Amb. Evans’ ‘Truth Held Hostage’ to be Presented on April 22 Armenian Genocide

Amb. Evans’ “Truth Held Hostage” will presented in Pasadena

LOS ANGELES—On Friday, April 22, USC Institute of Armenian Studies will host a book launch for TRUTH HELD HOSTAGE by Ambassador John Evans at 7pm at the Hilton Pasadena. Ambassador Evans will be present.

Ambassador Evans, a member of the Institute’s National Council, served as US ambassador to Armenia until 2005, when he lost his job for using the word Genocide to describe the Turkish government’s policy of extermination of Armenians in 1915. This book is a chronicle of John Evans’ experiences prior to and following his public statement.

The book is published by the Gomidas Institute, and Ara Sarafian, historian and president of the Gomidas Institute will also speak at the book launch.

Salpi Ghazarian, the director of the USC Institute of Armenian Studies, says, “The USC Institute of Armenian Studies is honored to not only launch this book, but create a platform for meaningful discussion about ethics as it relates to governance.”

Scholars and practitioners have welcomed the publication.

Peter Balakian, author of The Burning Tigris: The Armenian Genocide and America’s Response, said “Ambassador John Evans’s Truth Held Hostage is the most important work about the Armenian genocide by a US diplomat since Henry Morgenthau’s groundbreaking Ambassador Morgenthau’s Story in 1918. Evans writes with an elegant clarity that allows us to experience his journey into a major personal and political ethical dilemma concerning the truth of history and the untruth of US government protocol in the name of foreign policy politics. This is a must read with implications for all histories of mass violence and trauma.”

Tom de Waal, Senior Associate at Carnegie Europe and author of Black Garden: Armenia and Azerbaijan Through Peace and War, as well as The Great Catastrophe: Armenians and Turks in the Shadow of Genocide, said, “Evans is a remarkable man who was an unusual American diplomat. A principled man steeped in history, he wrestled with the moral issue of whether to defy his own government’s increasingly awkward position on the Armenian Genocide. Evans’ tale of how he came to be involved in Armenia, his term as ambassador in Yerevan and his decision to break the US government’s genocide taboo is a compelling, page-turning read. It is fascinating not just for anyone interested in Armenian issues but as an inside story of international diplomacy and politics of recent times.”

John Evans, formerly U.S. Ambassador to Armenia, enjoyed a long career in foreign service. Over the course of 35 years, Ambassador Evans served with distinction in diplomatic posts in Tehran, Prague, Moscow, Brussels (NATO), St. Petersburg and Washington, reaching the rank of Minister-Counselor. A native of Williamsburg, Virginia, educated at Yale and Columbia, he is an avid student of Russian history who devoted a sabbatical year to investigating the decline of the Ottoman Empire, the setting in which the tragic events of 1915 occurred.

Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free. Books will be available for purchase, and Ambassador Evans will be available to sign them.

Directions and parking information:

Hilton Pasadena is located on 168 S Los Robles Ave, Pasadena, CA 91101. The event will be held in the international ballroom. Valet is offered at a reduced rate of $11 and self-parking is available for $10.

Akçam’s book “The Armenian Issue is Resolved” republished in Turkey for seventh time

March 24, 2016 By administrator

akcam bookThe Turkish İletişim Publishing House has for the seventh time republished the book “The Armenian Issue is Resolved,” authored by the famous Genocide scholar, professor Taner Akçam, Akunq.net reports.

According to the source, in response to the general dissatisfaction, Young Turkish Unity and Progress Party cleared the lands of Anatolia from non-Muslim elements and “turkisized” them right in the aftermath of the Balkan wars. The WWI became one of the most important milestones of that policy.

It created a convenient climate for the exile and forced deportation of ethnic elements.  The large-scale “deportation” against Armenians in 1915 became the last phase of “turkising.”

Taner Akçam, who carried out research on the basis of the Ottoman Empire documents, draws attention to the question on what the primary sources say on this. The author presents the activities carried out upon the order of Talaat Pasha, being under his permanent control. The author also answers the question on why the Armenians were “deported” to different districts of Anatolia.

A book in Turkish which restores the truth about the Armenians with “Resistance to Aintab”

January 25, 2016 By administrator

arton121348-270x428The Belge Publishing just published in Turkey in Turkish a book about the resistance of Armenians Aintab (Turkey) a book with the title “Antepin-Varoluþ-Mücadelesi”. The book is a translation of the work of A. Cesar, translated by Murat Utchaner and Umit Kurt. It presents Arméniens- -especially related to events between 1 April 1920 and end 1921 to Aintab. The book of 198 pages addresses the Turkish readership that has the opportunity to read eyewitness accounts of survivors of the massacres and not the official and distorted version of Ankara.

Murat Utchaner one of two translators was in Armenia last year. He then told Armenian media that the book on “resistance of Aintab” different from the official version says that the Kemalists forces luted in 1922 against the “French imperialist forces”. The book proves that the troops of Kemal Atatürk did not fight against the “occupying French” but against Armenians Aintab.

Armenian-American professor reaches out to Turks with photography book

January 16, 2016, Saturday/ 17:00:00/ ARSLAN AYAN | ISTANBUL

“Dildilian Brothers: Photography and the Story of an Armenian Family in Anatolia, 1888-1923,” a book by Armen T. Marsoobian, an Armenian-American professor, has finally been translated into Turkish and is ready to enter the libraries of Turkish bookworms.

Some four years after it was published in 2011 in English, the Turkish translation of the book, produced by the initiative of the Birzamanlar Publishing House, has hit the shelves with a ceremony attended by booklovers in İstanbul on Tuesday.

“This book is just one moment in a long labor of love that I started many years ago. It first began as a private journey in the 1980s. My uncle gave me the collection of photographs, the family archive. And for many years I only shared these photos with family members at family reunions and gatherings. I realized that the family had made great efforts to document and record their lives in Ottoman Turkey. And in one way they were trying to keep the memory of the Armenian community in Anatolia alive and therefore would have been very pleased to make this public,” Marsoobian said in a speech he delivered at the celebration of the book’s launching.

“This is a journey that I am still on. It is nice to start the new year with a new book. I feel very committed to this project and this county. I will be here [Turkey] again and again,” the professor added.

Marsoobian’s book features the story of his forebears, the Dildilian family, who documented their lives in Sivas, Merzifon and Samsun and the surrounding areas of Anatolia from the second half of the 19th century, a period that was full of suffering for Armenians. In the book, from his family archives, the professor presents drawings, maps and photographs that go back as early as 1888.

238196The historic photos in the book contribute to our imagination of Armenian daily life at that time, the old and rare photographs of places, people and situations (e.g. camel caravans, college workshops, weddings, etc.) concretize a past that is long over and visually under-documented. Thanks to these photos, the reader can observe the sad and happy moments in the family’s history as well as the fear and perseverance that the survivors of 1915 harbored in the post-World War I years.

“During this journey, Ferda [Keskin, a professor of comparative literature and philosophy at İstanbul Bilgi University] and I traveled for the first time to Merzifon in 2011. Then in 2013, we launched an exhibition in İstanbul featuring the photograph archive. We took the exhibition in Merzifon in 2013 and then Diyarbakır in 2014. We were then able to bring the exhibition to Ankara in 2015. The last year was really busy year for me as we launched exhibitions in United States and Yerevan, which was also very important to me,” Marsoobian stated.

Professor Marsoobian previously came to public attention in Turkey after he opened exhibitions in various provinces in Turkey featuring a photograph archive that was collected by his extended family, who documented the social life of Anatolia during the 19th century with their cameras.

So far, he has staged exhibitions in İstanbul, Merzifon, Diyarbakır and Ankara. In an exclusive interview with Sunday’s Zaman, the professor stated that he wanted to exhibit the photos in Turkey because he wanted to show people that “a century ago, there was a rich cultural past in these lands.”

“We wanted to shed light on the forgotten history of the 19th century with these photos. If Armenians had not been forced to leave this area, Anatolia would be much [culturally] richer today,” Marsoobian said.

Sharing details about the intentions of his exhibitions and his book, Marsoobian said: “The exhibition changes a little, depending on the location. But what I would like to do is to expose Turkish citizens, whether they are of Armenian background or not, to the cultural wealth of these lands from which Armenians were removed in 1915 and where, in the years after, they were silenced and repressed.”

Profile

238135Armen T. Marsoobian is a professor of philosophy at Southern Connecticut State University and chairman of the university’s philosophy department. He defines himself as a child of Turkey, in the sense that both his parents were born in Anatolia. He is a scholar, philosopher and historian who has worked on his family’s history, which is a story of Anatolia and Ottoman history and goes back hundreds of years. In a way, he has a personal and scholarly connection to the Armenian issue, both in the past and today, because he feels that it is important for Armenians to participate in civil society in Turkey, and that is what he has been trying to promote for the past few years.

German journalist presentation of book on German responsibility in Armenian Genocide Istanbul

December 1, 2015 By administrator

201549Istanbul will host Wednesday, December 2, a presentation of the book “Genocide complicity: Germany’s role in the Armenian Genocide” by German journalist and writer Jurgen Gottschlich, Ermenihaber.am reports citing Demokrat Haber.

The author will read some excerpts from the book to answer the attendee’s questions afterwards.

The volume unveils the story of how Germany – which wanted to establish a strong presence in the East during the WWI – lured Turkey into the war. The German officers who served in the Ottoman army, characterized Armenians as spies and traitors. And when the forced deportations of Armenians turned into genocide, the German government thought it was a “harsh, but productive measure.” According to the author, Germany turned a blind eye to the diplomats and clergy members’ concerns about the atrocities perpetrated against the Armenians.

When writing the book, Gottschlich visited the sites of those events, met with descendants of Genocide survivors, simultaneously studying German and Turkish archives.
