Turkey gendarmerie officer: Dink’s assassin opened flag at police station at prosecutor’s directive

August 1, 2017 By administrator

Hrant dink killer turkish flagGendarmerie officer Birol Ustaoğlu, who is a defendant in the Hrant Dink murder case, gave testimony at the ongoing trial into this case, in Istanbul.

Ustaoğlu, who is detained by court decision, said after arresting Dink’s murderer Ogün Samast, they had taken him to the gendarmerie, and then to a police precinct, according to Cumhuriyet (Republic) daily of Turkey.

The gendarmerie officer stressed that the infamous photo of Samast and the police officers with a Turkish flag was taken at the police station, and on the day of his arrest.

“It was apparent that they had instructed him [Samast] to say nothing,” noted Birol Ustaoğlu. “Subsequently, a camera came to the room, Samast asked whether he could take out a [Turkish national] flag, [and] the prosecutor instructed to allow raising the flag and to definitely take a picture of this instant.”

According to the gendarmerie officer, a national intelligence officer also was in the room during the interrogation of Dink’s assassin.

Hrant Dink, the founder and chief editor of Agos Armenian weekly of Istanbul, was gunned down on January 19, 2007, outside the then office of this newspaper.

In 2011, the perpetrator, Ogün Samast, was sentenced by a juvenile court to 22 years and ten months for the murder.

After long court proceedings and appeals, however, a new probe was ultimately launched in this murder case, and regarding numerous former and serving senior Turkish officials’ complicity in this assassination.

BEIRUT: Turkish flag Terrorism Spark Controversy at Riyadi & Armenian Homenetmen Lebanese Basketball Game

January 10, 2017 By administrator

BEIRUT, Lebanon (A.W.)—Two Turkish flags raised at the Dec. 8 Lebanese basketball match between Armenian club Homenetmen and Riyadi has sparked much controversy in the past few days. Photographs of the flags began circulating on social media networks shortly after the game—a display that many are calling a targeted attack against the Homenetmen players and fans.

Mohammed Khoder, a supporter of the Riyadi club, tweeted “Tonight we’ll be raising the Turkish flag in the basketball game against Homentmen Armenian Lebanese team! BURNNN,” prior to tip off. The tweet, which was later taken down, led people to believe that the premeditated act was deliberately provocative.

Amman-based Al Bawaba news outlet reported on the incident and published a photo that a Riyadi fan page posted on Facebook with the following message: “If you want to prevent us from raising the Turkish flag at the stadium, then prevent them from singing the Armenian national anthem at their stadium,” in Arabic.

On Dec. 9, Riyadi issued an official statement on its Facebook page in response to the incident, denouncing the raising of the Turkish flag and condemning the provocation.

While Homenetmen suffered its first loss of the season to Riyadi on Dec. 8 after losing 73-66, the team continues to sit atop the standings in the first division of the Lebanese Basketball league. After eight games, the Armenian club has seven wins and one loss.

The Homenetmen Beirut basketball team was founded in 1924 and is considered one of the oldest in the country. The team has one of the biggest fan-bases in Lebanon and thousands of supporters worldwide.

Turkey Police press charges against man with NYT’s Erdoğan caricature

December 21, 2014 By administrator

200025_newsdetailPolice have pressed charges against a man in Turkey after he held a sign containing a New York Times caricature featuring President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan cutting döner kebab — a Turkish dish — which was pictured as a Turkish flag that read “democracy,” in a demonstration on Friday.

Ali Bayram Hanedar was outside of the Samsun Courthouse among a crowd protesting the Dec. 14 media crackdown that resulted in detention of journalists, including Zaman daily Editor-in-Chief Ekrem Dumanlı. Hanedar was holding aloft a banner with a caricature recently published by The New York Times, which shows Erdoğan trimming “Turkey’s democracy,” depicted as a döner kebab, with a blade in his hand.

According to a news report by the Bugün daily, after the demonstration Hanedar was stopped by a policeman, who asked his identity and said there would be charges pressed against him. The policeman explained that the protester’s banner would be examined to see if its display fits the crime of “insulting the Turkish flag.”
