Karen Karapetyan, the son of Armenian billionaire Samvel Karapetyan, tied the knot this weekend with his social media star bride, Lilit, in Moscow.

The couple, refusing to do anything simply, completely redecorated two entire venues—both the Armenian Apostolic Church and the Safisa banquet hall—adding up to eight lavish rooms, dripping in crystals and fresh flowers, which you can see here:

Traditional Armenian wedding ceremony staged at “Zvartnots” museum-reserve, turned to grandiose festive event

The agency for preservation of cultural heritage and the historic environment reported, the event organized at the initiative of “Teryan” Cultural foundation was aimed at reviving the forgotten traditions of the Armenian traditional wedding.

The wedding ceremony held at the Zvartnots” historical-cultural museum-reserve was choreographed by RA People’s Artist Armen Manukyan and attended not only by locals but also number of tourists wishing to get familiarized with Armenian cultural values.

According to the source, young artists Smbat Kocharyan and Anna Harutyunyan participated in a role-playing event as a groom and a bride as they themselves plan to get married and use the forgotten traditions during their wedding ceremony.

Meanwhile, demographer Gayane Shegoyan, speaking at the event, told about her published a book on traditional Armenian wedding rituals, collecting all the traditions of the Western and Eastern Armenia.

A traditional Armenian wedding is set to be staged at the territory of Zvartnots Historical-Cultural Museum-Reserve of Armenia on 10 August.

The unique event organized by Service for the Protection of Historical Environment and Cultural Museum Reservations SNCO in cooperation with Teryan Cultural Center is a staging of a traditional Armenian wedding ceremony, with all its customs.

As the Service for the Protection told Panorama.am, the bride and groom wearing traditional Armenian costumes, the bridesmaid and the godfather will present the elements of a traditional Armenian wedding, which are forgotten at some extent.

The area of Zvartnots reserve-museum is planned to be decorated with Armenian motifs – carpets, jars, accompanied with Armenian folk music (zurna and dhol).

“Karin” (artistic director Gagik Ginosyan) and “Vostan” (artistic director G. Abelyan-Badalyan) folk song and dance ensembles, as well as “Masunk” Folk Song and Dance Group named after Rudik Haroyan will also perform during the ceremony.

The wedding ceremony is staged by Honored Worker of Culture Armen Manukyan.

Turkey: Kurd in Gaziantep mourners slam Turkish govt. for failure to protect citizens

A funeral procession for victims of a bomb attack in Turkey’s Gaziantep has turned into an anti-government demonstration, with participants slamming Turkish government for failure to protect security of citizens.

Hundreds of angry mourners chanting “Murderer Erdogan” gathered for the funeral of 12 of the victims of the bombing that killed over 50 people in a wedding ceremony in Gaziantep late on Saturday.

The terrorist attack was carried out when the assailant detonated explosives among the crowd. The huge explosion also inflicted injuries to more than 90 people, including the bride and groom.

“The explosion was the result of a … bomber aged between 12 and 14 who either detonated (the bomb) or others detonated it,” President Erdogan said at a press conference in Istanbul on Sunday, adding that 69 of the wounded remained in hospital.

Bombings increased especially after July 2015, when Ankara launched a campaign against militants of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the southeastern border areas. The Turkish military has also been conducting offensives against the positions of the group in northern Iraq.

A Turkish official confirmed an explosion had taken place in Gaziantep but would not say how many casualties there were.

“The explosion took place during a wedding. According to initially available information, the ceremony was being held outdoors,” the official said.

NATO member Turkey has suffered a string of attacks by IS and by Kurdish militants seeking autonomy or independence.

Last month, the country was shaken by an attempted coup by rogue elements of the military.

Thousands have since been arrested or sacked in the military, police, civil service, judiciary and academia in a crackdown on what President Tayyip Erdogan calls a vast terrorist conspiracy.

In July, three suspected IS suicide bombers killed 44 people at Istanbul’s main airport – the deadliest in a string of attacks in Turkey this year.

Almost 40 people were killed in a suicide bomb attack in Ankara in March that was claimed by a Kurdish group.

Thousands of mainly young Armenians remain on the streets of Yerevan surrounding the presidential palace, and smaller demonstrations have spread to the towns of Gyumri, Vanadzor, Kapan and Sisian.

The #ElectricYerevan protests have become “a multi-headed dragon” for President Serzh Sargsyan’s administration, said independent analyst Saro Saroian. “After decapitating one head, another one grows immediately in its place.”

That is essentially what happened on 27 June when some protesters accepted Sargsyan’s offer to subsidise the hugely unpopular tariff rise that sparked the protests – and a far larger group elected to stay on the streets.

Addressing the crowd as “my dears”, Sargsyan, a veteran politician who has faced down more than a few rebellions in his seven years in office, urged the group to listen to his “friendly appeals” for a solution. He said that having police disperse protesters from downtown Yerevan “is not our aim”.

Hundreds of citizens have been arrested in the protests so far and journalists have had their equipment smashed. The use of water cannon on unarmed civilians led to condemnation from human rights groups .

The president’s overture essentially split the protest between a few hundred who agreed with the government’s proposal and left Baghramian Avenue for nearby Liberty Square, and many more who stayed put.
Meanwhile, the protests have been taking an increasingly jubilant tone, with three couples choosing the streets of Yerevan as their wedding venue.

“This is the result of a civilian struggle over the past two to three years, when thousands of people were mobilised. Not a crowd, but an organised fight, and a national fight, when the citizens know their rights,” said Saroian.

One demonstrator, 32-year-old psychologist Anush Badalian, said that experiences after the fall of the Soviet Union, when the economy and energy sector collapsed and Armenia fought a brutal, six-year war with Azerbaijan over the still-disputed territory Nagorno-Karabakh, fuelled protesters’ refusal to back down.

Stepan Danielian, head of the Collaboration for Democracy Center, warned that the protests may rnf in disappointment.

While even more Armenians on the streets could prove decisive, “public structures and mechanisms to make decisions must be developed,” he said.

“Even if Serzh Sargsyan resigns and the [ruling] Republican Party is dissolved, by that alone, problems are not solved. New Serzh Sargsyans will be born. The problem is more radical [than that].”
At the heart of the protests is the government’s perceived tradition of looking out for its business buddies: in this case Electric Networks of Armenia, owned by the Russian company Inter RAO, which has close ties to the Kremlin.

Demonstrators are furious over reports such as Transparency International Armenia’s, which claimed that the company spent 450 million-drams (about £600,000) on luxury cars.

To address that anger, the government has suggested that civil society and the opposition help appoint auditors and has not excluded the possibility of selling or nationalising the utility company.

But some analysts believe these proposals do not go far enough to address the underlying resentment.

“The post-Soviet system in Armenia, which by itself represents the Russian-style system of vertical corruption, does not work anymore,” said Mehrabian, a political analyst at the Armenian Center for National and International Studies. “It has expired, [yet] it is impossible to exchange its existence [for something else].”
