Bulgaria on Dec. 13 shut its busy border crossing with Turkey as 14 customs officials were detained in an anti-corruption raid, chief prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov said.

“All customs officers from the morning shift, who control the entries into Bulgaria at the Kapitan Andreevo (border checkpoint) were detained within a probe against contraband,” Tsatsarov told public BNR radio.

“We apologise to travellers” over the closure, he said, adding that traffic from Bulgaria to Turkey was flowing uninterrupted.

Kapitan Andreevo is the largest and busiest border checkpoint in the Balkans and a major crossing point on the route between Europe and the Middle East.

BNR reported that a queue a dozen kilometres long of trucks, waiting to enter Bulgaria, had formed the Turkish side.

Bulgaria’s state security agency DANS conducted about 100 raids in five towns close to the border, Tsatsarov added, without giving further details about the aim of the raids.

The radio meanwhile said the probe was targeting a major cigarette smuggling ring.

Bulgaria’s position at Europe’s exterior border makes it a major crossroads on the route of goods smugglers and human traffickers.

Migrants are also regularly caught at Kapitan Andreevo and other checkpoints, trying to cross into Europe hidden inside trucks.

Cigarette smuggling is another lucrative business with a major ring dismantled last March.

Thousands Protest in Baghdad Against Terrorist State of Turkey Deployment of Turkish Troops to Iraq

December 12, 2015 By administrator

1031655818Thousands of protesters, including  members of Iraq’s Shiite paramilitary forces, gathered in downtown Baghdad on Saturday demanding the pullout of Turkish troops from the country, local TV Alsumaria reported.

Turkey sent troops and tanks to a base in northern Iraq last week  setting off an angry diplomatic row with Baghdad.

Ankara insists it deployed forces near Mosul to protect military instructors working with Iraqi soldiers at the base, but Baghdad demands their immediate withdrawal and brought the matter before the UN Security Council.

Saturday’s protest rally in Baghdad was initiated by paramilitary groups of the Hashad al-Shaabi, or Popular Mobilization Forces, dominated by Iran-backed Shiite militias.

“As the leader of a military brigade, I am not fully satisfied with the government’s action, and we are here to say that Iraq’s patience has run out,” Ali Rubaie, the commander of a unit  stationed west of Baghdad, told AFP on Saturday.

The demonstration was mostly attended by young men in military uniforms and was well organized, with large processions converging on Tahrir Square in central Baghdad.

ISIL leader’s ex-wife released in prisoner swap, wants to go to Turkey

December 1, 2015 By administrator

ISIS leader wifeAl-Qaeda’s Syrian wing, the Nusra Front, released 16 Lebanese soldiers and policemen held captive since August, 2014 on Tuesday in a Qatari-mediated deal that also secured freedom for a jailed ex-wife of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

The Nusra Front seized the Lebanese during an attack on the border town of Arsal mounted together with ISIL which is still believed to be holding nine soldiers captured in the incursion.

Live TV footage from the border area between Lebanon and Syria showed the Lebanese captives in vehicles accompanied by masked men armed with assault rifles and waving the Nusra Front flag before they were released to the Red Cross.

Thirteen Islamists in Lebanese jails, including Saja al-Dulaimi, the ex-wife of Baghdadi, were also released. Dulaimi, fully veiled, was shown in live TV footage from the area with her three children who were with her in prison.

Nusra Front fighters were shown kissing and hugging the sons of Dulaimi, who was arrested by the Lebanese authorities a year ago. Speaking to Al Jazeera, she said her wish was to return to Beirut and then to leave to Turkey.

“We accomplished the entire agreement with Nusra. We received our heroic soldiers and we are on our way back to Beirut,” top Lebanese security official Abbas Ibrahim, who oversaw the swap, told Reuters by telephone.

“This joy not complete until the return of those kidnapped by Daesh. We are ready to negotiate with Daesh if we find someone to negotiate with,” he said. Daesh is an Arabic name for ISIL.

The Nusra Front fighters chanted “God is great” as they arrived with the captives in preparation for the swap. One of the captives, interviewed by Al Jazeera, said the group had treated them well.

Nusra has killed four of the captives.

“Praise be to God. The joy cannot be described,” another of the captives told Al Jazeera.

The exchange began with the Nusra Front releasing the body of one of the Lebanese soldiers it had killed in captivity, Mohamed Hamieh.

Qatar has been involved in efforts to mediate the release of the captives for a year or more. A previous effort to secure their release broke down a year ago after one of the captives was killed.

Russia Imposes Economic Restrictions Against Turkey After Downing of Su-24

November 28, 2015 By administrator

1030792332Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on Saturday to boost national security and introduce economic measures against Turkey, the Kremlin press service said.

“Russian President V.V. Putin has signed a Decree ‘On Measures to Guarantee National Security in the Russian Federation and Protect Russian Citizens Against Criminal and Other Illegal Actions, and on Special Economic Measures Against the Turkish Republic,” the statement said.

The visa-free regime between the countries will be partially suspended after January 1, 2016. The measure does not concern Turkish nationals who have a temporary or permanent resident permit, as well as Turkish staff of diplomatic or consular missions in Russia and their families.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has been ordered to notify Ankara about these changes, the statement added.

On Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the Russian government had reached a decision to suspend the free-visa regime between Russia and Turkey due to security concerns.

The move comes as Russia started to question Ankara’s commitment to the fight against terrorism following the downing of a Russian Su-24 bomber on Tuesday by the Turkish Air Force over Syria.

Russian travel agencies will have to stop selling tours to Turkey, according to the Kremlin. The directive is part of a decree that aims to boost Russia’s national security.

“Travel operators and agencies should refrain from selling tourist products to Russian citizens that involves going to the Turkish Republic.”

Charter air transportation between Russia and Turkey will also be banned.

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the incident would negatively affect all aspects of relations between Moscow and Ankara and recommended Russians to refrain from visiting Turkey. Cooperation in the tourism industry between Moscow and Ankara may be stopped, the Russian Federal Tourism Agency said.

Moreover, Russia will restrict import of certain Turkish goods except for the goods imported for personal use to an extent permitted by law of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), the statement said.

The activities of Turkish organizations in Russia will also be restricted, according to the Kremlin’s press service.

Moreover, Russian employers will not be allowed to hire Turkish citizens starting from January 1, 2016.

French MP Proposes Sanctions Against Turkey Over ‘Siding With Extremists’

November 26, 2015 By administrator

1023993984European lawmaker Marie-Christine Arnautu, Vice President for Social Affairs of the National Front spoke to Sputnik in an exclusive interview regarding the downing of the Russian Su-24 bomber by the Turkish Air Force.

“Turkey has created a big problem by attacking the Russian aircraft, which was returning from a mission of combating the terrorists. Turkey has revealed its cards” Arnautu said in an interview.

She further said, “I just raised the question on my website and suggested not only strict sanctions against Turkey but also to stop to all negotiations regarding Turkey’s accession into the EU. It is quite clear that Turkey is sending weapons and money to the Islamists and leaves open its border, which is like a sieve for jihadists. In addition, after this unfortunate incident, which we have just seen I think that Turkey is indeed at war with those who are waging a war against terrorism.”

“This will be a good test for us… we are talking about war, we are at war… We have a pronounced enemy. Now the main question remains which country and what government is really willing to fight together in the first place against this enemy,” the lawmaker told Sputnik.

She added that fast action needs to be taken and according to her the position of French President Francois Hollande is still very blurred and uncertain.

“I think that the meeting between Putin and Hollande will be crucial. After this meeting Hollande will have to make the final choice. Will he give into the pressure of the financial groups; ultimately it all comes to a question of money and oil? Or will he dare to save France and Russia by helping the coalition that really wants to destroy Islamic fundamentalism and then will develop a real alliance with Russia and Syria,” Arnautu told Sputnik.

A bomb placed in the car of a Free Syrian Army (FSA) commander has detonated in southeastern Turkey, while the commander is being treated for heavy injuries.

An FSA commander identified as Cemil Radon was severely wounded when his car exploded at midday on Aug. 26 in Hatay province, on Turkey’s border with Syria.

The bomb detonated when the commander tried to start the car parked in front of his house in Antakya, where Radon had been residing.

Police teams and fire squads were dispatched to the area as security measures were tightened.

Meanwhile, Radon was immediately transferred to the emergency department of Antakya State Hospital via an ambulance. Reports indicated Radon’s condition remains critical.

Daily Hürriyet reported Radon had been targeted by a similar attack in Hatay’s Reyhanlı district, where a bomb placed under his car detonated.

Pro-Kurdish rallies against Erdogan hit European capitals following Turkish bombing raids

July 26, 2015 By administrator

55b4b7b1c461889e568b4584Hundreds of pro-Kurdish protesters have taken to the streets in the capitals of Europe’s three largest economies, rallying against Turkish airstrikes targeting Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) fighters in northern Iraq and Syria. Report RT

Protesters in Germany, France and the UK rallied on Saturday against the Turkish government, whose airstrikes on Kurdish Peshmerga militia positions in northern Iraq broke a truce that had lasted since 2013.

In Great Britain, a pro-Kurdish rally blocked BBC headquarters in London, during a march that started at Downing Street.  Protestors were angry with the Turkish government in a show of solidarity with the victims of the Suruc massacre.

The protesters carried banners “Turkish government funds ISIS,” “Mass action to defeat ISIS,” “Down with fascism in Turkey,” “Erdogan [Turkish PM], blood on your hands” “No to terror! No to imperialism,” and chanted “BBC, shame on you!” and “We want justice!”

Many protesters held photos bearing victims’s names in the terror act in Turkey’s Suruc last Monday. Others carried red flags of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Only a handful of police officers were present, symbolically protecting the entrance to BBC headquarters. The nature of the protest was markedly peaceful.

Hundreds of pro-Kurdish protesters rallied in the German capital on Saturday to remember the Suruc massacre victims and express support for the Turkish Kurds. The demonstrators carried portraits of Suruc victims, red and green flags of the PKK, flags of the unrecognized Kurdistan state and chanted songs in Kurdish.

The police presence during the march in Berlin was much heavier than in the British capital. German law enforcement officers were dressed in riot gear, although they carried the helmets in their hands or attached to their belts.

In London, speakers addressed the protesting crowd mostly in English, while at the Berlin rally Kurdish was mostly heard over the loudspeakers. However,  banners carried by protesters were almost all in German.

The pro-Kurdish rally in France was probably the largest, with around 2,000 protesters gathering in the streets of Paris to rally against the recent Turkish airstrikes targeting Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) fighters in northern Iraq.

Young activists in red T-shirts carried portraits of Suruc victims and chanted “Erdogan assassin.”

Last Monday, a suicide bomber, a 20-year-old Kurdish national, killed 32 youth activists in the town of Suruc. All the victims were Kurds and Islamic State claimed responsibility for the atrocity.

The terror attack caused a new eruption of violence in Turkey. The Kurds have accused the Turkish authorities of a laissez-faire approach towards Islamic State.

A series of terror acts targeting Turkish police, carried out by Kurdish activists this week, claimed the lives of two Turkish law enforcers and wounded seven.

In return, Ankara began bombing positions of the Kurdish Peshmerga militia in northern Iraq on Friday evening.

The Kurdistan Workers Party announced on its website that after the airstrikes and ground military attacks against the Peshmerga, who are fighting Islamic State on the Syrian-Turkish border, the truce with Turkey has “no meaning anymore.”
