UCLA law school to receive $20 million for human rights institute to study the Armenian genocide and other atrocities

The Promise

By Teresa Watanabe,

In a unique blend of Hollywood and human rights, the UCLA law school will receive $20 million in pledged proceeds from a new film on the Armenian genocide to expand its research and teaching of persecution, the university announced Monday.

The donation by a film company founded by the late Kerkor “Kirk” Kerkorian, an Armenian American philanthropist and businessman, will help establish the Promise Institute for Human Rights at UCLA School of Law.

The institute, which also will receive other donations and support from UCLA, will help the Westwood campus expand its research and advocacy on genocide awareness and prevention as well as the intersections between human rights and health, refugees, immigration and civil rights, said law school Dean Jennifer L. Mnookin.

She said the gift will help UCLA hire more faculty, sponsor guest speakers, host human rights symposia and support students through fellowships. UCLA law students and faculty currently work with human rights organizations in countries including Bangladesh, Honduras, India and South Africa, and with the United Nations and the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.

“What we’d like to become is the West Coast powerhouse for the study and practice of human rights,” Mnookin said.

Eric Esrailian, a UCLA doctor and great-grandson of genocide survivors, helped Kerkorian launch the film company Survival Pictures in 2012, to expand awareness of human rights atrocities. Kerkorian, who owned the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio and is credited with helping develop Las Vegas with such hotels as the MGM Grand, donated more than $1 billion to charitable causes during his lifetime. He died in 2015 at age 98.

Survival Pictures’ debut production, “The Promise,” is set to open Friday as the first major film on the Armenian genocide. Historians estimate that 1.5 million Armenians and other ethnic and religious minorities perished at the hands of the Ottoman Turks beginning in 1915, although the Turkish government denies there was any official policy of ethnic cleansing.

The film is directed by Terry George — who directed and co-wrote “Hotel Rwanda” about genocide in that African nation — and stars Christian Bale, Charlotte Le Bon and Oscar Isaac. Co-producers are Esrailian, Phoenix Pictures chairman Mike Medavoy and veteran film producer William Horberg.

Esrailian said the team began work on the film in 2010 but kept the project on the down low to avoid any possible political attempts to quash it.

The company also has produced a documentary, “Intent to Destroy,” about the Armenian genocide that is set for release April 25 at the Tribeca Film Festival.

“As horrible as the Armenian genocide was, there are other ethnic and religious groups that have suffered persecution as well,” Esrailian said, adding that human rights crises exist right now in Syria, the Congo and South Sudan.

Both the feature film and the UCLA institute bear the word “promise” to reflect a commitment not to forget atrocities of the past and to fight against intolerance and persecution today, he said.

He said his team was inspired by the USC Shoah Foundation, which was launched by filmmaker Steven Spielberg to preserve the memory of the Holocaust and educate the public about it and has since expanded its work to other genocides. With genocide awareness and human rights work underway at the city’s two premier universities, Los Angeles is set to become a national hub of research and activism on the issue, Esrailian said.

The center is expected to open this fall.

Armenia, Russia launch joint investment fund

March 25, 2017 By administrator

The joint Russian-Armenian investment fund opened in Yerevan on Saturday in an official ceremony attended by Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan and several dozen Armenian businessmen from the Russian Federation.
The initiative to create the Armenian Investors’ Club was proposed by major Russian-Armenian entrepreneurs back in February, who justified the idea by the need to assist in the reforms process in the country and back the government-proposed joint initiatives and business plans.
“I know each and every member of the club as I maintain friendly relations with most. This club, as a matter of fact, will mark a groundbreaking moment for us not only because it promises healthy and long-lasting investments but also because it is expected to develop a new corporate culture,” he said, highlighting the need of active capacity-building to impart a new quality to the business atmosphere in Armenia.

The Armenian Investors’ Club is the first non-public contractual investment fund in Armenia registered by the Central Bank. Its mission is to address key sectors of economy (energy, including alternative power production, energy and tourism infrastructures, mining, minerals’ re-procession, food and light industries) through attracting internal and external financial means.

Armenian -Russian investment fund to be established within months, Suren Karayan says

January 26, 2017 By administrator

YEREVAN, January 26. /ARKA/. The Armenian-Russian investment fund will be established in the coming months, the economic development and investment minister Suren Karayan said today.

It was Armenian Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan who proposed that an Armenian-Russian investment fund to be set up with a view to funding Armenia’s priority economic sectors. According to the Armenian government, the Russian side positively assessed the proposal. During Karapetyan’s official visit to Moscow earlier this week the parties looked at the possibility of Russian companies’ involvement in the free economic zone to be established near the Armenian-Iranian border. Appreciating the proposal, Russian Premier Dmitry Medvedev expressed the opinion that Russian companies will show interest in this issue.

Speaking to local reporters today, Suren Karayan said the main purpose of the fund is financing and investment in sectors that will lead to growth of trade turnover between the countries, substitution of imported goods, development of industrial cooperation and growth of exports.

He said that during prime minister’s visit to the Russian capital numerous meetings and discussions were held with representatives of the Russian government and Russian businessmen of Armenian origin, who expressed their willingness to make investments in Armenia.

According to Karayan, the Russian side is interested in Armenia’s energy sector, renewable energy, agricultural products and mining industry. The minister noted that similar negotiations are being held not only with Russia but other countries as well.

The idea was discussed also by Karayan and Russian industry and trade minister Denis Manturov on January 23

ARF Western US to Raise Funds to Rebuild Artsakh Villages and Support Soldiers

April 30, 2016 By administrator

with-artsakh-logoGLENDALE—In a statement issued Friday, the ARF Dashnaktutyun Western US Central Committee appealed to the community to raise much-needed funds to help rebuild areas of Artsakh most hard-hit by recent Azerbaijani attacks, as well as to provide support to families of fallen soldiers.

Below is the complete text of the announcement.

The heroic people of Artsakh have once again spilled blood defending our homeland. As a clarion call, a mother, while burying her son, expressed the sentiment of the courageous people of Artsakh, “We lost precious lives defending our land. We will not give up one inch of that land to the aggressors.”

The savage attacks by Azerbaijani forces beginning on April 2, along the Nagorno-Karabakh-Azerbaijan border has not only destabilized the region, but also rekindled the possibility of full-scale war threatening the existence of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and its people. Although the Nagorno-Karabakh Defense Army withstood the attacks and delivered a strong response, several villages have been left in ruins, especially the regions of Talish, Mardakert, and Madaghis. The unprovoked aggression has resulted in the loss of civilian and military lives and has taken its toll on the injured soldiers.

We reiterate our solidarity with the government and people of Artsakh, as well as the Nagorno-Karabakh Defense Army, as they confront yet another breech of the cease fire by Azerbaijan.

The ARF Dashnaktutyun Western US Central Committee, heeding the call from our brethren in Artsakh, has pledged to play a central role in the effort to rebuild the devastated areas as quickly as possible so that the residents may return to their normal lives, and to send a decisive message to Azerbaijan that its military threats will not deter the spirit of the Armenian people and the development of Artsakh.

We call upon all Armenians to join the ACF “With Artsakh” and AYF “With Our Soldiers” efforts in order to actively bring their financial and moral support to free and independent Artsakh.

The National Liberation Struggle for Artsakh began in 1988 and war threatened its existence in the 1990’s. The ARF Western US, with its members, supporters and the vast and diverse affiliate organizations has continually stood with Artsakh and spared nothing to ensure its survival. The time has come to recommit to assisting our brave brothers and sisters in the homeland.
