Le Pen blasts EU, NATO, praises Trump

February 24, 2017 By administrator

(DW) French National Front leader Marine Le Pen has sharply criticised multi-lateral governance and praised the new Trump administration. She also called for a new approach towards Russia, Syria and African nations.

France’s far-right presidential front runner Marine Le Pen sounded a full-throated rejection of global trade deals and multilateral governance, defending in soaring terms Thursday the importance of cultural identity and national independence.

In a keynote foreign policy speech in Paris, Le Pen offered withering criticism of the European Union and NATO and decried what she essentially described as Western meddling in countries like Iraq, Syria, Libya, Russia and Turkey that she claimed have increased instability, broken bilateral promises and betrayed the wishes of the people.

“I don’t want to promote a French or a Western system. I don’t want to promote a universal system,” Le Pen told a packed audience of reporters, diplomats and supporters in an elegant conference hall near the Champs Elysees. “To the contrary, I want to promote a respect of cultures and peoples.”

Le Pen’s lofty discourse offered a stark counterpoint to the Front National’s more abrasive grassroots image as an anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, populist party. She described France under her governance as a champion of “oppressed people, which speaks out for the voiceless and carries something powerful and great.”

She also took no questions and continued calmly on after a bare-chested Femen protester sought to interrupt her before being carried, still shouting, out of the room.

Scandal over EU funds

A pair of polls out Thursday confirmed Le Pen remains the favored candidate in a presidential race that has been full of surprises, despite being mired in an ongoing scandal over the alleged misuse of European Union funds to pay for several Front National staff. Still, almost every survey to date shows her winning the first round of presidential elections in April, but failing to prevail in a May runoff.

For 48-year-old Le Pen, Thursday’s speech was the second chance in a week to burnish her foreign policy credentials. European leaders have snubbed her, but she had better luck earlier this week in Lebanon, where she met with the country’s president and prime minister. She also stirred controversy by cancelling a meeting with the Lebanese grand mufti after refusing to wear a headscarf.

“Going to Lebanon showed she could look presidential,” says Philippe Moreau Defarges, senior fellow at the French Institute of International Relations in Paris. Noting the country was both a former French colony and held an important Christian community – a key theme for the National Front – he added, “it allowed Mrs. Le Pen to look like both a patriot and a Christian.”

Old and new themes

Le Pen’s address touched on some familiar themes, as she railed against the European Union, NATO and free trade. But she also waded into new territory – or at least offered new nuances – as she described forging a new relationship with Africa based on “frankness, respect and mutual cooperation.”

36% of Armenia’s population indifferent to upcoming parliamentary elections – expert

February 24, 2017 By administrator

Thirty-six percent of Armenia’s population are not at all interested in the upcoming parliamentary elections, 43% have decided in favor of a particular political force, 24% have not yet made up their minds sociologist Aharon Adibekyan told reporters on Friday as he summed up preliminary survey results.

Mr Adibekyan plans to report the final results after March 20.

“As a result, the election campaign will be conducted at two levels, with the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) and the Prosperous Armenia party rivaling for a parliamentary majority. The RPA will seek to retain its positions, while the Prosperous Armenia has to persuade the rats that once fled it to come back and bring communities’ votes to it. That is, its goal is 50% of votes plus one vote,” Mr Adibekyan said.

At the second level are the political forces seeking to retain their positions – the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Dashnaktsutyun (ARF-D), Armenian National Congress (ANC) Rule of Law-turned-Armenian Renaissance, as well as other political groups that are just gaining ground.

“The alliance formed by Vartan Oskanian, Raffi Hovannisian and Seyran Ohanyan needs 7%, which is a serious figure. However, Raffi Hovannisian’s rating is 8%.”

136 Turkish diplomats seek Germany asylum

February 24, 2017 By administrator

Germany says it has received 136 asylum requests from Turks holding diplomatic passports since the July coup attempt against the Turkish president.

The figure is a total for the period August 2016 to January 2017, BBC News reports citing German media.

Turkey has urged Germany not to grant asylum to any military officers. Some posted to Nato bases in Germany are thought to be among the group.

In Greece, two more Turkish soldiers have requested asylum.

The pair – reported to be commandos – are believed to have taken part in the failed coup against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

They are in Greek police custody, having applied for asylum last week in Orestiada, a small border town near Turkey.

Last month a Greek court rejected Turkey’s request to extradite eight other Turkish soldiers who fled after the coup attempt. Turkey is appealing against that ruling.

The German interior ministry did not identify the 136 Turks who requested asylum. Not only diplomats but also their spouses and children hold diplomatic passports.

It is not clear if any of them have been granted asylum yet.

Soldiers who fled after the coup attempt fear that they will not get a fair trial in Turkey.

The Turkish authorities have dismissed at least 100,000 public servants, including teachers, police and members of the judiciary.

Tens of thousands of suspects are in detention. The crackdown is targeting suspected supporters of Fethullah Gulen, a cleric who lives in self-imposed exile in the US.

Iraqi forces liberate Mosul airport from Daesh: Media reports

February 23, 2017 By administrator

Government troops and local fighters took control of the city’s airport as they fought to push “Islamic State” out of their last stronghold in the city. Losing Mosul could spell the end of IS’ power in the country.

The Iraqi military said on Thursday that special forces were closing in on “Islamic State” (IS) terrorists in the city of Mosul. State television reported that government soldiers had stormed the airport and a military complex in the western half of the city. Later, the army confirmed that it had taken control of the airport.

“The Rapid Response Forces and federal police are fully in control of the airport of Mosul,” state television proclaimed. The news came after hours of fierce firefights between coalition forces and the extremists.

“Our forces started a major operation early this morning to storm the airport of Mosul and the Ghazlani base to dislodge Daesh (IS) terrorists. We can confirm that the Mosul airport militarily has fallen and it’s a matter of short time to fully control it,” said Sabah al-Numan, a spokesman for the counter-terrorism service.

Some officials later told the Associated Press that some soldiers from the US-led coalition were amongst the advancing troops, but did not say which country they came from. On Lebanese television, live footage from the perimeter of the airport showed a military helicopter firing on IS targets amid blasts of gunfire.

At Ghazlani, heavy clashes continued into Thursday afternoon. But according to Brigadier General Yahya Rasool, Iraqi forces had been able to enter the base and hoped to take it soon.

The end of the “caliphate”?

Since successfully ousting the extremist fighters from eastern Mosul last month, the Iraqi army has sought to control the airport as a base for finally pushing IS out of the country’s second-largest city.

IS overran Mosul in June 2014, when a lack of troops and infighting among military personnel led to the abandonment of the city. Under IS occupation, the city has experienced a number of atrocities including ethnic cleansing of Christians, human trafficking mostly of young women, and the destruction of ancient heritage sites such as the tomb of the Old Testament prophet Jonah.

A 100,000 strong coalition of government troops, Kurdish fighters and local militias, backed by the US airstrikes, has made rapid

advances in retaking the city since January. If IS loses its territory in Mosul, that may well herald the end of the terrorists’ self-styled caliphate which at its peak straddled large parts of Iraq and Syria.

Taking the western half of the city is likely to pose more of a challenge, however, as its roads are narrower and older than in the east – soldiers will likely be forced to abandon their armored vehicles and fight in the streets.

Criminalizing visits to Artsakh is a threat to Russia’s national security and territorial integrity – Denis Dvornikov

February 23, 2017 By administrator

“This is a hysteria,” during today’s press conference in Yerevan Russian publicist, member of the Russian Association of the International Law Denis Dvornikov said the above mentioned in response to a reporter’s question over his assessment on the Azerbaijani acts of launching a criminal case against MEPs Frank Engel (Luxembourg), Eleni Teoharus (Cyprus) and Jaromír Štětina (Czech Republic) and submitting request to Interpol to issue international arrest warrant against them.

“The referendum on Constitutional amendments held in Nagorno Karabakh has greatly irritated the neighbouring country. However, I am convinced that Interpol will reject such an application, as it will become a dangerous precedent in all over the world. In addition to that, Interpol officials have respect towards their spare time and work, as when one precedent is formed, they will receive similar requests regarding all the disputed territories of the world. This is a political issue,” Denis Dvornikov said.

He noted that such an act by Azerbaijan is more directed to its own population to show them the authorities can somehow affect the Nagorno Karabakh referendum.

Denis Dvornikov recalled the statement of Russia’s Foreign Minster Sergey Lavrov stating that it is unacceptable to ban someone from visiting a place.

“He made it clear that visits to Artsakh are not forbidden,” the Russian publicist said adding that eventually Azerbaijani actions will also pall the international organizations, as they have palled Lavrov.

Criminalizing visits to Artsakh is a threat to Russia’s national security and territorial integrity. This is a very important matter,” he underscored referring to the disputes of Crimea and Kuril Islands.
