Kanal 24, a Turkish pro-government TV, has aired a new video where Ogün Samast, who was detained several days after murdering Istanbul Armenian journalist Hrant Dink in 2007, is seen being photographed with several police officers.

While being photographed with Samast, one policeman said: “Bravo, my lion! Pose well [for the camera]. Smile when being photographed.”

In the video, Ogün Samast is seen watching the moment when he murdered Dink. Subsequently, he said he waited for Dink two or three days, and when he saw him, he took out his gun and shot him.

Some of the police officers in this video have been arrested within the framework of the recent coup attempt in Turkey.

Hrant Dink was the founder and chief editor of Agos Armenian bilingual weekly of Istanbul. He was gunned down on January 19, 2007 in front of Agos’ then office in Istanbul.

In newly-published footage released by Channel 24, Dink murder convict Ogün Samast is seen with a group of police officers in the police station in the northern province of Samsun, where he was brought to be interrogated. During their conversation police officers are seen sitting next to Samast and asking him about the details of the act, while some others are taking photos of him, instructing him to “smile.”

The same officer who questioned Samast can be seen in the images later praising him for his act before assuring him that the images “would never be released” and that he could talk freely.

In another image, Samast can be seen posing with a Turkish flag.

In his statements, Samast, while watching surveillance camera footage of his act, is heard talking about how he conducted the murder.

“I followed him for two or three days. I took out my gun and shot him. I went and waited in front of his door; I came and shot [him],” said Samast.

On Sept. 7, footage was published by a Turkish broadcaster appearing to show that six former gendarmerie intelligence officers, who are currently being tried over links to the Fethullahist Terror Organization (FETÖ), were complicit in the 2007 assassination of Dink. In the images published by A Haber, they can be seen near the scene at the time of Dink’s murder.

Dink, 52, was shot dead with two bullets to the head in broad daylight outside the offices of Agos in central Istanbul.

Samast, then a 17-year-old jobless high-school dropout, confessed to the murder and was sentenced to almost 23 years in jail in 2011.

But the case grew into a wider scandal after it emerged that security forces had been aware of a plot to kill Dink but failed to act.

Relatives and followers of the case have long claimed government officials, police, military personnel and members of Turkey’s National Intelligence Agency (MİT) played a role in Dink’s murder by neglecting their duty to protect the journalist.

Turkey’s top court in July 2014 ruled that the investigation into the killing had been flawed, paving the way for the trial of the police officials.

In January 2016, Supreme Court of Appeals ruled to tie the main case into Dink’s murder and prosecution into the public officers’ negligence to prevent the killing of Dink. Indictments for 26 people are now included in the merged case.

Turkey coup: What is Gulen movement and what does it want?

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan blames US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen for last week’s bloody attempted coup.

Suspected Gulenists are now being purged in their thousands in a wave of arrests and sackings and Mr Erdogan has declared a state of emergency.

But what do we know about the movement, and what does it want?

Gulenists incessantly advertise Bill Clinton’s speech at the Third Annual Friendship Dinner organized by the Turkish Cultural Center of New York (a Gulenist organization) at the Waldorf Astoria on September 25, 2008.  The video of Clinton’s brief speech has been publicized on the internet by several Gulenist organizations,

and has become one of the Gulenists’ favorite defense weapons.  Whenever anything critical of the Gulen Movement or Gulen charter schools has appeared in the press, Gulenists have touted this speech as a full-fledged endorsement that they insist must instantly dispel any doubts ever raised about Fethullah Gulen and his followers.  The weight that Gulenists put on this speech seems quite out of proportion to its actual content; Clinton mentions Gulen only once in the entire speech, and never praises him directly.

Texas: Turkish Imam Gülen-led charter schools in Texas accused of defrauding $18 million “VIDEO”

A chain of Turkish Imam Gülen  Texas charter schools linked to the movement of U.S.-based Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen has been accused of fraud and financial malfeasance worth over $18 million.

Amsterdam & Partners, a law firm investigating the movement’s activities, has filed a fraud complaint with the Texas Education Agency, the firm said in a statement late on July 11.

The complaint accused the public-funded school chain and another company, disguised as independent but in fact linked to Harmony Public Schools, of a complicated shell game in which Harmony seemed to contract the other company, but for the purposes of misappropriating funds rather than performing any actual services.        
Ankara has pressed the U.S. to extradite Gülen to stand trial for alleged crimes committed in Turkey.  

According to the website of the law firm’s founding partner Robert Amsterdam, Gülen “controls some 150 U.S. charter schools through opaque fronts… Gülen-affiliated Harmony Public Schools has been found to be allegedly engaging [in] widespread abuse of the H1B visa program, misappropriation of public funds and discrimination against certain students and families.”

According to the complaint, Harmony – which is financed by over $250 million in U.S. federal and state tax money annually – contracted a firm called Charter School Solutions (CSS) for $44 million to manage its buildings and properties.  

     

But the complaint alleges that CSS, far from being an independent company, was actually managed by a Harmony employee.

“For the purpose of new buildings to be rented by Harmony schools, an additional $18.4 million was paid to CSS,” said the law firm’s statement, which called the financial malfeasance “shocking.”

Amsterdam & Partners filed a formal complaint in late May against Harmony urging the Texas Education Agency to conduct a full investigation based on documented abuses suggesting a widespread pattern of fraud, discrimination and abuse in the Harmony network.

According to the law firm, Harmony operated seven charter school districts serving 46 charter campuses in Texas and had links to the “Hizmet movement,” led by Gülen, who was also believed to be responsible for forming a “parallel state” in Turkey.
