WikiLeaks publishes an authoritative, searchable archive of 57,934 emails Erdoğan’s son-in-law Berat Albayrak,

December 5, 2016 By administrator

erdogan-son-in-lawToday, Monday 5 December 2016, WikiLeaks publishes an authoritative, searchable archive of 57,934 emails from the personal email address of Berat Albayrak, who is President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s son-in-law and Turkey’s Minister of Energy.

The emails span sixteen years from April 2000 to 23 September of this year (including the 15 July coup d’état) and are mostly correspondence between Albayrak and the ruling Turkish elite: politicians, businessmen and family members. The emails reveal the extensive influence Albayrak has over a wide range of areas of Turkish politics and life.

On 23 September, Redhack, a Turkish hacktivist group, announced they had obtained Albayrak’s emails and would release them on 26 September, unless the government released imprisoned leftists, specifically naming Aslı Erdoğan (no relation) and Alp Altınörs (assistant co-chairs of Halkların Demokratik Partisi (HDP) arrested on 16 September). When nothing was done, Redhack placed the archive on Google Drive and Dropbox. The Turkish government then censored normal internet access to Google Drive, Dropbox, Microsoft Cloud and Github, and arrested a number of alleged Redhack suspects. Reportage on this valuable archive has been previously hampered by censorship and lack of an authoritative, searchable, citable archive.

The emails detail Albayrak’s involvement in organisations such as Powertrans, the company implicated in ISIS oil imports. On 11 November 2011, the Erdoğan government passed a bill prohibiting all import, export, or transfer of oil or its by-products into or out of Turkey. But the bill also stated that the government could revoke the ban in specific cases. This exception was used to grant Powertrans the sole rights to oil transportation without holding a public tender. There have been numerous allegations in the Turkish media about Powertrans’ imports of ISIS-controlled oil to Turkey. Albayrak has repeatedly denied his connection to Powertrans, but the emails prove the opposite.

In one email, Albayrak discusses with his lawyer publicly denying any connection with Powertrans. The lawyer proposes a statement saying “my client no longer has ties with Powertrans…”. Albayrak “corrects” him, saying “what do you mean no longer? I never had ties with this company!” . However, throughout the archive it is clear that Albayrak started being involved in Powertrans in 2012, coinciding with the government’s decision to give Powertrans the rights of oil transportation. The archive contains almost 30 emails exchanged between Albayrak and Betul Yilmaz, the human resources manager of Çalık Holding, a conglomerate of which Albayrak was Chief Executive Officer. Yilmaz seeks approval from Albayrak regarding Powertrans personnel decisions, such as who to hire , and approval of Powertrans salaries .

The archive also shows attempts to control the Turkish press and social media in favour of the ruling AKP party.

In 2013, when large demonstrations against Erdoğan began, some AKP officials were concerned about the growing role of social media in the protests. A number of emails show that since the 2013 Gezi Park protests the AKP has invested in controlling social media, including hiring people to work on Twitter to influence messaging on the platform, despite blocking normal internet access to it for those within Turkey. In 2013 the Wall Street Journal also claimed that the government had formed a 6,000-strong social media team

The emails show that the AKP set up two teams to insert their own propaganda into social media platforms. The proposal for one team consists of coders, graphic designers, script writers and two experts on psychological warfare . A larger team consists of Twitter bot accounts that receive and spread pro-Erdoğan messages on social media . On 28 June 2013 the team initiated one of its first planned hashtag campaigns, “#DirenÇözüm”, using the protestors’ keyword “diren” (“resist”), while also suggesting that government wants a peaceful solution. In this email the team sends the hashtag and six possible messages for the AKP trolls to use .

According to an 11 January 2016 email, Albayrak was lobbying to keep the third most popular media group in Turkey, Ipek, either under the control of the government or to be sold to a business group close to the government, instead of being returned to its rightful owners . The Ipek Group had been seized by police in October 2015.

The email archive details the Turkish government’s crackdown on the media, and shows how serious the situation in Turkey really is.

Last year the situation deteriorated further when Turkish police commandos uploaded videos of themselves killing people and destroying homes onto social media during the Turkish government’s relaunch of armed confrontations against the Kurds. Many Turkish media outlets, already powerless to report on this brazen illegality, became particularly vulnerable just before the November 2015 elections after the break-up of the coalition of the AKP and the Gülen movement, when the government proceeded to forcefully take over Gülen-aligned media.

With this came the new strategy of seizing critical media by force and assigning control to a government-appointed “trustee”. In 2016, especially after the failed coup, police raided nearly every media holding. Özgür Gündem, which is the most widely read newspaper of the Kurdish freedom movement, was raided and shut down on 16 August. Aslı Erdoğan, who served as an advisory board member and columnist, was arrested immediately afterwards on 19 August. People who showed solidarity against the media crackdown were jailed too, including Necmiye Alpay, a renowned linguist and writer, on charges of “being a member of an armed terrorist organisation” (PKK) and “subverting the unity and integrity of the State”.

IMC TV, the most watched TV channel in northern Kurdistan, had its uplink in Istanbul turned off by the police on 4 October 2016. Dozens of TV and radio stations have been shut down in Turkey over the past few months, including a Kurdish-language cartoon channel for children, on grounds of supposed links to terrorist organisations such FETO (Gülen) or the PKK (Kurds). One of the most recent blows was against the Cumhuriyet newspaper, one of the oldest in Turkey with links to Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP), Turkey’s main opposition party, which had all its prominent writers arrested on 31 October. As a result, at present there is almost no critical media left in Turkey. Social media, which might otherwise fill the void, is heavily censored or flooded with AKP-aligned trolls and bots.

WikiLeaks has also been at the receiving end of the AKP government’s censorship push. In August this year, following the failed coup, WikiLeaks published the ruling AKP party’s email database, after which the government issued a decree the same day blocking Turks from accessing the wikileaks.org site. WikiLeaks remains banned to this day. A propaganda effort was subsequently launched to falsely claim that WikiLeaks had published the records of “millions of Turkish women”, which was then widely disseminated by western liberal press eager to distract from WikiLeaks’ exposures of Hillary Clinton.

The attack on critical media was followed by a crackdown on opposition MPs. In a midnight operation on 4 November, Turkish police arrested 11 MPs of the Kurdish political party HDP, including the party’s co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ.

The Redhack leak was briefly publicised and led to the resignation of Mehmet Ali Yalçındağ, who was one of the head executives of the biggest media conglomerate in Turkey Doğan Medya, due to the documented collaboration between him and Berat Albayrak . However, after the emails largely disappeared from the internet and the escalation of the Turkish government crackdown on the media, the emails had been effectively suppressed.

WikiLeaks’ publication of the archive today ensures the safekeeping of this historical record and the public’s proper access by making it readily searchable and citable.

WikiLeaks’ editor Julian Assange said: “The people of Turkey need a free media and a free internet. The government’s counter-coup efforts have gone well beyond their stated purpose of protecting the State from a second Gulenist coup attempt and are now primarily used to steal assets and eliminate critics. The Turkish government continues to use force to jail journalists, shut down media and restrict internet access to its citizens, depriving them of their ability to access information about their situation including by banning WikiLeaks. This consolidation around the power vertical of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan ultimately weakens Turkish institutionalism, leaving Turkey more susceptible to future coups by those in Erdoğan’s chain of command.”

‘ISIS Daesh retreats from major site in Mosul University,

December 5, 2016 By administrator

mosul-universityThe ISIS Daesh terrorist group has completely withdrawn from a major site they were using for logistical and housing purposes in the Iraqi city of Mosul after destroying all buildings there as security forces approached, a report says.

Iraq’s BasNews on Sunday quoted an informed source as saying that the Daesh terrorists withdrew from all the buildings of Mosul University, whose buildings they were using as housing centers and for manufacturing weapons, over the past two days.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the Daesh terrorists had destroyed all the buildings and internal roads on the premises with bulldozers, themselves seized from the Mosul municipality back in 2014, when they overran the city.

The “scorched earth” tactic was apparently aimed at hindering the advancement of the Iraqi forces engaged in operations to liberate the city.

The source said that the presence of the terrorists in Mosul’s residential areas had declined.

He also said that the Daesh terrorists had transferred their equipment to areas to “the right side of Mosul, west of Tigris River.”

Meanwhile, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned that the fighting in Mosul may lead to the halt of the delivery of humanitarian aid to the one million Iraqi civilians living in the areas held by Daesh in Mosul and other regions.

It also urged the Iraqi forces to set up safe corridors to allow Iraqis flee the Daesh-held areas.

The Iraqi army and volunteer forces launched an offensive to retake Mosul, the last urban area in control of Daesh in Iraq, on October 17.

The northern and western parts of Iraq have been plagued by violence ever since Daesh terrorists mounted an offensive there more than two years ago. The militants have been committing vicious crimes in the areas under their control.

Meanwhile, the director of the Department of Displacement and Migration in Anbar Province, Mohammed Rashid, has said that some 113,000 displaced families have returned to the province’s capital city, which was liberated from Daesh in January.

He told Iraq’s al-Sumaria news website that, “More than 57,000 displaced families returned to Ramadi and over 28, 000 displaced families returned to Fallujah,” the latter being another city liberated by Iraqi forces this year.

Many residents left their homes in Anbar after Daesh terrorists took control of most of the province’s cities in 2014.

New Zealand’s prime minister announces sudden resignation

December 5, 2016 By administrator

resignNew Zealand’s Prime Minister John Key says he is resigning after some eight years in office, taking the country by surprise with the abrupt announcement.

55-year-old Key cited family matters as the reason for his sudden resignation.

Speaking at a weekly media conference in Wellington on Monday, he said it had been “the hardest decision” he had ever made.

He was first elected prime minister in 2008 and has led the National Party since ten years ago.

“It’s been a decade of a lot of long, lonely nights for her,” he said in reference to his wife, adding, “And it’s the right time for me to come home… On a family basis, I don’t think I could commit much longer.”

Key, who is a wealthy former stock broker, said he would stay in the parliament so the National Party would not need to go through by-elections.

The National Party is set to hold a meeting on December 12 to choose Key’s successor. Key said he would vote for his deputy and finance minister, Bill English, to take over if his name is put forward.

English told reporters at a press conference that he had not yet decided whether to stand for leadership but did not rule it out.

He praised the prime minister’s “intelligence, optimism and integrity” and said he would be “judged by history as one of New Zealand’s greatest leaders.”

If English becomes prime minister, he would likely continue with many of Key’s core policies, analysts say.

Winston Peters, the leader of the rival New Zealand First Party, hinted that the country needed a change in policy. He said Key had consistently misled the public about the state of the economy, and his resignation showed he was “unable to muddy the waters anymore.”

European leaders call for calm as Italy’s Renzi resigns

December 5, 2016 By administrator

pm-resignFollowing a referendum defeat, Italian PM Matteo Renzi has said he will step down without delay. Italians overwhelmingly voted against the premier’s proposed constitutional reforms.

“My government ends today,” said Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi just after midnight on Monday, in a televised address from the Palazzo Chigi. “I take full responsibility for this defeat.”

Renzi said he could not refute the “extraordinarily clear” results of Sunday’s referendum on constitutional reforms, and called on his rivals to provide clear proposals for ending the continuous cycle of political deadlock in Rome. He offered his condolences to those in his “Yes” camp, congratulating them on a hard-fought campaign.

“Good luck to us all,” said the prime minister of two-and-a-half years, saying he would give his letter of resignation to President Sergio Mattarella later on Monday.

Europe calls for fast solution

Following Renzi’s referendum defeat, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said he hoped the government crisis in Italy will resolve quickly.

“We are watching the result in Italy with concern,” Steinmeier, who is visiting Greece, said in televised remarks on Monday.

“This is not of course a state crisis, but it’s a government crisis that needs to be resolved… it’s not a positive message to Europe at a difficult time,” he added.

Manfried Weber, a senior conservative European Parliament lawmaker from Germany, echoed Steinmeier’s concerns.

“Initially, a phase of instability now lies ahead of us – how will one of the biggest countries in the European Union now stabilize itself?” Weber told German public broadcaster ZDF. He added that the referendum outcome is a setback for those who want reforms in Europe.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble urged Italy to continue with Renzi’s economic reforms during a call with his Italian counterpart on Monday.

France and Luxembourg, on the other hand, viewed the result as a domestic issue that did not signify a defeat for Europe. French Finance Minister Michel Sapin said the result poses no systemic risk to the euro zone.

Likewise, Luxembourg’s foreign minister, Jean Asselborn, called the referendum a “domestic political argument,” in comments to news agency DPA. He said the issue should not be extended to the European level, but added that a drawn-out government crisis would be bad for the euro.

‘No’ constitutional change in Rome

With all votes counted, results showed 59 percent of Italians voting against Renzi’s proposed reforms, with just under 41 percent in favor, the Interior Ministry said on Monday.

Turnout for the election was high, with 65 percent of the 47 million registered voters in Italy casting ballots.

Arsinee Khanjian calls for the Diaspora to be deeper engaged with Armenian political processes

December 5, 2016 By administrator

arsinee-khanjian-diasporaArmenian-Canadian actress and producer Arsinee Khanjian has urged the Diaspora Armenians around the world to actively participate in Armenia’s political processes and make their voice heard in the country’s forthcoming elections.

“Along with number of like-minded Armenians we are undertaking an election observation mission aimed at bringing Diaspora compatriots’ participation, their engagement with political processes of Armenia during the 2017 Parliamentary Elections, to have their say in a cause of having a more democratic country based on rule of law” Khanjian told at a discussion on Monday devoted to the first steps of the “Justice Within Armenia” Initiative.

To note, the initiative, which appeared two months ago in the form of a petition on change.org is a call by prominent Armenians throughout the world for ‘the fundamental preservation and protection of human rights, direct engagement in fair and transparent elections, respect for the rule of law, democratic change through civic engagement with the citizenry of Armenia”.

Khanjyan informed, that several organized groups in the Diaspora are actively working toward the implementation of the initiative steps and are receiving membership applications throughout the Diaspora.

“They will be equipped with necessary knowledge to conduct monitoring mission within a clearly planned coordination of their activity in Armenia,” said Khanjian, adding the core group of the “Justice Within Armenia” initiative is formed abroad and comprise known intellectuals from Armenia as well with “thousands of Armenian citizens standing in solidarity’.

In the words of the Armenian-Canadian actress, it has been the high time for the Diaspora Armenians to bring their participation to the Armenian events, making use of their resources and contacts in the Diaspora. Khanjyan also expressed concern over what she described as ‘unhealthy political climate, human rights violations, poor economic indicators, lack of justice and migration’ in the homeland.

“The diaspora is much concerned with all the aforementioned,” Khanjian explained.

To remind, Arsinee Khanjian’s quick involvement into the Armenian politics came in the aftermath of the July events, when she was among the active supporters of the armed group members that violently broke into a police station in Yerevan, resulted in days long hostage standoff with three police officers killed and dozens of wounded, including some members of the armed group.

In one of the episodes Khanjian was detained by the police ‘due to public safety reasons’ in a daily gathering in front of the seized police station, that the actress attended regularly.

Hours later the police apologized to her and released.

Afterwards, Arsinee Khanjian expressed her intention to be engaged with Armenian politics in an interview with “Azatutyun” radio station.

Iran, Armenia to quadruple power exchange volume

December 5, 2016 By administrator

power-exchangeIran’s Energy Minister has announced that the capacity of electricity exchange between the Islamic Republic and Armenia will soon grow from 300 to 1200 MWs, Mehr News Agency reports.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 14th session of Iran-Armenia Joint Commission also attended by the Armenian Minister of Energy Infrastructure and Natural Resources Ashot Manukyan, Iranian Minister Hamid Chitchian said the joint session tackled implementation of the third power transmission line, North-South Transit Corridor as well as construction of a pipeline from the Persian Gulf to the Black Smea.

He pointed to the upcoming visit of Armenia’s president to Iran’s capital in the near future, asserting that “the arrival in Tehran of Serzh Sargsyan would offer the best opportunity for the development of bilateral cooperation between Iran and Armenia in energy sector and economy.”

The official, while stressing that several platforms exist for expanding and deepening bilateral relations between the two states, also said that the 14th session of Iran-Armenia Joint Commission will pave the path for further bolstering of ties in various fields like rail, aviation, agriculture, livestock, water, electricity, mining, petroleum, petrochemicals and tourism sectors.”

Chitchian also dwelled upon electricity exchange between Iran and Armenia underlining that creation of infrastructures and construction of new transmission lines will raise volume and capacity of power exchanges between the two states.

Referring to commencement of constructing the third electricity transmission pipeline between the two sides, Iran’s energy minister said implementation of the new project will bring a fourfold rise in the capacity of power exchanges between the two countries.

Also, Chitchian voiced Iran’s readiness to step up economic cooperation with Armenia reiterating that the two neighboring countries could boost economic and energy relations more than in the past.

Death toll from Oakland warehouse fire rises to 24, officials say

December 4, 2016 By administrator

oakland-fireTwenty-four bodies have been discovered in the ruins of the artist space dubbed the Oakland Ghost Ship, which burnt down on Friday night, the authorities said.

The death toll spiked from nine to 24 as the search continued overnight, Alameda County Sheriff’s Sargent Ray Kelly said on Sunday, warning that more bodies are likely to be discovered.

Investigators at the site are still trying to determine cause of the deadly fire, Kelly said, adding that arson isn’t suspected and the warehouse isn’t currently being viewed as a crime scene.

Eighty percent of the building has yet to be searched, Melinda Drayton, battalion chief at the Oakland Fire Department, said.

The search will be a “long and arduous process,” as the firefighters have been going through the debris, “bucket by bucket,” she said.

“It was quiet; it was heartbreaking,” Drayton added.

People are still reporting missing relatives and friends who were among the crowd at the ill-fated show.

The blaze broke out in a converted warehouse on 31st Ave in Oakland during a party advertised as a ‘Rave Cave,’ which was part of musician Golden Donna’s West Coast tour.

The fire raged for several hours, requiring over 50 firefighters to douse.

There have been reports that the building had no sprinkler system, and it appears that no smoke detectors went off during the blaze.
