Ari Guiragos Armenian School: The Anchor of Orange County’s Armenian Community

July 1, 2014 By administrator

When your eyes start watering from happiness and emotion, you know something is right and well worth the sacrifice. On Sunday, June 8, 2014, AGM’s school year culminated in a very special year end program and agmgraduation ceremony at Godinez High School Auditorium in Santa Ana. In what turned out to be a spectacular performance put forth by the students, nearly 450 audience members witnessed the vital role of an Armenian school in the lives of both the youth and community involved.

The students performed classic Armenian poetry, songs, and dance to outline the theme of the evening’s program which was appropriately titled “The Traveler to Eternity” depicting scenes from Gevok Emin’s classic novel. Just as the students presented the millennium of rich Armenian history, culture, and religion, the performances underscored the dedication of Armenian families in Orange County to their children and national identity. “The Traveler to Eternity” was capped with a scene of today’s Armenian youth living in the United States and preserving its heritage within a united community. The correlation between hundreds of years of struggle runs parallel to the daily joy of witnessing a strong vibrant Armenian school.

Following the performance was the kindergarten and sixth grade graduation ceremony, where students received their diplomas and were recognized for their hard work and efforts throughout the year. The sixth grade students expressed their heartfelt words of gratitude to the school as they bid AGM a bittersweet farewell.

It takes a lot to run a village, even a small one. It takes trust and honesty but, more importantly, it requires passion and vision. AGM’s model of reinventing itself is the classic and defined example of the future of Armenian schools around the world. Today’s sophisticated parents and families demand a multitude ranging from prime education to extracurricular activities intertwined in a cultural and religious foundation. This is what AGM has accomplished and proudly displayed on Sunday afternoon. The future of A.G. Minassian Armenian School and the OC Armenian Community is bright given what was witnessed.

To enroll your children at the Minassian School, please call the office at (714) 839-7831 or visit agminassianschool.org.

Armenia wary of Turkey’s role after the incident at the border of Nakhichevan

June 27, 2014 By administrator

Some new elements have appeared in the issue of Karabakh and Yerevan officials have acknowledged. In particular, they talked about the attempts of direct involvement of Turkey in the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict arton100630-480x320and the ability to recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh in case of an escalation of the conflict. Apparently, these two trends are related.

On June 5, an incident was reported at the border between Armenia and Nakhichevan, an Azerbaijani enclave which is confined to the southwest of Armenia and, unlike Azerbaijan this “territory” has a short border with Turkey. Two Armenian soldiers were killed in the incident. In this respect, the Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanian made two remarkable statements. He stated that if she continued escalation would have serious serious consequences for Azerbaijan and stated bluntly that there are units in the Turkish army separated from Nakhichevan. In support, information was posted on the latest Turkish-Azerbaijani joint military exercises.

The same day, commenting on the incident, Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Shavarsh Kocharian said that if climbing did not stop there would be only one way – the recognition of independence of Karabakh. “In my opinion, the pursuit of such a policy, openly racist, militaristic, I could tell a medieval policy could still lead to the recognition of the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh by the international community. Because there is no other way in this situation, “he said.

In an interview with RFE / RL, Head of the Centre for Regional Studies Richard Giragosian said the French President François Hollande and the OSCE Chairman-in-Office Didier Burkhalter have introduced new proposals in the negotiations on Karabakh. In particular, according Giragosian, the issue is the creation of mechanisms to investigate the incidents and the return of Nagorno-Karabakh in the negotiation process. Shavarsh Kocharian stated that the border provocations were the response of Azerbaijan to these proposals.

Turkey has never hidden his interest in the victory of Azerbaijan in the Karabakh conflict, in addition, since 1993, Turkey has kept the border with Armenia closed, cutting off Yerevan major regional projects. Turkey has not made any secret of the fact that it supports the modernization of the Azerbaijani army. However, the direct involvement of Turkey in the conflict, and not in the territory of Karabakh, but Armenia itself, can become an opportunity for Armenia to seek the help of international blocs. Armenia can either turn to the Organization of the Collective Security Treaty, a defense pact led by Russia which she is a member, or call in NATO, of which Turkey is a member.

It should be noted that British and American military experts group advising Armenia on its second Strategic defense was in Yerevan these jours. it.

Syria, Desecrated relics of Kessab

June 25, 2014 By administrator

Jabhat al-Nusra extremist group militants raided the Armenian Evangelical Holy Trinity Church and Missakian Cultural Center in Kessab.

photo_180167_b62a8937eL’observatoire de la Christianophobie French website posted the photos of destroyed and desecrated churches of Kessab after liberation of the town.

June 25, 2014

On March 21, 2014, Turkish forces shelled Armenian-populated villages of Syria in violation of international laws, further opening the border for militants to seize the region. Along with the surrounding Armenian-populated villages, Kessab, a home to 2,5-3000 Armenians, is located near the Syrian-Turkish border. After Kessab was seized, militants tore off the cross from an Armenian church, replacing it with a black Islamist flag.

On June 16, the top commandment of Syrian armed forces stated that stability in Kessab and adjacent province of Latakia was restored and the extremist militants pushed out, with the terrorist attempt to form a springboard for attacks with a sea outlet at the Turkish border thwarted.

At present, houses and streets of Kessab are fully demined, with utility services operating and electricity supplies restored. According to mayor Vasken Chaparian, 250 out of 600 Armenian families who left the town are back, restoring Armenian presence in the lands of the historic Cilicia. Earlier, at the meeting with the Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad promised that Kessab Armenians will return to their homes and was true to his word.

Following the Kessab tragedy, Armenians and Alawites accused the Prime Minister Erdogan-led Turkish government of triggering the attack. Armenians who fled to Latakia told the BBC Turkish Service about the attack which forced them to leave their homes.

“One morning we were woken up by loud explosions and had to flee to Kessab at once, with no clothes, money or passports. We just wanted to survive,” a female resident of Kessab recalls. Some Armenians stayed in Kessab, only sending women and children to Latakia.

“We’re afraid to go back, though we’ve been told its safe now. Still, 7 Armenians and 2 Alawites went missing, with their fates unknown. Who will give us safety guarantees? I saw an Armenian church raided, stripped of decorations, icons and burned down. All the museum artifacts were destroyed,” a priest named Gevorg reminisced.

Kessab self-defense units and Hezbollah Syrian Shiite group participated in the liberation of the town, Ora Pro Siria reported citing the patriarch of the Armenian Catholic Church Nerses Bedros XIX Tarmouni.

At his visit to a church of St. Michael, the patriarch saw ruined icons, broken crosses, burnt liturgy books, with the place rendered unusable for religious services. According to the patriarch, Islamists’ only goal was to prevent the church from being used as a house of prayer. The parochial school was also demolished.

Jabhat al-Nusra extremist group militants raided the Armenian Evangelical Holy Trinity Church and Missakian Cultural Center in Kessab.

Nerses Bedros XIX hopes that the majority of refugees will return to their homes in Kessab.

The Armenian community of Argentina sent a letter to Pope Francis asking for his intervention in the Syrian conflict, 215956“convinced that his word could bring peace to the conflictive area of Middle East and ensure the return of refugees to their homes”.

“Since June 2, after the Syrian elections, the target of the attacks has been the city of Aleppo. Armenia: The boom in the technology sector and the economic outlook change information

June 21, 2014 By administrator

After nearly two decades of rapid growth, industry technologies and information of Armenia became a rare economic success story for this small country wedged South Caucasus.

arton100981-380x253Export-oriented, technology sector and information (IT) has increased by an average of 22 percent per year during the period 2008-2013, much faster than any other economic sector, according to government data. With a combined capacity of nearly 380 Million $, about 400 IT companies operating in Armenia cutomers represented 3.8 percent of gross domestic product last year to nearly $ 10 billion. The sector currently employs more than 10,000 programmers and software engineers – comparable to the total number of Armenian mining industry, the most important source of export revenue figure.

However, according to the Ministry of Economy, more than half of these high-tech companies have emerged since 2007. “This is the only place where Armenia is successfully compete globally, not even regionally, “said Yeva Hyusian, the center’s director of the Armenian Innovation Microsoft (MICA).

A dozen relatively large companies, most of them subsidiaries of American heavyweights high technology, dominate the sector. Armenian subsidiary of Synopsys Inc., one of the chip designers the largest in the world, employs more than 500 engineers, making it the largest company in the sector. Other U.S. software giant with a presence include Armenian National Instruments, Mentor Graphics and VM Ware.

Armenia has also made its mark on the world stage in the IT sector by homegrown talent as Artavazd Mehrabian, 40, developer of PicsArt, one of the mobile applications world’s most popular photo editing. Another Armenian boot supported by an American partner should publish soon a voice platform presentation Voiceboard, designed as an alternative to the ubiquitous PowerPoint software.

Meanwhile, a joint US-Armenian venture plans to start manufacturing Armenian shelves later this year.

So far, the long-standing problems of Armenia with corruption, lack of competition and the closure of borders with neighboring Azerbaijan and Turkey have had little impact on the rapid growth of the sector. This led some experts to conclude that the knowledge industry is the best economic hope for the future.

Part of the reason may lie in the past.

During the Soviet era, Armenia was the home of dozens of companies that have produced about a third of microelectronics equipment used by the Soviet defense industry. The deceased Research Institute of Mathematical Machines Yerevan, who designed one of the first Soviet computer systems in 1959, had him alone about 10,000 employees in the 1980s.

The Soviet collapse was the death knell of the industry of the state, but strong skills of its experts and modest wage demands have provided fertile ground for a new technology sector that emerged after Armenia had regained its independence . A dozen U.S. software companies mostly owned by the Armenian diaspora largely led the trend.

One such company, Synergy International Systems, based in Vienna, Virginia, moved to Yerevan in 1999. “We started with only four people working in a Yerevan apartment,” said Ashot Hovanesian, founder and president of Synergy. With customers in 55 countries, the company now has Hovanesian 160 employees and plans to double their number in the coming years.

The rapid emergence of these start-up prompted the Armenian government to intensify efforts to support the industry. In recent years, the government has teamed up with foreign donors and corporations, including Microsoft and Nokia to open new centers in Yerevan providing logistical, technical and financial assistance to entrepreneurs in the sector. A “technopark” supported by the government for the same purpose began operating in the second city of Armenia, Gyumri, earlier this year. The sector has gained new momentum when the government recently launched, in cooperation with private investors, a venture capital fund of $ 6 million to start.

Tax breaks are also underway. It is expected that the Parliament adopted later this month a bill that will give a new IT companies with fewer than 15 employees a three-year exemption of 20 percent of the corporate tax. It would also provide a tax on income of 10 percent heavily discounted rates for their employees. The government expects between 40 and 60 IT startups appear each year thereafter. These technology companies are already able to move in tax havens of Armenia began operating last year in premises belonging to Russia in Yerevan.

“The opening of a new IT business in Armenia is now very easy,” commented Hyusian MICA. “We did not have the infrastructure and [these] opportunities there four years.”

New and better ways of training are needed: the number one problem of the Armenian sector at the moment is the poor quality of education in universities underfunded Armenia. Few graduates of universities and institutes Armenians are sufficiently trained to join the companies established without undergoing additional training qualified, say industry leaders. The lack of qualified graduates has resulted in about 2,000 jobs in the IT sector, highly unusual for a country plagued by unemployment unofficially estimated with two digits.

Leaders in the industry say that without improving standards of education that could affect the growth of the sector in the long term. The government has repeatedly promised to address the issue. As a step in this direction, in 2013, he opened a laboratory 6.2 million in computer art, primarily funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development and the U.S. National Instruments, University engineering Armenia.

The private sector also takes action. Synopsys, using its own programs and technical facilities, is sponsoring a chair in computer science at the University of Engineering of Armenia. Synergy recruiting new employees among university students taking courses computer shortcuts.

Despite the shortcomings, officials are optimistic. The average annual growth rate of 22 percent sector should “at least remain the same in the years to come,” predicted Naira Nikoghosian, Head of Information Officer at the Ministry of Economy.

Armenian, Georgian Presidents Meet over Regional Issues

June 18, 2014 By administrator

TBILISI (ArmRadio)—The consistent reinforcement of close Armenian-Georgian relations is among the priorities of Armenia’s foreign policy, Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian-Margvelashvili-2Sarkisian said at a joint press conference with his Georgian counterpart Giorgi Margvelashvili after their meeting in Tbilisi on Wednesday.

“The fragile peace and stability in the South Caucasus is maintained largely due to the effective and strong cooperation between Armenia and Georgia. We have always respected each other’s decisions, aware that the primary goal of any of us is the strengthening of the state, and have rejoiced over this, as Armenia and Georgia are strong together,” President Sarkisian said.

“The political dialogue is the best impetus for boosting the economic cooperation. Concrete directions have already been outlined in the trade relations between the two counties, which include the energy sector, tourism, manufacturing of agricultural products and others. We have registered growth in the commodity turnover and I’m sure we have large unused reserves,” the President added.

During the meeting in Tbilisi, the leaders of the two countries referred to Armenia’s participation in Eurasian integration processes, particularly the prospects of mutually beneficial cooperation with Georgia in that context.

“I’m confident that by signing the Association Agreement with the EU on June 27 and becoming part of the Free Trade Agreement, Georgia will create opportunities for Armenian businessmen, who see their participation on the European market, to make investments in Georgia,” he said, adding that on the other hand, Armenia’s accession to the Customs Union will open opportunities for Georgian partners in the markets of the CU member states.

As for regional security, the Presidents of the two countries agree that the comprehensive settlement of conflicts is possible exceptionally in a peaceful way in line with the principles of international law.
