U.S. Embassy brings U.S. & Armenian companies together to make mining sustainable

November 16, 2016 By administrator

armenia-us-miningOn November 16, the U.S. Embassy in Yerevan, in partnership with the Ministry of Economic Development and Investments, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, and HSBC Bank, organized a one-day sustainable mining business conference. The goal was to connect Armenian mine operators with well-known U.S. companies that offer products and services that ensure greater mine productivity, employee safety, and nature protection.  Representatives from seven leading U.S. companies and 35 Armenian mining companies attended the event.

The conference was designed to strengthen the growing commercial ties between the United States and Armenia by introducing leading American businesses to Armenian mining sector operators, and by giving the American companies the opportunity to showcase the latest technological advances in the field.

“Mining, done responsibly and transparently in line with the highest international environmental and social standards, can be a successful investment and be of benefit to the Armenian people,” said Ambassador Richard M. Mills, Jr. in his opening remarks. “Sustainable mining, using the latest technology and equipment, can be safe for mining workers and can protect Armenia’s environment.”

The day-long event helped the U.S. companies gain a greater understanding of the objectives and priorities of Armenia’s government leaders and businesses, as well as the perspectives of multilateral financing institutions and other key business actors.

“Today we’re focusing on the mining sector, because as you know, it is one of the leading sectors in the Armenian economy and a major contributor to the GDP and the country’s exports. Mining represents real opportunities for Armenia,” said Ambassador Mills. “And these opportunities are not just ideas on paper; there are successful mining enterprises that are already in operation and looking to expand. We want to see them grow, and at the same time preserve the country’s natural beauty, invest in the communities where they operate, and protect their workforce.”

Seven U.S. corporations – Modular Mining Systems, General Electric, Caterpillar/Zeppelin, IBM, Honeywell, Terra Source Global and Dow – sent representatives to Yerevan to present their products and services and to learn about business opportunities in Armenia. The one-day program also featured presentations by EBRD Armenia, HSBC Bank, Lydian International, and Armenian government officials.

US warns extremists ‘may attack, kidnap or blow up’ Americans in Istanbul

October 23, 2016 By administrator

us-waren-istanbul-terrorThe US consul-general in Turkey has called on US citizens in Istanbul to steer clear of crowded public places and locations popular with tourists due to an imminent threat of attacks on US and other foreign nationals by extremist groups.

The security memo was published on the official consulate page on Saturday. While elaborating on the nature of the possible attacks that Americans can fall prey to, it listed “armed attack, attempted kidnapping, bombing, or other violent acts,” adding that they could be “pre-planned” and come “with little or no warning.”

For the sake of their safety, the consulate urged US citizens to reconsider their traveling plans, especially, if they are going to visit “locations where the westerners are known to frequent or reside.” Of particular concern are the major cities located in southeastern Turkey, in the border region with Syria.

Americans have been also cautioned to shun political gatherings and rallies as well as to avoid visiting places that attract large crowds and staying vigilant while visiting tourist spots.

Meanwhile, one policeman was killed and 16 people, including six officers, were injured in a car bomb blast in the eastern Turkish city of Bingöl, Turkish state news agency Anadolu reported Saturday.

A car bomb went off as an armored police vehicle passed. While no one has claimed responsibility, Turkish police said the armed wing of the banned Kurdistan’s Workers Party (PKK), which is considered a terrorist organization in Turkey, could be behind the assault. An operation to arrest the perpetrators is under way.

Turkey has been experiencing a wave of terrorist attacks attributed either to the PKK or to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL). On October 9, 18 people, including 10 policemen, were killed and 27 people injured in a car bomb explosion in the southeast Turkish town of Semdinli, located in an area that sees occasional heavy fighting between the Turkish army and Kurdish militias.

The deadliest terrorist attack this year took place at Istanbul’s Ataturk airport in June, killing 43 people and injuring 239. It was blamed by the Turkish authorities on Islamic State.

Better to support Congress members than vote for U.S. President: publisher

October 11, 2016 By administrator

harut-sassounian-740-newPublisher of The California Courier Harut Sassounian has unveiled a new article, urging Armenian-Americans to vote for members of Congress rather than the U.S. presidential candidates. The article reads:

There is widespread dissatisfaction and mistrust among the American public toward the two main presidential candidates: Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Armenian-Americans likewise are negatively disposed toward these candidates. More specifically, on Armenian issues Mrs. Clinton has shown that she cannot be trusted, while Donald Trump’s position is unknown.

Strangely, neither Clinton nor Trump has made any effort to win over Armenian-American voters, despite the close presidential race. The two candidates have not attended any Armenian events, held no meetings with members of the community, nor sought to raise any funds from them. It is preferable that presidential candidates make no promises that they do not intend to keep, thereby deterring Armenian-Americans from wasting their money and votes, and after the election, saving them from much aggravation and disappointment.

Of course, everyone is free to vote for the candidate of his or her choice. One is also free to vote for third party candidates or not to vote at all.

While Presidential candidates are constantly covered by the media, there are many local and state elections that hardly make the news. For example, there are 435 Members of Congress and a third of the 100 U.S. Senators who are up for election or reelection on November 8.

As opposed to White House candidates who may or may not support Armenian issues after the election, most House and Senate members have already served in Congress for several years and therefore, their positions on Armenian issues are well-known. Thus, voting for them is not a guessing game! They have a proven track record — positive, negative or in between.

Below is the list of only those House and Senate members who have received either an excellent (A) or extremely bad (F) grade from the Armenian National Committee of America after a thorough review of their positions on a broad range of Armenian-American issues in the last two years. Those who have earned the grade A deserve the Armenian community’s support. Those who have an F after their names have had a very negative position on Armenian causes, and therefore, should not be supported. The letters D and R denote Democrat or Republican. To review the complete list of all members of Congress and their grades, please visit: www.anca.org/report-card.

Breaking News: ‘S-300, S-400 air defenses in place’: Russian MoD warns US-led coalition not to strike Syrian army

October 6, 2016 By administrator

syria-russia-usRussia’s Defense Ministry has cautioned the US-led coalition of carrying out airstrikes on Syrian army positions, adding in Syria there are numerous S-300 and S-400 air defense systems up and running.

Russia currently has S-400 and S-300 air-defense systems deployed to protect its troops stationed at the Tartus naval supply base and the Khmeimim airbase. The radius of the weapons reach may be “a surprise” to all unidentified flying objects, Russian Defense Ministry spokesperson General Igor Konashenkov said.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, any airstrike or missile hitting targets in territory controlled by the Syrian government would put Russian personnel in danger.

The defense official said that members of the Russian Reconciliation Center in Syria are working “on the ground” delivering aid and communicating with a large number of communities in Syria.

“Therefore, any missile or air strikes on the territory controlled by the Syrian government will create a clear threat to Russian servicemen.”

“Russian air defense system crews are unlikely to have time to determine in a ‘straight line’ the exact flight paths of missiles and then who the warheads belong to. And all the illusions of amateurs about the existence of ‘invisible’ jets will face a disappointing reality,”  Konashenkov added.

He also noted that Syria itself has S-200 as well as BUK systems, and their technical capabilities have been updated over the past year.

The Russian Defense Ministry’s statement came in response to what it called “leaks” in the Western media alleging that Washington is considering launching airstrikes against Syrian government forces.

“Of particular concern is information that the initiators of such provocations are representatives of the CIA and the Pentagon, who in September reported to the [US] President on the alleged controllability of ‘opposition’ fighters, but today are lobbying for ‘kinetic’ scenarios in Syria,” he said.

He cautioned Washington to conduct a “thorough calculation of the possible consequences of such plans.”

US-led coalition jets bombed positions of the Syrian government forces on September 17, resulting in the deaths of 83 servicemen. Washington said the airstrike was a mistake, however Damascus claimed the incident was a “blatant aggression.”

The relocation of the S-300 system in order to protect Russian ships and the naval base in Syria was confirmed by Russian defense officials on October 4. Konashenkov assured that the S-300 is a “purely defensive system and poses no threat.” Russia also has S-400 missile defense systems at Khmeimim base that were placed there after Turkey downed a Russian SU-24 jet in November of 2015.

Armenia safer than U.S., Germany, France: Global report

October 6, 2016 By administrator

armenia-safer-usArmenia is safer than the United States, Germany and Italy, the World Economic Forum said in its Global Competitiveness Report, published recently.

Overall, Armenia is ranked 79th out of 138 countries included in the WEF’s report, which assesses the competitiveness landscape of the economies, providing an insight into the drivers of their productivity and prosperity.

Scoring 5.2 points out of possible 7, Armenia took the 47th spot in the rankings, alongside Chile, Nicaragua, Jordan, Lithuania and Mongolia.

In the report, Azerbaijan is placed the 41st, Georgia, Turkey and Iran come in 28th, 87th and 90th, respectively, while Russia is ranked the 95th.

Interestingly, some developed countries are considered less safe than the South Caucasus states, including Greece (52th spot), Germany (58th), the United States (60th), France (62nd) and Italy (96th).

The security index of the Global Competitiveness Report is based on four indicators:

– Business costs of terrorism which assesses to what extent the threat of terrorism imposes costs on businesses in a given country (Armenia claims the 33rd position with a score of 5.8);

– Business costs of crime and violence which assesses to what extent the incidence of crime and violence imposes costs on businesses (Armenia is the 27th with 5.4 points);

– Organized crime which asses to what extent organized crime (mafia-oriented racketeering, extortion) imposes costs on businesses (Armenia is the 57th with 5.1 points);

– Reliability of police services which assesses to what extent police services can be relied upon to enforce law and order (Armenia is the 67th with 4.4 points).

Armenian Embassy Celebration on Capital Hill Draws Congressional Friends and Community Leaders

Armenian Embassy Celebration on Capital Hill Draws Congressional Friends and Community Leaders

Armenian Embassy Celebration on Capital Hill Draws Congressional Friends and Community Leaders

WASHINGTON—House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA), Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ), and the bipartisan leadership of the Congressional Armenian Caucus joined Armenian American leaders in toasting Armenia’s 25th anniversary of independence, at a Capitol Hill celebration hosted by the Embassy of Armenia, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).

The program featured warm toasts by legislators, congratulating Armenia on a quarter century of independence and pledging continued partnership in further developing the U.S.-Armenia relationship, supporting Artsakh’s freedom, and ending U.S. complicity in Ankara’s denial of the Armenian Genocide. Ambassador Grigor Hovhanissian hosted the Congressional program, offering his own inspirational words regarding the U.S.-Armenia partnership, and inviting each legislator to offer their toast to mark this historic occasion.

In his remarks, ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian noted that, “when the Armenians look back up on the early years of their homeland’s reborn independence, they will surely remember and fondly recall the help of their American friends.” He went on to share the many ways in which America has assisted Armenia – from post-earthquake humanitarian aid to technical economic assistance and an aid-to trade transition that has brought unprecedented levels of U.S. investment to Armenia.

Hamparian emphasized the Armenian people’s commitment to regional peace, highlighting the commitment of both Yerevan and Stepanakert to the OSCE peace process for Nagorno Karabakh and the Royce-Engel proposals to strengthen the cease-fire. He closed by emphasizing Armenia’s reciprocation of American generosity, noting the high level of Armenian participation in peacekeeping operations – from Iraq and Afghanistan to Kosovo and Lebanon, Armenia’s partnership with the United States on nuclear safety challenges, and Armenia’s leadership in addressing the Syria crisis by serving as a safe haven for at risk minorities.

Members of Congress joining Chairman Royce and Senator Menendez in toasting Armenia’s 25th anniversary were Congressional Armenian Caucus Co-Chairs Frank Pallone (D-NJ) and Jackie Speier (D-CA), Vice-Chairs Adam Schiff (D-CA) and David Trott (R-MI), Judy Chu (D-CA), Jim Costa (D-CA), Anna Eshoo (D-CA, and Brad Sherman (D-CA).

Hacker Guccifer 2.0 Exposes Democrats’ Pay-to-Play Scheme “Ambassadorships for sale”

September 14, 2016 By administrator

pay-playAfter revealing that the Democratic National Committee actively conspired against presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, the hacker known as Guccifer 2.0 has now exposed the organization’s corrupt method of appointing vital US government positions.

On Tuesday, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) released a statement, bracing for new revelations by — who else?— the Russians. “The DNC is the victim of a crime – an illegal cyber attack by Russian state-sponsored agents who seek to harm the Democratic Party and progressive groups in an effort to influence the presidential election,” the statement reads. “We would urge anyone attempting to access these documents to proceed with extreme caution given the potential malware risks.”

The DNC is bracing itself for the release of more documents pic.twitter.com/y1uVz8jUW9

— WikiLeaks (@wikileaks) September 13, 2016

Now that the documents have been released, the attempt to blame the “Russian boogeyman” for the hack has been revealed as a clear attempt to create a distraction from the damning information contained within the leaked documents.

According to the documents, top donors to the DNC have received various government positions. Most are ambassadorships, but several are departmental appointments.

Matthew Berzun, who reportedly raised $1,907,100 for the DNC, as well as $1,174,430 for President Barack Obama’s Organizing for Action (OFA), was appointed as Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Kirk Wagar appears to have raised $825,000 for the DNC and $1,300,000 for the OFA before being appointed Ambassador to Singapore. The documents show that Julius Genachowski raised $792,650 for the DNC and $2,628,169 for the OFA. Genachowski served as the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chair between 2009 and 2013. Frank Sanchez raised $3,415,000 for the DNC, OFA, and the Combined Federal Campaign and served as the US Under Secretary of Commerce.

“We have a political system which, unfortunately, encourages pay to play, and people who give big donations are often rewarded with positions in the government,” former Congressman Dennis Kucinich told Radio Sputnik’s By Any Means Necessary. “It really illustrates the defects in our system, where money trumps everything and everything’s for sale.”

“And don’t think for a moment that all of these corporate interests that are honeycombed now into positions in the government aren’t delivering to the corporate interests, from where they came, some form of benefit, in terms of reshaping government policy,” he adds.

As long as we have the kind of campaign finance system we have, the system is going to be vulnerable to pay to play, and that’s what we’re seeing right now, and it happens in both political parties, so it’s a rotten system.” Kucinich pointed out that the problem isn’t limited to the Democratic Party. “Both political parties are in trouble. There is an emerging force in America that doesn’t rely on political parties for legitimacy, and the political parties — both Democrat and Republican — have become totally self-serving, captives of corporate interest, and unable to be able to address the practical aspirations of the American people for healthcare, for education, for jobs, for a clean environment, for protecting the globe, for peace,” he said. “And so we, today, learn a little bit more about the Democratic Party being for sale. Well, that’s nothing new, nor is it new that the same goes for the Republican Party.”

The Washington Post: It’s time for the United States to act on Azerbaijan

September 9, 2016 By administrator

us-azerbiajan-to-endSenior director for human rights and democracy at the McCain Institute for International Leadership and a former assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights and labor, David J. Kramer and adjunct professor at George Mason University and former U.S. ambassador to Azerbaijan and to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Richard Kauzlarich published a joint article in The Washington Post, where they touch upon the human rights restrictions and imprisonment of opposition members in Azerbaijan, calling the President of the United States to impose sanctions against Azerbaijan.

“Since the April summit, Aliyev’s regime has intensified its crackdowns on freedoms. Azerbaijan’s rapid, dangerous deterioration demands more decisive action from the United States, yet the Obama administration has remained largely silent. The government in Baku has increased its arrests and detentions of another dozen opposition figures, peaceful religious believers and civil society activists. Nearly 100 political prisoners are languishing in the country’s jails,” they write.

The authors also think that the situation on the ground may get even worse as Aliyev’s regime plans to force a referendum which aims to enhance his powers. “The result of the referendum is already known; we can be sure that the government will ensure its approval. That means that Aliyev can extend his term from five to seven years, create new positions of vice president (to which he might name a member of his family) and lower the age for members of parliament — opening the door for his son Heydar to be elected. It would not be a surprise if elections were called early under the new constitution to ratify these authoritarian steps.”

David J. Kramer and Richard Kauzlarich call the U.S. President to impose sanctions against Azerbaijan. “In the past, we have called for sanctions — asset freezes and visa bans — against Azerbaijani officials involved in and responsible for gross human rights abuses. President Obama doesn’t need new legislation to take such measures; he can do so under existing presidential authorities. Beyond that, we should withhold U.S. support for International Monetary Fund and World Bank assistance should Azerbaijan request it amid its deteriorating economic situation and end Overseas Private Investment Corporation and Export-Import Bank lending to Azerbaijan.”

They also write that the U.S. also needs to get the Europeans on board with similar measures.

Turkey to blame for US, Russia failure to effect ceasefire in Syria: Analyst

September 5, 2016 By administrator

obama greenlight erdoganTurkey is to blame for no outcome in the US-Russia talks over the situation in Syria, an analyst says.

“Grave differences” remained between Moscow and Washington to finalize a ceasefire in the war-ravaged Muslim country, according to US President Barack Obama.

“We’re not there yet,” Obama said on the sidelines of the G20 economic summit in Hangzhou, China, on Sunday. “It’s premature for us to say that there is a clear path forward, but there is the possibility at least for us to make some progress on that front.”

Reporters had been invited by the US for a planned announcement of ceasefire by US Secretary of State John Kerry and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov but the department later cancelled it as the two failed to reach a deal.

According to Washington-based author and investigative journalist Wayne Madsen, the reason for such a failure is “because the US is giving a green light to Turkey to invade northern Syria, where the Turkish military, including Turkish armored divisions, are successfully seizing ground from both the Syrian army and the Syrian Kurdish groups.”

Madsen anticipated that “as long as the Turkish army has its military forces in Syria and [they] are acting as proxies for the Pentagon, the US sees no need to come to a ceasefire.”

On the other hand, it is “difficult” for Russians to clinch a deal with the Obama administration, which will not stay in power for long as the November presidential election approaches.

Meanwhile, “the perceived successor to Obama, [Democratic nominee] Hillary Clinton has made no secret of the fact that she intends to wage war against the Russian forces in Syria and any other country that refuses to follow her orders.”

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura estimates that over 400,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

Turkey summons US envoy over remarks on Syria operation

August 31, 2016 By administrator

us-ambassador-turkeyTurkey has summoned the United States’ ambassador to Ankara, John Bass, to express the government’s disturbance over statements issued by Washington that suggested a loose agreement had been reached between Turkey and the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) group, the Hurriyet Daily News reports.

“It has been underlined that such statements are by no means acceptable and that they do not comply with the alliance relationship,” read a statement issued by Tanju Bilgiç, spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry, late on Aug. 30.

Bilgiç’s statement came after Ash Carter, the U.S. secretary of defense; Brett McGurk, the U.S. special envoy to coordinate the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL); and spokespersons from the Department of Defense and the White House each urged Turkey to stop clashing with the PYD in northern Syria.

Turkey’s concerns over such remarks were dispatched to Bass by Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry Ferdiun Sinirlioğlu on Aug. 30.

“The objectives of the Euphrates Shield Operations are known,” Bilgiç said, adding that Turkey would continue until all “terror groups” are pushed away from the Turkish border so that they will not be able to “pose a threat to Turkish citizens.”

Bilgiç also reiterated Turkey’s expectation that the U.S. would keep its word that PYD forces would be withdrawn to the east of the Euphrates.
