is not going to happen in the short term. Even if the operation starts, the “Mosul Issue” will continue. And in conjunction, the military, political and diplomatic tensions will deepen.

The armed wing of the PKK assassinates Erdogan AKP politician

October 12, 2016 By administrator

By Rudaw

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region—The armed wing of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) assassinated a Turkish politician from the ruling party, the third such killing in the past month.

The People’s Defense Forces (HPG) released a statement on Tuesday saying that they had “punished” Deryan Aktert, the district chairman of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Dicle, Diyarbakir, “for his role in the massacre and killings of the AKP.”

Aktert was shot in his office Monday morning, the provincial governor’s office confirmed.

On Sunday, Aydın Muştu, the AKP’s district deputy leader in the Özalp district of Van, was shot and killed.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım denounced the killings.

“The PKK terror group has turned toward the AK Party organizations. The other day our Özalp deputy district head was slaughtered at his home, in front of his wife and children. Last night, our Dicle district head was killed at his own business,” he said during the AKP’s weekly parliamentary group meeting.

“The traitors should know this: The AK Party will not be defeated by your actions. Our government will pursue all incidents with determination to clear our country of all terror organizations.”

Figen Yüksekdag, co-chair of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, issued a statement condemning the killing “in the harshest terms.”

On September 14, Ahmet Budak, the AKP’s candidate in Hakkari in the November 2015 elections, was shot outside his home in Semdinli.

In a statement claiming responsibility, the HPG warned, “This action is a warning to all Kurds who collaborates [sic] with AKP government. All our people who do not want to be the instruments of genocidal policies should separate themselves from the AKP. Those who participate of genocidal [sic] activities will be targeted by our guerrilla forces.”

September 7, 2016 By administrator

86-turkish-soldiers-killedBEHDINAN – ANF

HPG Press Office announced the results of the Turkish military operation, clashes and guerrilla actions around Mount Tendürek.

The detailed statement by HPG recalled that Turkish army had started an expansive operation with the participation of thousands of soldiers in the area of Mount Tendürek located between Van’s Çaldıran district and Ağrı’s Doğubeyazıt district on August 30.

HPG said the operation was carried out with bombardments by howitzers, mortars and tanks on the ground and helicopters and fighters jets on the air.

HPG underlined that the operation aimed at an annihilation of guerrilla forces in the area, but it has failed and Turkish army has suffered heavy losses.

UNIT OF SELF-SACRIFICE DESTROYED THE OPERATION COMMAND

HPG statement remarked that the operation was launched on August 30 with mortar, howitzer and tank bombardments in addition to the military forces deployed in a number of locations across the rural area within the operation zone.

At 06:30 on September 1, guerrillas hit the soldiers entering the operation zone, which left 7 soldiers dead and 8 others wounded.

Guerrillas later fastened the emplacement of the military unit commanding and coordinating the operation, and a unit of self-sacrifice carried out an action against this point where high-ranking soldiers were positioned. One first lieutenant and two lieutenants were killed here. HPG guerrilla named Mahir, who was leading the unit, lost his life during a clash with soldiers in another disguised emplacement. Guerrillas later hit this emplacement as well, as a result of which 3 more soldiers were killed. The number of wounded soldiers couldn’t be clarified.

DOZENS OF SOLDIERS ENCIRCLED AND KILLED

At 10:00, guerrilla units hit a group of 40 soldiers who attempted to intervene the scene after soldiers lost the control over the area. 13 soldiers were killed and 10 others were wounded in this action, rendering the Turkish troops unable to move after all their attempts were foiled.

At 09:00 the same morning, another guerrilla unit hit two groups of soldiers trying to enter the Kır area from Deriyê Dasına, leaving 3 soldiers dead and 5 others wounded.

In another action, guerrillas encircled and hit two other military units that tried to enter the Kır area from Martyr Dıjwar territory. 14 soldiers were killed and 15 were wounded in this area where clashes lasted till the evening hours.

Guerrillas later carried out an action targeting an emplacement where 8 soldiers were positioned. The results of the strikes couldn’t be clarified though.

COBRA HELICOPTERS REPELLED

A Cobra helicopter heading towards the area for intervention was also hit by guerrillas with heavy weapons, rendered ineffective and forced to leave the area with damage. During the evening hours, guerrillas hit and damaged 2 more Cobra helicopters as they started to move towards the scene for intervention. Turkish forces bombarded the area with mortar and howitzer fire till the morning hours of September 2 after all their movement area was restricted and taken under control by guerrillas.

SOLDIERS ENCIRCLED AND HIT FROM THREE SIDES

During the morning hours of September 2, Turkish military units moving from Martyr Baxtiyar area from three sides attempted to break the guerrillas’ siege and retrieve the dead and wounded soldiers from the area. All the three groups were encircled and hit by guerrillas during the following hours, as a result of which 13 soldiers were killed and more than 10 others were wounded.

While sporadic clashes in this area continued till the evening hours, Cobra type helicopters hit the Turkish soldiers as they intervened the scene, and the number of soldiers killed by these strikes couldn’t be clarified. A guerrilla named Eylem fell fighting in this area.

At 17:00 the same day, another military unit of 45 soldiers attempted to intervene the area under the siege of guerrillas. Guerrillas hit this unit from three sides with rockets, bombs and heavy weapons. Guerrillas on the other hand hit a Cobra helicopter with heavy weapons as it intervened the fighting which lasted 45 minutes, during which 30 soldiers were killed and 10 others were heavily wounded.

One guerrilla named Sipan got seriously wounded during the clashes, and fell a martyr later.

BODIES OF OVER 20 SOLDIERS REMAINED IN CLASHES AREA FOR 4 DAYS

Bodies of 20 soldiers from the operational units remained in the clashes area for 4 days and Turkish army suffered further losses as a result of every intervention attempted by their side. Wounded soldiers managed to flee the area by taking advantage of the intense bombardments conducted by Turkish forces at the end of the 4th day. Turkish army heavily bombed the area with jets, helicopters, howitzers, mortars and tanks after the escape of soldiers, and this aggression continued till the evening hours of September 5.

HPG pointed out that Turkish army resorted to civilians in order to retrieve the bodies of soldiers from the operation zone, and soldiers left many munitions behind.

HPG stated that the actions by HPG and YJA-Star guerrillas during this operation were carried out in response to the denial of access to Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan.

Three guerrillas, named Mahir, Sipan and Eylem, fell as martyrs whilst putting up a brave fight, and their detailed ID information will be announced later.

Nearly a dozen Turkish soldiers have been killed during separate clean-up operations against Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK)  in Turkey’s restive eastern provinces of Mardin and Van.

Military officials said three soldiers were killed after Kurdish forces attacked a military post in the Dargecit district of Mardin Province, situated about 1,100 kilometers (683 miles) east of the capital, Ankara, on Friday.

The unnamed officials added that three village guards and a civilian also sustained gunshot wounds during the assault.

Separately, eight soldiers lost their lives during fierce exchanges of gunfire with PKK members in a mountainous area of the eastern Turkish province of Van.

The Turkish General Staff also said in a statement that 33 PKK militants had been killed and 30 others injured after Turkish government forces launched a series of aerial and ground operations against the Kurds’ positions in the southeastern Turkish province of Hakkari.

Turkish military forces have been conducting ground operations as well as airstrikes against PKK positions in Turkey’s troubled southeastern border region and Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region over the past year.

The campaign began following the July 2015 bombing in the southern Turkish town of Suruc, which claimed more than 30 civilian lives. Turkish officials held the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group responsible for the act of terror.

PKK militants, who accuse the Ankara government of supporting Daesh, launched a string of supposed reprisal attacks against Turkish security forces after the bomb attack, in turn prompting the Turkish military operations.

The Turkish military recently attacked Kurdish positions inside Syria in a ground incursion as well.
