Canada: Multiple shots inside parliament, manhunt in area (Video)

canada-parlament-shotingOTTAWA – A manhunt is on for armed assailants after several rounds of gunfire tore through Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Canada and other city locations. Local police stations and military bases nationwide are on lockdown as police attempt to locate the culprits.
Three separate incidents began with the shooting of a soldier at a war memorial. The assailants apparently wreaked havoc at other city locations – including the main government building. Police confirmed one on Parliament Hill, one at the war memorial, and one near a local shopping mall. “So I’m locked down in Center Block on Parliament Hill after at least one shooter burst in and opened fire,” local reporter Josh Wingrove stated. “I heard dozens of gunshots and the smell of gunpowder is heavy in the hallways right now.” Wingrove also reported seeing a motionless body inside the parliament building,

which he could not confirm to be either dead or alive. Some 30 shots were fired inside the building, an eyewitness told Reuters. The gunman was subsequently chased by police into the center block of the building. Prime Minister Stephen Harper managed to exit the building safely. Canadian Armed Forces bases across the country are in lockdown and all Ottawa Police stations are currently closed to the public as gunmen remain at large.
There are reports that more than one assailant is active in the area. “There are multiple assailants,” police reportedly told local columnist John Invision, adding “move back, they’re targeting first responders.” Ottawa Police Constable Marc Soucy told Reuters that they “are actively looking for suspects right now, so we don’t know if it is suspect one or suspects plural”. One shooter has been confirmed dead, according to senior CBC news reporter Aaron Saltzman.

Ottowa police have confirmed that two or three gunmen were involved in the incident. Associated Press Television News journalist Jorge Barrera reported that police are in possession of a photograph of the gunman, who reportedly has dark skin and long black hair. Barrera also tweeted that police have the suspect’s cellphone. There are reports that more than one assailant is active in the area. “There are multiple assailants,” police reportedly told local columnist John Invision, adding “move back, they’re targeting first responders.”

Viral video shows Erdoğan’s insults against Gülen movement

192221_newsdetailA new video published on YouTube that has gone viral over the social media shows a compilation of insults and phrases that are tantamount to hate speech uttered by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The video was prepared by sonvesayet.com, meaning the final tutelage, referring to the rule of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party), and published online this week. The video is composed of some dozens of insults by Erdoğan in fast-track, targeting a movement inspired by Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen. Most of the speeches in the video are made after Dec. 17 corruption scandal, which he dismissed as a plot to unseat him and blamed on alleged followers of Gülen in the bureaucracy. He went on insulting rampage after the corruption scandal, calling followers of the Gülen movement, also known as the Hizmet movement, as leeches, blood-sucking vampires and parasites.

100s of Yazidis convert to Islam under threat of death (Video)

Yazidi-conversionMilitant group the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), which witnesses and officials say has executed hundreds of members of Iraq’s Yazidis, has released a video that seeks to show it enlightened hundreds of members of the religious minority by converting them to Islam.

The production was issued not long after the group, which later renamed itself as the Islamic State (IS), released a video showing one of its black-clad fighters beheading American journalist James Foley, sparking international outrage.

The Yazidis, followers of an ancient religion derived from Zoroastrianism who are part of the country’s Kurdish minority, have paid the highest price for ISIL’s dramatic advance through northern Iraq.

ISIL militants, widely seen as more hardline than al-Qaeda, storm into villages armed with machine guns and give Yazidis a simple choice: convert to Islam or die.

Witnesses have said most of their hundreds of victims were shot dead at close range, while others including women and children were buried alive. Women who avoided death were rounded up and taken away as slaves, witnesses said. The threat to the Yazidis was one reason cited by US President Barack Obama when he launched US air strikes against ISIL in parts of Iraq earlier this month.

Armenian genocide:
In April 1915 the Ottoman government embarked upon the systematic decimation of its civilian Armenian population. The persecutions continued with varying intensity until 1923 when the Ottoman Empire ceased to exist and was replaced by the Republic of Turkey. The Armenian population of the Ottoman state was reported at about two million in 1915. An estimated one million had perished by 1918, while hundreds of thousands had become homeless and stateless refugees. By 1923 virtually the entire Armenian population of Anatolian Turkey had disappeared.

The Ottoman Empire was ruled by the Turks who had conquered lands extending across West Asia, North Africa and Southeast Europe. The Ottoman government was centered in Istanbul (Constantinople) and was headed by a sultan who was vested with absolute power. The Turks practiced Islam and were a martial people. The Armenians, a Christian minority, lived as second class citizens subject to legal restrictions which denied them normal safeguards. Neither their lives nor their properties were guaranteed security. As non-Muslims they were also obligated to pay discriminatory taxes and denied participation in government. Scattered across the empire, the status of the Armenians was further complicated by the fact that the territory of historic Armenia was divided between the Ottomans and the Russians.
