(Video) Millions of Armenians Around the world march on Turkish Consulate & Embassies, Demanded Recognizing Armenian Genocide

April 24, 2016 By administrator

Thousands of people around the globe took to the streets on Sunday to commemorate the 1915 massacre of up to 1.5 million Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Empire, demanding that Turkey recognize the atrocity as genocide.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and First Lady Rita Sargsyan laid flowers at the Armenian Genocide Memorial in the country’s capital, Yerevan.

The event in memory of the victims was attended by Hollywood star George Clooney and renowned French singer Charles Aznavour, who is of Armenian descent.

Sargsyan used the 101st anniversary to draw international attention to a recent flare up in hostilities in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. The multi-ethnic enclave populated by Armenians and Azerbaijanis has been in political limbo since a conflict between the groups involving tens of thousands of casualties ended in 1994 with the region self-declaring independence. Turkish ally Azerbaijan, however, still claims it as its own, and has not backed off its intention to take back control of the territory.

“I declare for the entire world to hear: there will be no purging or deportation of the Armenians of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh). We will not allow another Armenian Genocide. We – means the Armenian nation, all its segments, we – means our Armenian consolidation,” the president said in a statement.

Several thousand people gathered in Moscow carrying Armenian and Russian flags to mark the somber anniversary.

“The memory of the victims of the genocide will live on forever,” read a huge black banner displayed in Russia’s capital.

A group of teens participating in a flash mob removed red bands from their mouths as an Armenian girl passed by in a symbolic gesture meaning that it is impossible to hush up the genocide any longer.

In Greece, hundreds of ethnic Armenians and sympathizers marched through Athens to denounce Turkey and slam Azerbaijan for allegedly escalating the conflict over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

The protesters marched to the Turkish and Azeri embassies in center of the Greek capital waving Armenian flags and carrying signs reading: “Truth will Triumph,”“Azerbaijan Land of Crimes,” and “Hands off Armenia.”

Meanwhile, thousands of demonstrators in Iran participated in an event at Tehran’s St. Sarkis Cathedral, in which they also urged Ankara to recognize the genocide of Armenians and condemned the recent uptick in hostilities in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

“Our demand is that Turkey recognizes the historical truth and accepts legal responsibility for it,” Karen Khanlari, an Iranian-Armenian lawmaker, told RT’s Ruptly video agency.

In 1914, at the beginning of World War I, around 2 million Armenians were living in the Ottoman Empire, but that number decreased to less than half a million over the next eight years.

The mass killings began on April 24, 1915, when 250 Armenian intellectuals were detained by Ottoman authorities and later executed in their capital, Constantinople, which is now present-day Istanbul.

Most of the Ottoman Empire’s Armenians were subsequently displaced, deported, or placed in concentration camps, ostensibly for rebelling against the Ottomans and siding with the Russians during World War I.

Turkey – the successor of the Ottoman Empire – admits that many Armenians were mistreated at the time, but claims that the number of victims has been grossly exaggerated and that there was no “genocide” or official systematic effort to eliminate the Armenian minority.

Acknowledging crimes against humanity would not only damage Ankara’s international reputation, but also leave it liable for reparations, which some Armenian human rights groups estimate should be worth trillions of dollars.

On April 25 of last year, Turkey held a celebration to mark 100 years since the Gallipoli Landings, the Ottoman Empire’s greatest success in World War I, in order to distract attention from the 100th anniversary of the genocide, angering many in Armenia

LOS ANGELES—The city police and fire officials, as well as department of transportation representatives confirmed Wednesday that the actual number of participants in the April 24 March For Justice to commemorate the Armenian Genocide Centennial eclipsed the initial 130,000 reported by the Los Angeles Times. The agencies place the official total at more than 160,000.

Following the march, which was one of the largest in Los Angeles history, the Los Angeles police, fire and transportation departments reviewed the footage captured by the city helicopters and based on a commonly-used equation, which is used to tabulate crowd numbers, concluded that the actual number of participants exceeded 160,000.

Aram Sahakian, Senior Transportation Engineer In Charge of Special Traffic Operations and Emergency Response at the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, confirmed the new tally to officials of the Armenian Genocide Centennial Committee of Western US, which organized the March For Justice as the sole commemorative event in Los Angeles on April 24.

The police, fire and transportation agencies also commended and praised the March For Justice organizing committee for their diligence in securing volunteer monitors, who were for the most part members of the Armenian Youth Federation, and who, along the route of the march, worked with law enforcement and transportation officials to ensure the smooth progression of the event.

Captain Dave Storaker of the Los Angeles Police Department, who was in charge of the overall march on April 27 tweeted to the AYF saying: “My compliments to the Monitors. You all did a wonderful job on what the news reports the largest event of its kind.”

The March For Justice started at the intersection of Western Avenue and Sunset Boulevard, where an opening program featuring remarks by LA Mayor Eric Garcetti, California Senate President Pro Tempore Kevin de Leon and Los Angeles City Councilman Mitch O’Farrell kicked off the march.

Marchers headed west on Sunset Boulevard, then south on La Brea Avenue and then west on Wilshire Boulevard, where the crowd gathered in front of the Turkish Consulate building for a rally that included remarks by Representative Adam Schiff and Los Angeles City Councilmembers Paul Krekorian and Paul Koretz, whose passionate speeches elevated the event’s importance and highlighted the need for justice for the Armenian Genocide.

“This further shows the strength of our community,” said Garo Ghazarian, co-chair of the AGCC Western US. “It also highlights the resolve of the Armenian-American community to fight for our national aspirations and demands in the name of justice for the Armenian Genocide.”

“We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the city and county officials and agencies who came together on that day and were part of the March for Justice,” said Talin Yacoubian, the co-chair of the AGCC Western US. “We especially thank the Los Angeles Police, Fire and Transportation departments for their support and utmost professionalism, which made the march a tremendous success.”

Lebanon Tens of thousands march in Beirut to commemorate Genocide

April 24, 2015 By administrator

191155Tens of thousands marched north of Beirut Friday, April 24, to commemorate the Armenian Genocide centennial, the Daily Star reports.

Carrying Armenian flags and white signs with the picture of a violet forget-me-not flower which was adopted as the symbol of the centennial, the marchers trekked south from the Armenian Apostolic Patriarchate in Antelias to the Burj Hammoud Stadium.

Speaking before the march, head of the Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia Aram I said Armenians do not need condolences from Turkey, but “recognition and justice.”

“We tell the world that we emerged victorious from the genocide because our people lived,” he said.

Prominent members of the Armenian community spoke on the occasion, highlighting the need for all countries of the world to recognize the genocide and pressure Turkey to do the same.

Also, Prime Minister Tammam Salam called the head of the Armenian Apostolic church in Lebanon Friday, expressing sympathy with the world’s Armenians over the tragedy.

“Lebanese people highly appreciate the positive and significant role the Armenian sects are playing at the national level, which aims to boost national harmony and unity,” Salam said, according to a statement released by his office.

The PM added that Lebanon “takes pride in all its components and shares their causes and all the sufferings they have endured throughout history.”

The Armenian Genocide

The Armenian Genocide (1915-23) was the deliberate and systematic destruction of the Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire during and just after World War I. It was characterized by massacres, and deportations involving forced marches under conditions designed to lead to the death of the deportees, with the total number of deaths reaching 1.5 million.

The majority of Armenian Diaspora communities were formed by the Genocide survivors.

Present-day Turkey denies the fact of the Armenian Genocide, justifying the atrocities as “deportation to secure Armenians”. Only a few Turkish intellectuals, including Nobel Prize winner Orhan Pamuk and scholar Taner Akcam, speak openly about the necessity to recognize this crime against humanity.

The Armenian Genocide was recognized by Uruguay, Russia, France, Lithuania, the Italian Chamber of Deputies, majority of U.S. states, parliaments of Greece, Cyprus, Argentina, Belgium and Wales, National Council of Switzerland, Chamber of Commons of Canada, Polish Sejm, Vatican, European Parliament and the World Council of Churches.

The 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide signifies a global demand for justice by Armenians worldwide and all people of good will. The Centennial marks one of the 20th century’s greatest crimes against humanity. In 1915, the Turkish Government began a premeditated and systematic campaign to uproot the Armenian population from its ancestral homeland and slaughter 1.5 million defenseless men, women and children. Turkey must finally acknowledge its responsibility for the Genocide and make appropriate moral, financial and territorial restitution, as mandated by the fundamental norms of international law and civilized society.
