International Forum of Bloggers concludes its work in Artsakh, calls for adherence to the right to the freedom of expression

March 22, 2017 By administrator

The international forum of bloggers organized by “Artsakhakertum” non-governmental organization along with Artsakh Journalists Union concluded its work in Stepanakert, Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh) Republic.

Around 30 bloggers from 11 states attended the two-day event. In the scope of the forum, the international guests made presentations and held discussions on the main topic of the event which was coverage of the conflict on social media and the mechanism to guarantee the freedom of journalists and bloggers.

The guests – famous bloggers Anton Nosik (Russia), Anton Merkurov (Russia), Alexander Alimov (Latvia), Gilad Halpern (Israel) among them –  toured the Artsakh frontline, visited number of border settlements.

On the final day of the forum, the bloggers adopted a statement, which reads as follows:

We, the participants of the International forum of bloggers taking place in Artsakh,

Highlighting the importance of exercising and protecting fundamental human rights the freedom of expression and the freedom of movement;

Emphasizing the common responsibility of the international community on the matter;

Taking into account the irreplaceable role of media representatives in providing objective information;

Expressing full support to the people of the Republic of Artsakh,

Express confidence that steps of any authority aimed at limiting the exercise by the media representatives of their right to the freedom of expression and the freedom of movement,
as well as the policy of persecution over the exercise of those rights are the gross violation of the fundamental human rights and freedoms;

Condemn all the violations and limitations of the freedom of expression and freedom of movement,

State that this international forum, taking place in the self-determined Republic of Artsakh, is the best response to the steps aimed at limiting and prosecuting for freedom of expression and freedom of movement;

Assure that each of us is determined to contribute to the implementation of fundamental human rights, as well as to advocating for peace.

To remind, the organization of the forum came a month after the extradition of Russian-Israeli blogger Alexander Lapshin from Belarus to Azerbaijan. Lapshin was wanted by Azerbaijan after visiting the Nagorno Karabakh Republic (NKR) and criticizing the Azerbaijani leadership.

Azerbaijani prosecutors launched a criminal case into “repeated public anti-state calls” and “illegal crossing of Azerbaijan’s state border,” punishable with a prison term of five to eight years.

The extradition and persecution against Lapshin was widely slammed as a gross violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of speech and movement.

Video Can Dündar: Turkey is “the biggest prison for journalists in the world”

July 8, 2016 By administrator

By Ryan McChrystal,

Turkish journalist, author and filmmaker Can Dündar spoke at the House of Commons last week about the state of politics and media freedom in Turkey. The event was hosted by the Centre for Turkey Studies and chaired by Scottish Liberal Democrat peer Lord Jeremy Purvis of Tweed.

“I’ve come from the biggest prison for journalists in the world,” Dündar told the audience. “There are close to 40 journalists imprisoned in Turkey — we are competing with China.”

Dündar, the editor-in-chief of Cumhuriyet, was sentenced to five years and 10 months in prison on 6 May 2016, just hours after a failed attempt on his life by a gunman. Along with Cumhuriyet journalist Erdem Gül, he was convicted of “leaking secret state information” for the paper’s reports claiming that Turkey was sending weapons to Islamists in Syria.

The pair were arrested and detained in November 2015, just days before a meeting of the EU heads of state with Turkey, the first meeting of its kind in almost six decades. “Turkey was not on the agenda because it was a democratic country, but because of the need for Turkey regarding the migrant issue,” Dündar explained.

Although he has been out of prison since February 2016, when he returns to Turkey — which he defiantly said he will — he risks serving his sentence.

Watching from his TV in solitary confinement during his stint in prison, Dündar learned of the deal that Turkey would keep asylum seekers from crossing into Europe, and in return the country would receive €3bn and visa exemptions.

Asylum seekers were “held hostage” by Turkey, Dündar said. “I was waiting until the end of the conference hoping there would be some mention of the free press, but there was nothing.”

He has been a journalist for 35 years, working in television and in print. “Throughout all these years working in the media, it has never been a paradise, but I don’t think it’s ever been quite as hellish as it is at the moment,” Dündar added. “We face oppression and censorship.”

The EU was due to release a report on Turkey’s lack of press freedom just weeks before the summit and in time for the Turkish general election. Dündar told the audience that following a meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and EU officials, the report was delayed until after the general election.

Erdoğan’s Justice and Development Party achieved electoral victory and a week later, the report was published. “The human rights record of Turkey was condemned in strong terms,” Dündar said.

“For those of us who grew up in Turkey, in view of the Western, democratic ideals, this was very disappointing,” Dündar told the audience. “Europe is a great ideal, something to aim for.”

Dündar has lived through three military coups in Turkey. “Back then there was serious censorship,” he said. “But Erdoğan has succeeded in doing something the military couldn’t: he has instructed the media moguls close to him to buy up newspapers and TV stations, establishing a coup of friendly media.”

Dündar explains that these Erdoğan-friendly groups — mainly rich civil engineering companies receiving favours from the president — control 60% of the media, while opposition media make up only about 5-10% of the market.

Critics of Erdogan face further financial difficulty in the form of harsh fines for “insulting” Erdogan — of which there have been over 3,000 cases. “The president takes any criticism as an insult,” Dündar explained, joking: “He is the most insulted president in the world.”

Critical media outlets also find it difficult to generate revenue through advertising because “any company advertising with us will also face sanction”. The media faces further pressures in the form of “severe tax bills” and the intimidation of journalists to “toe the line”.

When journalists like Dündar aren’t visiting colleagues in prison and attending court cases in support of friends, they are preparing for their own hearings. And while they often win international awards for their work, “we can’t eat those so we have to create resources”.

Although the situation in Turkey looks unpromising, Dündar told the audience to remember that “there is another Turkey that believes in democracy and secularism”. There exists a “great existential struggle” and the aim for those like him “is to overcome this fear, but we have to be brave and we have to unite”.

In this struggle, Dündar asked the people of Europe for “support and solidarity” before Turkey “becomes a fascist regime”. He called on the Western media to do more to draw attention to the crimes of Erdoğan.

Pope Francis Urges World To Never Forget Armenian Genocide

In a visit to Armenia, Pope Francis has urged the world to never forget the Ottoman-era slaughter of some 1.5 million Armenians which he termed a genocide – a characterization likely to cause tensions with Turkey.

The Pope called it “genocide” publicly for the first time last year – which sparked a furious reaction from Turkey. As Weekend Edition Saturday reported, Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan told him not to do it again and recalled its ambassador from the Vatican for 10 months.

NPR’s Sylvia Poggioli, reporting from Armenia, explained that the Pope ad-libbed the politically-charged term into prepared remarks at the presidential palace Friday evening:

“At a Vatican briefing, the spokesman – Father Federico Lombardi – used the Armenian term … which means ‘the great evil.’ And he bristled when asked why he didn’t say genocide. So when the prepared text of the pope’s speech last night used only the Armenian term, most of us thought that was a possible diplomatic overture towards Turkey.

“But in his actual delivery, the pope added the word genocide. He said: That genocide, made possible by the twisted racial, ideological, or religious aims that darken the minds of the tormentors, even to the point of planning the annihilation of entire peoples.”

The pope’s comments drew a standing ovation from Armenia’s president, she added. Francis has long been a vocal supporter of the Armenian cause, which dates back to his close relationship with the Armenian diaspora community in his native Argentina, as Sylvia has reported.

Lombardi said the Vatican “wasn’t aiming to renew conflict with Turkey by repeating the term, stressing that the pope has always called for reconciliation,” according to The Associated Press.

Turkey did not immediately respond to the characterization. Even though “historians widely agree that 1.5 million Armenians were killed,” Sylvia explained, the country “vehemently rejects the accusation of genocide, claiming the number of dead was smaller and that they were victims of civil strife.”

On Saturday, Francis visited the Armenian genocide memorial in Yerevan. Sylvia said Francis prayed and then wrote this in the memorial guest book:

“Here I pray with pain in my heart, so that never again will there be tragedies like this. …May God protect the memory of the Armenian people. Memory should never be watered down or forgotten. Memory is the source of peace and the future.”

Armenians, who are primarily Orthodox with a Catholic minority, responded positively to the pope’s visit. They seemed “genuinely honored to welcome the pope,” as the AP reported.

“We have the memory of the genocide in our genes,” 45-year-old Alexander Rubenyan told the wire service. “It used to be a gene of sadness, but with every visit of people like the pope the Armenian gene is becoming more alive and full of optimism.”

Armenia is 25th in world’s safest countries’ list

April 18, 2016 By administrator

default-saftyArmenia is 25th, from among 117 countries, in terms of it being a safe country.

The Crime Index For Country 2016 report has been issued by Numbeo, the world’s major database of user contributed data about cities and countries worldwide, according to its website.

According to this report, Armenia’s crime index and safety index are 31.11 percent and 68.89 percent, respectively.

The leader in the South Caucasus countries however is Georgia, which is ranked 6th, and where the safety index is 77.84 percent. Azerbaijan, on the other hand, is 31st, and where the safety index is 67.61 percent.

Armenia’s other neighbors, Turkey and Iran, are ranked 47th and 82nd, correspondingly.

As per Numbeo, Crime Index is an estimation of overall level of crime in a given city or a country, whereas the Safety index is, on the other way, quite opposite of crime index. If the city has a high safety index, it is considered very safe

World marks first International Day of Remembrance of Genocide Victims

December 9, 2015 By administrator

202037The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon issued a statement on the first-ever International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime on Wednesday, December 9.

The occasion also coincides with the anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in 1948.

“This is an ideal time to reaffirm our commitment to prevent this serious international crime, honor the memory of the victims, and reaffirm the right to remedies and reparation, as recognized in international law,” Ban said in his speech.

Preventing genocide, according to him, means paying more attention to the warning signs, and being prepared to take immediate action to address them.

“After all, genocide does not just happen; it unfolds over time. It is not part of the accidental “fallout” of conflict; most often, it is systematic, planned, with precise targets,” he noted.

The Secretary General is confident that prevention of genocide is a specific obligation under international law. “On this new international observance, let us recognize the need to work together more concertedly to protect individuals from gross human rights violations and uphold our common humanity,” Ban concluded his message.
