1909 Adana Massacre, a rebellion that will shake the fate of the Ottoman next year March 31, the same day Vakası’yl started and days during the wave of violence against the Armenians spread around Adana, had left behind huge losses. 106 years ago this massacre began April 13, from Boğaziçi University Department of History Professor Toksöz’l breeze talked to.

What was at the end of the 19th century Cukurova?

Çukurova enrichment live on agriculture coincides with this period. Port of Mersin, is emerging as an important port in the eastern Mediterranean during this period. The construction of the railway at the end of the 1880 Adana-Mersin, Mersin Port is gaining serious attention and becomes almost Beyrut’l the race. Therefore, many expanding trade network. 1905 in Adana is experiencing growth as well as throughout the world. Cotton prices rise with the Port of Mersin, in terms of export volume comes out on top even in Beirut. As well as port and rail foot, the third leg of nomadic peoples, goes quickly become entrenched in this period. State is experiencing as a result of the settlement policy followed since the 1860s. My Upper Plains and around the Ceyhan I also made agricultural production for export. It also put the population migration-related settlement there. Thus Cukurova is growing literally and large farms are starting to be installed. Thus obtained a large income is invested back in the soil. This completely changes the face of the Çukurova.

What is the share of the Armenians in this face change?

Unfortunately not so easy to work with property in Ottoman history. So exactly bilemesek also essential share in the commercial development of the non-Muslims, non-Muslims in the emerging with 1890 as the Armenians. But I’m not talking about an overwhelming majority. Muslims always have in this development. But I can tell the owners of land on a large scale that many of the Armenians in the Ottoman context. But we are talking about a very large geographical area. The presence of Armenians in the Lower Plain and Feke I Haçin more netk that, across the plain, it is not clear enough. In addition to cotton, as well as gardening and the area is well developed in the same period can be said to belong to the majority of Muslims.

II. How are met in Adana changes brought by the Constitutional?

Met to nervously by Muslims. League of Muhammadiyah, an important component in this regard. But I do not want to overstate this anxiety too, because there is no indication that overall we have to be worried about. In 1908, often depicted with enthusiasm in the streets. That it occurred in Adana and Mersin in the city center and only non-Muslims should be noted that this enthusiasm for life. In July 1908, but still up to the period from March 31 Incident, already a troubled period of time. We can say it was the same for Cukurova. Economic terms in 1908, the region does not lead to a big change. Therefore, it is yet too early to talk about a social explosion could bring such a change.

Adana in April of 1909 before have such an ethnic conflict environment can be envisaged?

I tried to take much of the track that, but look ahead to what is written in an environment or can anticipate such carnage seems to be something in the air. But it is not possible to clearly see such a plan. The atmosphere is rising dramatically in 1908 as the city’s article. The revolutionary enthusiasm of the Armenian bothers Muslims. This enthusiasm is interpreted as the Armenians do not trust them too much. In March League of Muhammadiyah’s -31 in March just before the Incident because of the Ittihad-i Muhammadiyah community gathered around the volcano newspaper another name- new establishment in Adana made the meeting on the establishment of branches and provocative out there. This massacre, we need to evaluate more than 1908 in the atmosphere. Even allowing the massacre plan but it is still a few weeks before the April.

Armenian massacres of 1894-96, followed by the Adana Massacres of 1909 and the end of the 1915 Armenian Genocide, we think, we can mention the constantly rising wave of violence against the Armenians?

Looking at this question in terms of violence to say yes. However, the need to separate these, 1909 Adana Massacre, similar to the 1894-96 massacres more. After the Constitutional Revolution in 1908. Although there is the case. Because 1909 is a year where there is still in the throes of revolution. However, when examined in terms of regional characteristics, which of course is divided into 1915.

With Hasan Cemal, journalist and writer, grand-son of Cemal Pacha plannificateurs -one of the genocide-which, after a personal journey, married the Armenian cause and is now working to recognize the genocide. There also Fethiye Cetin, lawyer and human rights which, in adulthood, discovered the Armenian roots that her grandmother had hidden to survive when she was a child. She then led us in his footsteps in the village where the latter spent his childhood in an attempt to reconstruct its history. Sanar Yurdatapan: Turkish Intellectuals Who Have Recognized The Armenian Genocide

April 10, 2015 By administrator

By: Hambersom Aghbashian

Turkish-intelŞanar Yurdatapan was born in Susurluk in Turkey in 1941. He became famous as a composer and song writer during the 1970’s. In addition to his contribution to popular music, Şanar has written music for films and plays. Following the military coup in 1980, he left Turkey and lived in exile in Germany for 12 years. The Turkish Military regime stripped him from his citizenship in 1983. He returned to Turkey in December 1991 and got his citizenship back in 1992 . Şanar has been the spokesperson of the ‘Initiative for Freedom of Expression’, leading a civil disobedience action, since 1995.(1)

“Sari Aghjik”- translated into Turkey into “Sari Gelin” is an Armenian song  which was spread  in Armenian populated Turkish provinces in 19th century. The offspring of Armenian Genocide survivors sing the song in different countries of the world. The structure of the melody, base, and lads are Armenian. The word syllables correspond to the structure of the melody only in the Armenian version, whereas there is a mismatch in the Turkish and Azerbaijani translations. The Turks as usual are trying to wipe off this piece from the Armenian heritage in Turkey by depicting it as a part of  Turkish culture. In 2004 – Turkish composer Şanar Yurdatapan, defending the cultural rights of the Armenians in Turkey said  “The song ‘Sari Gelin,’ which is popular in Turkey, is Armenian.” (2)

According to www.bianet.org ,On Dec.26,2006, A number of leading Turkish intellectuals have launched a new civil disobedience action declaring themselves accomplices of Armenian-Turkish journalist Hrant Dink  whose last prosecution in a series launched by Turkish courts was based on opinions he expressed in an interview with the Reuters news agency. Among those who originally signed the “301 times No! No Limits on Freedom of Thought” campaign, hosted at the website www.301hayir.net, are Prof. Dr. Ali Nesin, Prof. Dr. Gülay Toksöz, Prof. Dr. Kadir Erdin, Prof. Dr. Turgut Tarhanlı, Prof. Dr. Baskın Oran, Doç. Dr. Mithat Sancar, journalist and writer Şeyhmus Diken, journalists Sinan Kara, Adnan Gerger,  Bahattin Arı, authors Nihat Ziyalan and Ayşe Günaysu and musician and free speech activist Şanar Yurdatapan. Many other prominent academics, writers, journalists, and human rights activists have signed onto the campaign.  Hrant Dink was assassinated in Istanbul on January 19, 2007  in front of the offices of Agos newspaper which he founded.  (3)

In response to official statements that the Royal Library of Denmark has agreed “to balance” an Armenian Genocide exhibition by allowing the Turkish government to mount its own “alternative” exhibit, a group of Turkish citizens–including academics, writers, Artists, former MPs , and mayors–have signed an open letter to the Royal Library, asking them them not to Stand Against Turkey’s Democratization and Confrontation with its History! Şanar Yurdatapan was  one of the signatories.(4)

According to “Today’s Zaman”, September 26, 2014, “A group of academics, journalists, artists and intellectuals have released a statement condemning in the harshest terms what they define as expressions that include ‘open hatred and hostility’ towards Armenians in Turkish schoolbooks, which were recently exposed by the newspapers Agos and Taraf. A letter accompanying the text of the condemnation, written by historian Taner Akçam, notes that including such expressions as lesson material to teach children is a disgrace. The statement said ‘The revolutions history and history textbooks should be collected immediately, with an apology issued to everyone and particularly to Armenian students.” The signees said textbooks in schools should seek to encourage feelings of peace, solidarity and living together over inciting hatred towards different religious and cultural groups. Şanar Yurdatapan was one of the many most respected Turkish Human Rights activists who signed it.(5)

According to http://setasarmenian.blogspot.com, under the title “24 April, the anniversary of the 1915s events, will be remembered this year in Turkey, too.”, Taraf Newspaper of 20th April 2010 wrote ” A group of intellectuals as Ali Bayramoğlu, Ferhat Kentel, Neşe Düzel, Perihan Mağden, Sırrı Süreyya Önder, for the first time in Turkey, will commemorate this year on 24 April as the anniversary of the events of 1915, under the leader-ship of “Say Stop!” group. The commemoration will start in front of the tram station in Taksim Square. The group will be dressing in black and carry photos of massacred Armenian intellectuals who were deported from that station.” the following abstracts are from the text of the commemoration activity, “This pain is OUR pain. This mourning is for ALL of US. In 1915, when our population was just 13 million, 1,5 to 2 million Armenians were living in these lands…. In April 24, 1915 it was started “to send them”. We lost them. They are no longer available. They have not even graves. But the “Great Pain” of the “Great Disaster” , with its utmost gravity EXISTS in our pain”. Şanar Yurdatapan, was one of the Turkish intellectuals who signed the text.(6)

2015: Where have we come? Where are we going? #ArmenianGenocide

April 10, 2015 By administrator

Author Lucine Kasbarian

Author Lucine Kasbarian

By Lucine Kasbarian

I don’t think it’s necessary to tell you “Were we have come.” Suffice to say that the “Diaspora Experiment” – to resurrect Armenia in exile following the Genocide —  was not just a success, it was a miracle.

Our parents and grandparents believed that through sincerity, truthfulness and activism, we could educate the world to achieve our dreams of a just resolution to the Armenian Cause. Our survivor elders were genuinely grateful to the First World and other nations who took them in – the United States perhaps being chief among them. But how much did our grandparents really know about America’s and some other countries’ complicity in abandoning the Armenians, even 100 years ago?

What we have learned in this country, through observation and experience, is that, with noted exceptions, our government, mass media, universities and book/film industries often work at cross-purposes with Hai Tahd, seeking to sterilize our cause, keep us down, divide us, diminish us, and wear us down.

We must rely on ourselves and our own assets to retain what we have, and prepare our youth to lead us into the future without being influenced by forces working against us.

Doomsday_Scenario_3_001In 2015 and beyond, our children will not necessarily receive a better Armenian education from universities that have Armenian Studies programs. This is because we Armenians usually have little control or influence over their faculty or curricula.  Our children are not necessarily going to get to tell the Armenian story fully or truthfully by mainstream American newspapers or book publishers. They will be better off supporting and contributing to non-mainstream, alternative, and our own ethnic media and self-published books. The Armenian identity is going to be instilled at home and through our organizations. Both have been salvation for bringing our values to our children, and responsible for bringing the spirit of Armenia to many generations, especially when Armenia was physically inaccessible to our youth.

2015 is a waystation in our long road to liberation and restitution. Acknowledgment of the genocide is not the end.  Are our exiled Diasporan communities equipped and prepared for the long haul?

Armenians in the Diaspora have historically looked to the home country to carry on the culture. From what we’ve seen, the situation in present-day Armenia may be even more perilous than in our Diaspora communities. Oligarchic corruption is strangling Armenia. And there is immense pressure by world powers to neutralize, co-opt or simply get rid of Armenia — which is considered an impediment and even a nuisance to the Great Game they’re playing in the Caucasus and Near East. As a result, the future of our homeland is in jeopardy – including by Pan-Turkism — just as it was 100 years ago.

If something were to happen to Armenia or Artsakh, such catastrophes would put the burden on the Diaspora to perpetuate the culture.  Not long ago, we had rooted Armenian communities of the Middle East where our time-worn traditions were preserved and practiced. These Armenian strong-holds have been weakened and in some cases, destroyed. We can’t afford to assimilate any further. We must stop this erosion. Otherwise, we are committing national suicide.

We Armenians have a saying, “Baikar minchev haghtanag.” It means “Struggle until victory.” However, we are past the point where we could use such a term. We must live by the parallel saying, which is “Baikar minchev verch,” and which means “Struggle until the end.”

This requires even more courage than the first slogan, because it takes a lot of strength to stay on the path in the face of looming defeat, destruction and extinction when you know the prognosis is not good for the survival of Armenia, Artsakh, the hidden or captive Armenians in W. Armenia, or the global Armenian Diaspora.

Our obligation is to continue the struggle – and to go down fighting if we must – in this new battle of Sardarabad.

Today’s battle is, once again, the battle for our existence. To shrink from this battle out of depression or discouragement is to let down our ancestors, our history, our culture, and our faith – all which we love so much.

We must bear the pain when we see the continuation of the Genocide through the deliberate destruction of Der Zor, Kessab, Haleb, Damascus and Mosul. It is not lost on us that after 100 years of genocide perpetrated on the indigenous Christian Armenians, Assyrians and Greeks, powerful forces behind ISIS – the US, Turkey and Israel among them – are today removing all trace of ancient Christianity in the Middle East.

To be an Armenian is a burden and a duty. But it is also a joy. We must accept all of these aspects with the knowledge that perhaps, as the first Christian nation of the world, we were destined to be the earthbound madagh (sacrifice). Perhaps it is our fate to be constantly tested for our faith and endurance precisely because we are a strong, capable and amazing people.

Soon, we will celebrate the resurrection of Christ. Let us remember that Armenia, too, was crucified and later resurrected. We have struggled for rebirth many times and succeeded. We may succeed still. But even if we don’t, we must remain strong at a time when our adversaries would like to see us crumble.

Our adversaries have made a high art of finding Armenians who are seeking career advancement and fame at any cost and who are willing to work against or compromise our Cause, if necessary, to get it. Much of the “Western establishment” uses such people as conduits to deliver damning messages to us; to make us doubt ourselves and our own history; to tell us that our goals are unreasonable or impossible; to poison and further traumatize us; and to discourage us.

We must be cautious about who we invite into our circles to influence our children. To this end, I insist that you read a book before you invite that books’ author to speak to your community. Study the curriculum of an academician before you invite a scholar to speak to your community. Understand the intentions behind the so-called “reconciliation” movement and who benefits from it.

To quote from the book, “To Kill A Mockingbird,” “Real courage is when you fight for what is right regardless of whether you win or lose.”

So today, we must say – in the face of all that our people suffered and endured, and have yet to still suffer and endure – Baikar, baikar minchev verch.

Kardashian with the power of 77 Million followers Put Turkish Crime Against Humanity world media spotlight

April 10, 2015 By administrator

600x400xKim-Kardashyan-Garni-geghard.jpg.pagespeed.ic.T-gneDpjTPTop Armenian American socialite Kim Kardashian’s visit to Armenia has become one of the most debated events among online chattering classes and beyond, leaving practically no one indifferent.

Kardashian, a 34-year-old U.S. television star with worldwide recognition, arrived in her historical homeland on Wednesday evening along with her husband Kanye West, daughter North, and sister Khloe.

The visit of the renowned family has also put Armenia into an international media spotlight, with the world’s leading media like The Daily Mail, The Guardian, USA TODAY, the Turkish Hurriyet, and others covering Kardashian’s landmark trip that coincides with the time when Armenians prepare to commemorate the centennial of the genocide committed in Ottoman Turkey.

Almost everyone in Armenia is now talking about the Kardashians’ visit and social media are abuzz with comments on this subject. Various opinions can be heard about the star of Armenian origin from both public figures and ordinary citizens.

Politicians have also commented on the Kardashian family’s trip to Armenia. Parliament Speaker Galust Sahakyan appreciated her coming, saying that the entire world’s attention is directed to Armenia due to this circumstance.

“Kim Kardashian is a world famous lady, and we should be proud to see the world’s attention focused on Armenia. We like to gossip even about the best things. She is very popular and we should host her decently,” the top Armenian legislator said.

Levon Martirosyan, a lawmaker representing the faction of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), told media that the TV star’s visit should be used for the promotion of the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

“This is a very good means. She has 77 million followers on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and other social media, at least 77 million people listen to each of her words. That should certainly be used for Armenia’s promotion, for promoting its tourist potential and for making the voice of our people once again audible,” he said.

Shushan Petrosyan, a singer and lawmaker representing the RPA faction, also said that it is necessary to use the occasion to promote Armenia’s interests.

“It’s very important to work on our side and give a right direction to her based on historical events. I don’t think she is interested in all this, but the information should be provided correctly,” she said.

Kim Kardashian and her sister Khloe, accompanied by media, yesterday took a stroll around Yerevan, visiting, in particular, Victory Park. After that they were received by Armenian Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan. And later in the day the Kardashians went to visit some historical and cultural places outside Yerevan – in Garni and Geghard.

In Armenia the U.S. celebrity sisters are shooting a one-hour episode of their TV show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

While in Armenia they are also expected to visit the Armenian Genocide Memorial at Tsitsernakaberd and travel to the country’s second largest city of Gyumri to meet some distant relatives.

Iranian-Armenian Students Urge Rouhani to Recognize Genocide

April 10, 2015 By administrator

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani

TEHRAN—Iranian-Armenian students have appealed to Iran’s president Hassan Rouhani with an open letter urging his government to recognize the Armenian Genocide.

The authors of the letter have drawn Iran’s President’s attention to the unconstructive policy of Turkey in the region, noting that today Turkey does not only deny the Genocide committed against around 1.5 million Armenians in the Ottoman Empire, but also sponsors the terrorist groups in the region which slaughter numerous innocent civilians in Syria and Iraq.

Highlighting the peaceful coexistence of various ethnic and religious minorities in Iran, the Iranian-Armenian students are calling on Rouhani to recognize the Armenian Genocide, in a step to help prevent such atrocities in the future.

Despite their serious disagreements concerning regional issues, Iran and Turkey maintain economic relations.

As a Muslim country, Iran has been conducting a moderate and cautious policy regarding the Armenian Genocide over the last years. Remarkably, however, the members of parliament of the 6th Majlis of Iran condemned the Armenian Genocide. Seyyed Mohammad Khatami, then President of Iran, visited Tsitsernakaberd during his official visit to Yerevan on September 9, 2004. Vice president of Iran, Hamid Baghaei, used the word “genocide” during a conference in August 2010. “The government of Ottoman Turkey committed genocide in 1915,” he said. However, the statement was refuted to prevent aggravating relations with Turkey.

The former Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, avoided going to Tsitsernakaberd during his official visit to Armenia in 2007.

The recent years have seen some changes in the position of official Tehran regarding the Armenian Genocide. The Armenian community of Iran has recently been allowed to hold a number of events without facing substantial obstacles, including protests in front of the Turkish Embassy in Iran in the past two years.

However, both the political and religious elite of Iran, as well as ordinary citizens, admit the fact of the Armenian Genocide, as, according to Iranian sources, the Ottoman Turks also slaughtered many Armenians in Iran’s Urmia region in 1918.

Turkish lawyers apologize to Armenians for Genocide

April 9, 2015 By administrator

f55267c31ef7fe_55267c31ef835.thumbA scheduled conference devoted to the denial of the Armenian Genocide has angered several Turkish lawyers from Izmir.

The local branch of the Association of Modern Lawyers has issued a statement, apologizing to the Armenians.

The association says that an alliance of lawyers responsible for establishing justice in Turkey is sure that what happened in the Ottoman Empire in the World War II era was a crime of Genocide committed under the  pretext of displacement.

The authors of the statement noted that among the Armenians arrested and exiled to death on April 24, 1915, there were also lawyers and advocates.

“We, as lawyers from Izmir, will not allow that the crimes and the genocide committed against the Armenians be consigned to oblivion. We apologize to the Armenian people on behalf of the organization we are members of,” reads the statement.
