British market to open for Armenian IT companies in February 2017

October 8, 2016 By administrator

it-marketYEREVAN. – In February 2017, 10-15 Armenian IT companies will meet with their potential partners in Britain.

Founding director of BSC, Samvel Gevorgyan, told the aforementioned to Armenian News – NEWS.am during DigiTech Expo 2016 technological exhibition held in Yerevan.

The business trip will take place in cooperation with the UK Embassy in Armenia and Union of Information Technology Enterprises (UITE).

The Armenian companies have not yet tried to take orders from Britain. The local business is also mainly conservative there, preference being given to tested Indian companies. “But recently they have begun looking for alternatives in other countries. Therefore, Armenian companies can now draw attention,” Gevirgyan noted.

The meetings will be held with four groups of potential partners: British IT unions, state institutions supporting British IT sector and foreign trade ties, direct customers (companies, giving outsourcing orders) and IT consulting companies, which will help establishing partnership between Armenian companies and the British colleagues.

The process of getting familiarized with Britain is still ahead, but there will be no ‘discounts’ for the newcomers: It will be necessary to reach agreements or launch negotiations on the ground.  And because there are no trifles in the work with the British, the Armenian IT specialists will be provided assistance with regard to holding talks and developing business models according to the British standards.

“We will select the companies based on what projects they are implementing, what clients they are already working with and the kind of feedback they have. We want to attach greater importance to small companies, but we will put no restrictions for anyone,” Gevorgyan noted.

To disseminate the knowledge on the IT sphere in Armenia more widely, the Embassy brought to DigiTech journalists of British newspapers.

Armenia’s IT sector needs 3,500-4,000 highly skilled engineers – Hovik Musayelyan

January 8, 2016 By administrator

f568f8db6cce89_568f8db6ccec4.thumbIn an interview with Tert.am, Dr. Hovik Musayelyan, Director of Synopsys Armenia, said that lack of highly skilled personnel remains a major problem of Armenia’s IT sector.

According to different estimates, Armenia’s IT companies need 3,500 to 4,000 engineers.

The reason is that higher schools do not train specialists the private sector needs.

“As soon as higher schools start training such specialists, we’ll say we have not such a problem any longer. The first reason why we have not the required number of engineers is the teaching staff’s professional level. And the second reason is lack of technical equipment,” Mr Musayelyan said.

Armenia’s higher schools do not even have funds for well-equipped laboratories.

Mr Musayelyan points out a need for huge investments – hundreds of millions of US dollars.

“Serious universities worldwide have as big budgets as our state budget.”

As for the accomplishments in 2015, Musayelyan particularly pointed out to two projects: one for secondary schools and the other for universities offering higher educational programs for future IT specialists.

“In the area of general education, an exceptional project was launched in 2015, making microelectronics telecommunication and information technologies compulsory subjects. At the world’s most authoritative Education World Forum, which is to take place in London on January 17, Armenia will introduce that project as an exceptional [initiative], as it is the first ever country to implement it.”

Commenting on the project for higher educational institutions, Musayelyan said that the concept for having a technological university was elaborated at the end of last year. “It is a very ambitious project which will yield its results in the couple of years to come,” he said.

Musayelyan added that he finds educational initiatives of the kind the best possible way to bridge the human resources’ gap on Armenia’s IT labor market. “If our records in late 2016 demonstrate that the vacancies for high-quality specialists have decreased in number, we will be able to state that we have a progress,” he said.

Speaking at a news conference, Vostanik Marukhyan said he expects especially substantial recommendations in the drawing up of the academic curricula.
“The IT sector develops dynamically, so it is for the commissioner to dictate us the functions we should fulfill while giving corresponding knowledge to our students. Secondly, the Employers’ Association should serve for us as a platform for training the professors periodically,” he  added.

Mr Marukhyan said he feels proud that the university headed by him has become a leader in Armenia’s IT sector thanks to its powerful human capital.
“Cooperation with employers must impart a new quality and content to the organization of our educational processes,” he said.
