Kremlin says NATO expansion to east will lead to retaliation from Russia

December 2, 2015 By administrator

f565ef0941dc4f_565ef0941dc89.thumbKremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday that the continuing expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation to the east would lead to retaliatory measures from Russia.

The NATO military alliance on Wednesday invited Montenegro to join its ranks.

Peskov added to journalists that the sanctions that Russia had imposed on Turkey over a downed Russian plane were different from the ones the West had imposed on Russia over the Ukraine crisis, since Russia’s sanctions on Turkey were preventative and concerned the threat of terrorism.

Turkish businesses wary as Russia lays out economic retaliation options

November 25, 2015 By administrator

234089Russia is considering canceling a raft of joint business projects with Ankara after Turkey shot down of one of its warplanes, top government officials said on Wednesday, igniting concern among Turkish companies from the tourism, construction and food sectors, which all benefit from Russian business.

On Tuesday, Turkey said its F-16 fighter jets shot down a Russian aircraft for violating Turkish airspace while Moscow denied any such violation. The incident is likely to deal the biggest blow to economic ties between the two countries. Russia and Turkey have important trade and economic ties — their bilateral trade volume in 2014 touched $30 billion. Ankara and Moscow had earlier vowed to raise this figure to as much as $100 billion by the year 2020. Shortly after the downing of a Russian warplane, Moscow said Ankara could expect to be on the receiving end of economic and business sanctions, warning that the move could result in canceling some important joint projects. Initially, Russia came up with a number of economic retaliations relating to critical sectors such as tourism and food.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said on Wednesday that Turkish firms — who are active in everything from construction to retailing — could see their market share in Russia shrink. “The direct consequences could lead to our refusal to take part in a whole raft of important joint projects and Turkish companies losing their positions on the Russian market,” Medvedev said in a statement. Separately on Wednesday, Russia said it is banning imports of poultry meat from a Turkish supplier effective Dec. 1. Russia’s agricultural watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor announced a ban will be imposed on Turkish poultry exporter Standart Gıda Sanayi. Standart is one of 10 Turkish poultry exporter firms to Russia. In another blow to small and medium-sized Turkish exporters to Russia, a flower exporter, Tempo Tarım, in Antalya also said it had withdrawn goods bound for Russia early on Wednesday. The Antalya firm said it will likely cancel a planned delivery to Russia of a truck of flowers scheduled for next week.

Armenia Promises Proportionate Retaliation

January 26, 2015 By administrator

Proportionate-Retaliation“We have no reason to initiate war. We don’t instigate incidents. You know that very well. And we never are the first ones to attack,” President Serzh Sargsyan said on January 26 during a special session at the Defense Ministry dedicated to the 23rd anniversary of the formation of the Armenian army

The President also noted that if and when attacked by Azerbaijan, Armenia reserves the right to take preventative measures and to counter-attack when necessary. “Until recently, our counter operations have been symmetric in terms of form and asymmetric in terms of causing larger casualties,” Sargsyan said and added, “Henceforth, there may be counter-measures that are asymmetric in form.” He warned that Azerbaijan should be prepared for countless surprises on the battlefield if it continued attacks along the borders.

Sargsyan promised that for every Armenian loss, the Azerbaijanis would be a high price: “They have paid a high price, today they are paying a high price and that is how it will be in the future.”

He said that Azerbaijan is responsible for destabilizing the situation on the borders and its tactics are clearly to blackmail the international community and to show the world what it is capable of doing if its demands are not met. Sargsyan said that Azerbaijan’s military and political leadership is playing a dangerous game because they have not seriously considered the “horrible consequences this will have for them.”

The pattern of Azerbaijan’s attacks on Armenia are obvious and even transparent, Sargsyan noted. He said that anytime there is evidence of domestic turmoil or if a tragedy occurred in Armenia, Azerbaijan used that opportunity to ‘show itself’ on the frontlines. “We never boasted during the war, but on the battlefield we imposed our rule,” he said adding that Armenia has never been as strong as it is today.

“Let no one think that we are sitting with our arms crossed, waiting to see when the catastrophe will enter our home. For those who prepare that catastrophe for us, we are obligated to be merciless,” noted Sargsyan and threatened that Armenia is prepared to cause irreversible damage to its opponent.

“We remain committed that the proper way is to come to an agreement, to continue the negotiations…and that is possible only through maintaining the ceasefire and through building bridges of trust. No one has achieved anything good by burning bridges,” he said.

Concluding his remarks, Sargsyan added, “Once again, I publicly announce: We are prepared for the good and the bad. All potential alternatives are on my table. We can and are obligated to negotiate for peace with a realistic partner. We are obligated and without condition, will enforce peace on an unrealistic adversary.”

Since the beginning of January, tensions on the Armenia-Azerbaijan state border and the Nagorno Karabakh-Azerbaijan Line of Contact have increased with a number of bloody clashes taking place resulting in casualties on both sides.

The Spokesman for the Armenian Defense Ministry Artsrun Hovhannisyan had informed the public that on the evening of January 25 and the morning hours of January 26, the borders of Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh had been relatively calm.

The Nagorno Karabakh Defense Ministry had issued a press release that on “January 24-25 the adversary had violated the ceasefire regime about 800 times, during which different caliber weapons had been used to fire about 14,000 times on Armenian frontline positions.” Retaliatory operations had been conducted by the frontline units of the Karabakh Defense Army resulting in three Azerbaijani casualties and a number of injured. The Armenian side did not suffer any casualties.

Armenian Military Promises Retaliation for Helicopter Downing

November 15, 2014 By administrator

YEREVAN (RFE/RL)—The armed forces of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh on Friday vowed to retaliate strongly against Azerbaijan for shooting down an Armenian helicopter gunship on “the line of contact” east of Karabakh.

“What happened was unfortunate for us and impudent of them. We will undoubtedly deliver a proportionate — and even a bit disproportionate — answer to their actions,” Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanian told reporters in Stepanakert.

Ohanian’s first deputy, Davit Tonoyan, similarly spoke of “collateral damage” which he said the Azerbaijani military will suffer as a consequence of the “new form of ceasefire violation.” “By collateral damage I mean Armenian forces’ possible actions in response to the downing of the helicopter and, of course, the risk of disrupting the negotiation process and nullifying efforts to strengthen the ceasefire,” he said in written remarks released in Yerevan.

Neither Ohanian nor Tonoyan elaborated on the retaliatory actions planned by the Armenian side. General Movses Hakobian, the commander of the Karabakh Armenian army, would also not be drawn on them. “It’s up to the army to decide what actions we will take,” Hakobian said.

Ohanian and Hakobian answered journalists’ questions after watching, together with President Serzh Sarkisian, Armenian military exercises held in and around Karabakh. Both military leaders reiterated strong Armenian denials of Baku’s claims that the Mi-24 combat helicopter flew over Azerbaijani army positions and attempted to attack them before being shot down on Wednesday.

The helicopter fell to the no man’s land separating Azerbaijani and Karabakh Armenian forces in the Aghdam district just east of Karabakh. Hakobian said his troops have still not been able to approach the wreckage of the helicopters and recover the bodies of its three crew members presumed dead because of heavy Azerbaijani gunfire.

The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said on Friday that its forces are not firing at the crash site.

The authorities in Stepanakert have asked the International Committee of the Red Cross (IRCR) to help arrange the repatriation of the three pilots: Major Sergey Sahakian, Senior Lieutenant Sargis Nazarian and Lieutenant Azat Sahakian. An ICRC spokeswoman in Yerevan, Zara Amatuni, told RFE/RL’s Armenian service that the Red Cross has already asked the Azerbaijani authorities to allow its representatives to inspect the wreckage.
