Seeking to be Armenian, Story of Aharon Meguerditchian was born in the town of Hasanbey near the city of Adana

April 16, 2014 By administrator

BY VARANT MEGUERDITCHIAN

varantpictureAn initiative introduced by the Armenian government to stop the reduction in numbers of its citizenry was the law of dual citizenship. The law which came into effect in 2008 ensured that while large numbers of Armenians continued to leave the country in search of a better life, they did not need to relinquish their Armenian citizenship in order to attain a new nationality and passport. At the same time the law allowed those Armenians whose forebears had escaped the Armenian Genocide and made a new life in a foreign land to become Armenian citizens while retaining the passports of their host country.

My motivation to attain Armenian citizenship is driven by my simple right to be a citizen of the nation-state of Armenia. It can best be explained through my grandfather’s story.

Aharon Meguerditchian was born in the town of Hasanbey near the city of Adana on what is today the southern Mediterranean coast of Turkey. At the age of seven his family and the families of his friends, were rounded up in the town centre by soldiers of the Ottoman Empire. That’s where Aharon’s father, Hovsep, was separated from his family. Along with all the other men of the town, his father’s hands were tied behind his back and his beard set alight as Aharon and his younger brother Manassee, just five, watched on. Aharon, Manassee and their mother, Persape, were instructed to join the caravan of women, children and the elderly in forced marches further south. A few hours into the march, Aharon was told to run as fast and as far as he could with Manassee. The instruction this time did not come from the soldiers; it came from the familiar, loving voice of his mother. Aharon and Manassee did just that: They ran as fast as they could, over the ridge and beyond, without looking back or turning around, until they were alone, until they were ‘safe’.

In a matter of hours, Aharon was no longer a child; he was Manassee’s protector. Luckily, Aharon and Manassee came across Danish missionaries, who placed them on a ship and sent them on their way to a new world. The next ten years Aharon and Manassee spent in an orphanage in Lebanon. Aharon’s journey took him from Adana to Beirut, Buenos Aires, Marseille, back to Beirut and eventually to Sydney where he passed away surrounded by family in 1985.

Despite his burning desire, Aharon never had the chance to be a contributing citizen of the Armenian state. The only ‘Armenian’ document he ever had was his Near East Relief ID provided by the orphanage. I, however, do have that opportunity. Being a citizen makes me no more Armenian but it is a right I choose to exercise and a responsibility I choose to accept.

It is not enough to simply be satisfied that there is now an independent Armenia. As descendants of survivors of the Armenian Genocide, we have a responsibility to ensure that the Armenian nation state fulfils its purpose of serving the needs and protecting the rights of the Armenian people. Armenian citizenship provides us Diasporans the legal rights to have a say in the affairs of the Armenian state. Concerns surrounding state polices on health, education, social welfare, trade, infrastructure and foreign affairs can be more legitimately raised by citizens.

It also gives us the right to put our capabilities, skills and expertise to serve and represent Armenia as fully-fledged citizens of the state where and when required on the international stage.

This should be the purpose driving Diasporans to seek Armenian citizenship and it is disappointing that not more of us are choosing to exercise that right. It was recently reported that some 21,000 Armenians applied for Armenian citizenship in 2013. This represents just a small fraction of the Diaspora and clearly more of us need to be seeking and attaining Armenian citizenship.

But just as we have a responsibility to the Armenian state, the state has a responsibility to us.

The Diaspora Ministry of Armenia website still notes that “the dual citizenship institute is a novelty in Armenia and, as every mechanism it requires more improvement, mitigation and simplification”. The passage continues “This was not intended to cause any trouble for anyone”.

A welcome acknowledgement, but six years after the dual citizenship law came into effect, merely recognizing the cumbersome nature of the process is simply not good enough. With acknowledgement comes responsibility.

My journey toward seeking Armenian citizenship was somewhat challenging. It required multiple back and forth visits to a number of Armenian Ministerial and Departmental offices including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Passports and Visas. On one of those visits I was even instructed to attain verification of my personal documents from the Armenian Embassy in Australia. The staffer was seemingly unaware that there is no Armenian diplomatic representation in Australia. Nonetheless, my application was finally submitted in July 2013 and I expect to attain my Armenian passport during my next visit to Armenia this year.

There are an estimated ten million people who identify as Armenian across the world while just over three million of these hold Armenian citizenship. Armenia must streamline the process of citizenship and actively recruit individuals. It must do so to encourage these people to contribute to the development of Armenian society and nation building from the sciences to the arts, sports and the political arena. It must do so in the interests of national security and prosperity.

After all, a nation state of ten million contributing citizens is much more influential than a state of just three million.

Varant Meguerditchian is the former executive director and president of the Armenian National Committee (ANC) of Australia. He currently works as a government relations professional in Sydney. He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in politics and business administration and is currently completing his second master’s degree in international relations.

AYF Announces 24 Hours of Action

April 16, 2014 By administrator

Asbarez GLENDALE—The Armenian Youth Federation will be holding 24 Hours of Action to demand justice for the Armenian Genocide starting at 2 p.m. on April 24 in front of the Turkish Consulate in Los Angeles.

24houractionThe 24 Hours of Action will begin with protesters disseminating information about the Armenian Genocide to the public. At 4 p.m., the AYF’s annual protest will take place, with community activists and civic leaders across the state coming together to publicly condemn the Republic of Turkey for its continued perpetuation of a campaign resulting in the death of over 1.5 million Armenians 99 years ago. The participants will gather in front of the office of the Turkish Consul General at 6300 Wilshire Blvd. from until 6 p.m. to honor the victims of the Armenian Genocide and demand justice from the Republic of Turkey, as well as U.S. recognition of the genocide.

Following the protest, musical performances and live art will comprise the “Music as Resistance” and “Art as Rebirth” segments of the 24 Hours of Action. Beginning at midnight, protesters will present Gregory Stanton’s eight stages of genocide as they pertain to the Armenian Genocide and others that followed. A second protest rally taking place from noon to 2 p.m. on April 25 will conclude the 24 hours.

The AYF calls on the community and all concerned citizens to join the 24 Hours of Action. The organization is providing free buses to the consulate, which will depart at 2 p.m. on April 24 from various locations throughout the greater Los Angeles area: the Pasadena Armenian Center, St. Mary’s Church in Glendale, and Ferrahian Armenian School in Encino.

The 24-hour protest is among a number of commemoration events organized by the AYF to mark the anniversary of the genocide. A few such noteworthy events include a candlelight vigil at the Burbank City Hall on April 22 hosted by the Burbank “Varak” Chapter and the Cycle Against Denial bike rally on April 27 hosted by the San Fernando Valley “Sardarabad” Chapter.

The protest is a symbolic focal point for the community and represents the AYF’s year-round battle to gain proper recognition and restitution for the crime of genocide perpetrated by the Turkish government. It will be paired with a social media campaign to trend #ArmenianGenocide worldwide in order to bring global awareness to the issue.

Iranian historian on recognition of Armenian Genocide by U.S. Senate

April 15, 2014 By administrator

“Armenian Genocide issue has become a headache for Turkish government,” Abbas Ghare Aghachlu, professor at Turkish “Girisun” university, has told to Iranian IRNA news agency.

Iranian HistorianIranian scientist has touched upon the resolution of recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the foreign relations commission of the U.S. Senate, and has noted, “Previously parliaments of 36 countries had recognized the Armenian Genocide. Regarding the growing tension between Ankara and Washington it is possible that the U.S. Senate will officially recognize the Armenian Genocide implemented by the Ottoman Turkey.”

Abbas Ghare Aghachlu also added, “Before the Jewish lobby was managing to hinder such drafts. The situation changed after the “Mavi Marmara” ship incident. I don’t think that the Jewish lobby will support Turkey as it did before. If the Armenian, Jewish and Greek lobbies unite, the U.S. Senate will approve the Armenian Genocide resolution.”

Coming up to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide the Iranian scientist has noted, “It will be hard for Turkey till 2015; the presidential; and parliamentary elections on one hand and the Syrian crises on another.”

24 April 2015 – Worldwide Reading Commemorating the Centenary of the Armenian Genocide (Appeal)

April 15, 2014 By administrator

The International Literature Festival Berlin (ilb) and the Lepsiushaus Potsdam are calling for a worldwide reading on 24 April 2015 – the day that marks 100 years since the beginning of the Armenian Genocide.

Several hundred Armenian intellectuals – poets, musicians, parliamentary representatives and members of the clergy – were arrested in Constantinople (today Istanbul) on 24 April 1915, and deported to the Turkish interior where most of them were murdered. It was the start of a crime against humanity. The extermination of the Armenians during World War One was the first systematically planned and executed genocide of modern times. More than a million Armenians in the Ottoman Empire died during this genocidal campaign.

The events took place before the eyes of the whole world and were clearly documented by German, Austro-Hungarian, Italian, American, Scandinavian, Armenian and Ottoman sources as well as by a great number of historical research projects. As early as August 1915, The New York Times reported on a methodically planned programme of ethnic cleansing and extermination which was unprecedented in history up to that time. The German Reich’s government, which was allied to the Ottoman Empire, reached the same conclusions without undertaking anything against what was happening.

The Turkish political world denies the Armenian Genocide up to the present day, although the facts have been known for more than a hundred years. The Indian writer Arundhati Roy has spoken publicly about this scandal on many occasions, including at the 2009 International Literature Festival Berlin.

A great number of Armenian voices were silenced in 1915 and in the years thereafter. Since then, others have become loud and have spoken out against forgetting, among them an increasing number of voices from the democratic Turkish civil society. In remembrance of the victims and in association with the demand for international recognition of the genocide, we are calling for a worldwide reading on 24 April 2015, with literary texts from Armenian authors, among them Siamanto, Komitas, Yeghishe Charents, William Saroyan, Hovhannes Shiraz, Paruyr Sevak, Hakop Mntsuri, Silva Kaputikian and Hrant Dink.

Yessayi Ayntablı, the sister Silva, his wife and 35-year-old daughter Ani Hasmig have come with Ayntablı Vakıflı village. In 1958, foreign schools and education at American School is closed the remaining half is still burning. His older brother, “Kesab in Lebanon,” he went on ANCARI can, from there to the U.S. as an electronics engineer in the past. “What do we do to sacrifice one in the family?” He says.

Do not get me wrong, there is a real fighter in front of me. “Syria is not on me in the apple tree. We started with 11 apple trees with my wife, two beautiful gardens we have established, “he says proudly. During the Arab-Israeli war Yessayi Bey thought a bomb near the garden also got arrested. Innocent tortured for 45 days in military prison, then was released. Central location in the beautiful lands duly kidnapped by threatening mob tried to seize. “I always start from scratch in my life. Recently I raised this herd for many years. Now I do not know what happened 300 sheep. ”

“When the explosion were mountain sheep grazing. We have seen previously that lowering of air. My daughter told him withdraw troops from the border I was worried, “he tells the latest period, and adds:” Without having to say Allahu Akbar came with the sound militia. My daughter cried for his head off. I gave him my own hat. Weapon asked. We also have no weapon. They took their mobile phones. They stuck us in that farm. ‘Do not be afraid of our other Armenians have no business. Our troubles with Alevis. Flame, though I will kill my father, ‘they said. They put on the return path to the Catholic Church. ‘You will see the church cleaned. We downloaded a single cross, ‘they said. ‘The church was dirty, “he asked. They did not answer. The interior of the church was filled with broadcasters. When we pray to Der Voğormy were videotaped. Already at that exact moment the bomb exploded. Did you see bombing al-Assad’s men, “they said. On the road again greeted by Governor Yayladağı removed at the border. Vakıflı has given us to eat and go as I was told that the Armenians. Now here we are. ”

Two relatives who could hardly inside the house of Aleppo Anahid Aharonian and Nerses Tangukyan’m going to head. An old woman lies on the mattress. All that said so from the days of old people how to farm, from which an enigma. Ms. Anahid, showing the feet of Mr. Nerses. “Good bad could walk with a cane. For days to sit on the chair, how to look to concrete or swollen now. Kill us, we said right here. They said no. Forced to move or they put the car in your lap. ”

‘You’re working, they place’

I have next to bed again Zaven Hovsepian languidly in the way. Zaven concrete master gardener for 35 years and Gentlemen, “he’re the minority, you do work where they are,” he sums up the life of an oral report. About 500 gardeners in the time regime in Kesab every day, but that a case of bribe income for life is 500 kasalık explains. Town to be evacuated at once and caught slippin ‘into this situation of Armenians angry. “Did you see the scene of our administrators’ Long live our language, our people in there,” he rant. But when it comes to job performance is zero. Already one-third of people trying to Mailroom been an informant. There is nothing called the merger. Even the clergy of the Church to preach the regime had to offer for approval. Now we are. ”

Iraqis lost his wife. Daughter, married stranger in his own words. broken bond with his brother in the United States during this last period. Armenia has remained a dream, you want to get there. “Both my grandfather died in the desert. At that time France laughed at us, half of whom will these lands now? “He asks. Founded in mind also Kesab have stayed at the museum. “Armenian culture around the world brought on the tracks. Look now Kesab own was shattered. ”

One of the most valuable pieces of disarray in the village now Vakıflı. Encroaching upon their compatriots for the Armenian community in Turkey, we know it’s time to remedy a pain. Armenian Church of Surp Asdavaz Foundation’s account, (Ziraat Bank Account No: 33222327-5001 IBAN: TR83 0001 0004 4633 2223 2750 01) the contribution of everyone is waiting for. Of course, when I told them the story as no one can be compensated financially. But with every type of support Kesab Vakıflı the same village that Armenian history, recalling that connects the mouth, has a meaning as to build together the future.

Turkish Intellectuals Who Have Recognized The Armenian Genocide 12- Halil Berktay

April 12, 2014 By administrator

By Hambersom Aghbashian

Halil Berktay (born August 27, 1947  ) , is a Turkish historian and social scientist at Sabancı University and columnist for the daily Taraf. He is the son an Halil-Berktayintellectual Turkish Communist family. As a result of his family’s influence, Halil Berktay remained a Maoist for two decades, before becoming “an independent left-intellectual”.

After graduating from Robert College in 1964, Berktay studied economics at Yale University receiving his Bachelor of Arts in 1968 and Master of Arts in 1969. He went on to earn a PhD from Birmingham University in 1990. He worked as lecturer at Ankara University between 1969–1971 and 1978–1983.Between 1992–1997, he taught at both the Middle East Technical University and Boğaziçi University. He was a visiting scholar at Harvard University in 1997, and taught at Sabancı University before returning to Harvard in 2006. His research areas are the history and historiography of Turkish nationalism in the 20th century. He has also written on the construction of Turkish national memory. In September 2005, Berktay and fellow historians, including Murat Belge, Edhem Eldem, Selim Deringil, convened at an academic conference to discuss the fall of the Ottoman Empire.

Berktay has uncovered that the Turkish government purged many of the evidence’s and documents regarding the Armenian Genocide found in the Turkish archives. According to him, the archive cleansing was “most probably implemented by Muharrem Nuri Birgi, a former Turkish ambassador to London and NATO, and Secretary General of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.” Berktay also claims that “at the time he was combing the archives, Nuri Birgi met regularly with a mutual friend and at one point, referring to the Armenians, ruefully confessed: ‘We really slaughtered them.’(1)

In an interview with K.Muradian (Aztag Daily- Beirut, Nov. 12, 2005,),  Prof. Berktay said “I had been saying in Turkey and in other international forums that in some sense what happened in 1915 was genocide or it was proto-genocide or, even leaving aside the word “genocide”, It was clear that the Armenians of the Ottoman Empire were rounded up, socially deracinated and deported, and, therefore, in the process, comprehensively uprooted and dispossessed, for no other reason than that they were Armenians and it was very clear that simultaneously, extra-legal secret orders for massacres to be organized were sent out to the Teskilât-ı Mahsusa, the special organization of the Committee of Union and Progress.(2)

According to Radikal newspaper (Istanbul, June 30, 2000), Nese Duzel asked Berktay in an Interview ” The Armenian genocide question has again been put on the agenda. In Turkey this subject is taboo. We cannot even discuss it amongst ourselves. No one fully understands the matter’s internal dimensions or where these claims originated. In what year and how he events that are the subject of the genocide claim began? Prof. Berktay replied that           “Violence reached its peak in 1915 but these were events that had continued since the 1890s. That is to say that the events began much before the 24th and 25th of April 1915, which the Armenians symbolically mark as a national day of mourning. On the 24th and 25th of April the leaders of Armenian organizations in Istanbul were arrested”. As an answer to another question he sais ” In that period 1.75 million Armenians lived in eastern Anatolia. The official decision to expel the Armenians made by the military regime of the triumvirate was organized in a way to include without exception the entire Armenian population of the region. (3)

As a supporter of open dialogue in Turkey regarding the Armenian Genocide and Turkey’s denial, Berktay has received threats in his country.(1)

Turkish Snake-Oil salesman FM is Angry Calls US Senate Panel ‘Inept’

April 12, 2014 By administrator

SYRIA-CRISIS/TURKEYANKARA—Angered at Thursday’s passage of the Armenian Genocide resolution by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the Turkish Foreign Ministry lashed out at the legislative body condemning the adoption of the measure.

“The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee has acted beyond its position, competence and responsibility by adopting by majority vote a hastily and ineptly prepared draft resolution (S.Res.410). We reject this attempt at a political exploitation that distorts history and law, and we condemn those who led this prejudiced initiative, which is devoid of any legal ground,” said an official foreign ministry statement.

“In actuality, how Turks and Armenians, as the owners of this common history, can together, through dialogue and empathy, reach a just memory of the tragic events of 1915, which occurred during the great human sufferings of World War I, is already being examined thoroughly and in all its dimensions. In this context, our proposal to establish a Joint Historical Commission, also reflected in the Turkish-Armenian protocols, remains on the agenda,” added the foreign ministry statement.

“In the forthcoming period, it is essential that the U.S. Congress engages in efforts aimed at strengthening our historic alliance and partnership, which are more important than ever in the present circumstances, instead of damaging Turkish-American bilateral ties; and that this draft resolution and similar ones are not moved any further in the legislative agenda,” the statement concluded.

On Thursday, by a vote of 12 to 5 the Senate Foreign Relations Committee adopted the Armenian Genocide resolution, which urges Turkey to recognize the Genocide.

Prior to Thursday’s vote, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu held a phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday to discuss the resolutions.

“We don’t have a negative expectation [for the outcome of the draft resolution],” Davutoglu told reporters in Ankara Thursday, adding that the two had also discussed developments in Syria and Egypt, reported Hurriyet Daily News.

The Turkish government is taking measures against “initiatives that will bother Turkey. We hope they will not take such an attitude,” he also said.

Turkey urges US Congress ‘not to harm bilateral ties’ over Armenian resolution

April 11, 2014 By administrator

ANKARA / Hürriyet

n_64909_1The Turkish Foreign Ministry has condemned a resolution that recognizes the 1915-16 killings of Ottoman Armenians as a genocide, which passed at the U.S. Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee on April 10 by bipartisan vote.

The ministry warned the U.S. Congress not to “harm bilateral ties” between the two countries by carrying the resolution to the legislative agenda.

“It’s important that the U.S. Congress does not carry this resolution or similar ones to the legislative agenda, but rather makes efforts to reinforce our historical alliance and partnership, which have an importance more than ever in the current conjuncture, instead of harming bilateral relations with non-constructive initiatives,” the ministry’s statement released on April 11 said.

The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee on April 10 passed a resolution describing the killings of Armenians as a genocide, clearing the way for the resolution to be voted on in the Senate.

Ankara said it refuted the “political misuses that warps history and the law,” adding that it “condemned the pioneers of this initiative, which is biased and lacking in legal basis.”

The U.S. Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee “exceeded its authority and responsibility” by passing an “unserious resolution prepared hastily and unskillfully,” the statement also said.

The ministry again cited Turkey’s proposal to establish a joint history committee in order to research the 1915 incidents.
