France-24 TV channel interviews Karabakh Foreign Minister

June 15, 2013 By administrator

14, 2013 – 20:58 AMT

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic Karen Mirzoyan, who was on a visit to France from June 10 to 12, gave an interview to France-24 TV channel.

The NKR Foreign Minister answered a range of questions related to the history of the Karabakh conflict, its current stage and prospects of settlement, humanitarian issues, 162331the economic situation in Artsakh, etc.

Introducing the history of the conflict between Azerbaijan and Nagorno Karabakh, Karen Mirzoyan noted that the movement of 1988 had been a struggle not only for reunification with Armenia, but also for human rights, social and economic equality and a secure life. However, as the Minister noted, the peaceful rallies of the youth, students and workers were responded by Azerbaijan with massacres of Armenians in Sumgait, Baku, Kirovabad, and other Azerbaijani towns, which were followed by aggression against Nagorno Karabakh.

“Azerbaijan must, first of all, change its stance and stop constant promotion xenophobia and hatred against everything Armenian”, Karen Mirzoyan said.

He emphasized that the conflict could not be resolved by force, as a war would have disastrous consequences for the entire region.

The NKR Foreign Minister also dwelt on the economic situation in Artsakh, the achievements and prospects of development of the priority spheres.

Touching upon humanitarian issues, Minister Mirzoyan focused on the problem of the Armenian refugees living in Artsakh, who, unlike the Azerbaijani ones, are deprived of international assistance.

Karen Mirzoyan expressed confidence that sooner or later peaceful settlement of the conflict would be reached, which would ensure the safe development and prosperity of the two independent states – Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan.

According to the Foreign Minister, the final settlement of the conflict with Azerbaijan is possible only under the full involvement of the NKR in the negotiations, NKR Foreign Ministry press service reported.

YEREVAN. 158132– Three candidates will be engaged in main struggle in Iran’s presidential vote, Armenian MP of the Iranian parliament Karen Khanlarian told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

According to him, the general atmosphere in the presidential elections in Iran is calm, and the voter turnout is high.

“The second round is expected, but now it is too early to speak about it. People are usually more active in the last hours of the elections,” he said, emphasizing that it is a little difficult to forecast the outcome of elections.

Karen Khanlarian believes that the main candidates are the current mayor of Tehran Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Hassan Rouhani and top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili.

Iran is holding presidential elections on June 14. Iranians are choosing from six candidates.

Greek Workers Strike to Protest Shutdown of State Broadcaster

June 14, 2013 By administrator

ATHENS — Thousands of Greeks walked off the job on Thursday in the third general strike of the year, this time called by labor unions to protest a surprise decision by the conservative-led government to close the state broadcaster and put about 2,900 employees out of work.

StrikeThe nationwide walkout shut down tax offices, left hospitals on emergency staffing and disrupted travel. Ferries remained moored in ports and trains at depots, and long delays were expected on international flights. Public transit was also affected, though workers were running a reduced service to allow Greeks to join a protest rally.

Instead of gathering outside Parliament in central Athens, as they have done for anti-austerity protests since 2010, demonstrators met on Thursday outside the headquarters of the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation northeast of Athens. Former employees and supporters have gathered there since Tuesday night, when the authorities pulled the broadcaster off the air.

Private television channels continued a news blackout begun on Wednesday, and newspaper employees walked off the job, leaving many Greeks to turn to blogs and social networks for news updates. Some dismissed employees of the closed state broadcaster, known as ERT for its initials in Greek, continued to produce news programs that were distributed through satellite channels.

Though ERT was often criticized for overspending and for lacking independence, it was widely valued in Greece for its in-depth news coverage, documentaries and cultural programs. The government has said it will set up a leaner replacement company, probably over the summer; until then, Greek viewers are left with six privately owned national channels and a host of local stations whose offerings vary widely in quality and whose news coverage is assumed to be influenced by the views of their owners. The national channels typically offer an assortment of news, talk shows, cooking programs and films.

The country’s two main labor unions represent about 2.5 million workers and have historically been very powerful, though their influence has waned somewhat as many Greeks have been worn down by three years of job losses and wage and pension cuts. The unions condemned “unprecedented and provocative” initiatives by the authorities, including the shutdown of ERT.

The civil servants’ union, known as Adedy, accused the government of “methodically and autocratically annihilating the rights of workers and citizens, one by one, for a long time now,” and said that the government’s only aim was to satisfy the demands of Greece’s three main foreign lenders: the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund.

Envoys from the lenders, known collectively as the troika, did not comment on the ERT shutdown. On Wednesday, the European economic and monetary affairs commissioner, Olli Rehn, said there had been no pressure from Brussels for Athens to close its state broadcaster.

“The commission has not sought the closure of ERT, but nor does the commission question the Greek government’s mandate to manage the public sector in Greece,” Mr. Rehn said.

In an address to a business conference on Wednesday night, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras criticized the labor unions for “striking every time something significant and positive happens.” He described ERT as “sinful” and “an emblem of lack of transparency and waste,” said the new state broadcaster would be based on “the most modern international prototypes,” and dismissed the protests as “the final spasms of a status quo of privileges, which is collapsing.”

The two junior political parties in the governing coalition led by Mr. Samaras’s New Democracy party have also objected to to the closing of ERT and have demanded talks with the prime minister on the issue. Officials of the two parties, Pasok and the Democratic Left, have said they were seeking a compromise and do not want to pull out of the coalition.

The leader of the main opposition party, Syriza, accused the two junior coalition parties of pretending to condemn the closing of ERT while continuing to back Mr. Samaras because “they are even more afraid of early elections than New Democracy.”

The government spokesman, Simos Kedikoglou, said on Thursday that he believed the three governing parties would reach a deal when Parliament debates the creation of a successor to ERT, to be called New Hellenic Radio, Internet and Television, or Nerit.

Turkey: Police use tear gas again to quell protests Ankara, five detained

June 14, 2013 By administrator

Demonstrations in Ankara were once again subject to a heavy police intervention in the early hours of June 14, as a critical meeting between Prime Minister Recep Tayyip n_48798_4Erdoğan and a second delegation comprising representatives of the Gezi Park protesters was under way.

The police used tear gas and water cannons against a group of 200 demonstrators blocking traffic at the Kennedy Avenue, near the Embassy of the United States. Protesters that scattered in side-streets were also chased by the police. Five people have reportedly been taken into custody.

The protests in Ankara were less crowded due to heavy rain in the Turkish capital. Police had intervened in the same area during the three previous days.

Turkey: Mothers of protesters join demos by forming human chain in Gezi Park

June 14, 2013 By administrator

ISTANBUL

Istanbul Governor Hüseyin Avni Mutlu today called on the mothers of the Gezi Park protesters to “bring their children home.” However, instead of following the governor’s n_48791_4order, many mothers joined their children at the demonstration, marking the latest instance of protesters turning the authorities’ statements on their head.

Dozens of mothers held hands and formed a large human chain to show their support to the protests, which have entered their 17th day, by standing guard around the park.

Earlier, Mutlu had said that no police intervention was foreseen in the next 24 hours, despite reports that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had instructed otherwise. Mutlu also gave his own cell phone number during a broadcast by the private NTV channel, calling on the young people at Gezi Park not to hesitate giving him a ring. He also said that he intended to visit the park soon.

Turkey: Twitter under microscope amid ‘Gezi Park probe’

June 14, 2013 By administrator

Oya Armutçu / Esra KayaISTANBUL – Hürriyet

Twitter should found a firm compliant with Turkish law, officials say, but Twitter has refused to share the data of its users detained related to the Gezi protests

n_48750_4The Transport Ministry has brought the legal basis of Twitter under the microscope, claiming that it causes information sharing and tax problems. The moves come amid detentions of Twitter users within the framework of the Gezi Park investigation, which has been criticized as “unlawful.”

“Twitter doesn’t have a legal basis in Turkey. They take ads but they do not pay tax in Turkey. It should establish a company compliant with the Turkish Commercial Code, like Facebook and YouTube,” the ministry officials told daily Hürriyet.

Protestors are being held in custody for “inciting riots and conducting propaganda” on Twitter, and these custodies have been criticized as being contrary to the law. Amid these disputes, the ministry has indicated it is likely to examine Twitter’s activities in Turkey more closely.

Twitter rejects sharing information

The Turkish judicial authorities’ previous requests of foreign service providers like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube “to share content and access information” was earlier rejected because the code on the protection of personal data does not exist in Turkish law.

However, the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office’s sources said a “Twitter investigation” is still continuing, stating that prosecutors are collecting evidence via displays on television and police cameras, as well as pictures in newspapers.

“Turkey signed the cybercrime agreement. However, foreign servers like Twitter and Facebook don’t give content and access information requested by prosecutors. Their reason is that there is no law for the protection of personal information in Turkey,” said Hakan Kızılarslan, an academic at Ankara’s Ufuk University. Kızılarslan said Turkey had not enacted this law since 1996, adding that it was currently waiting in Parliament.

He stated that the prosecutors’ requests to access content and information sharing within the framework of the Gezi Park investigation would be rejected by Twitter because “Turkey doesn’t have legal safeguards.”

The officials from the Transport Ministry said Twitter did not have a legal basis in the country, adding that the social network has to found a company according to Turkish Commercial Code. They noted that Facebook and YouTube used to be in the same situation but had since established companies in line with the code and now had a legal basis.

Iranians vote for new president today

June 14, 2013 By administrator

Millions of voters across Iran have begun casting their ballots in the country’s presidential elections.

|Although all six candidates are seen as conservatives, one of them, cleric Hassan Rowhani, has been reaching out to the reformists in recent days, BBC News reported.
g_image-VoteThe election will decide a successor to outgoing leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

His eight years in power have been characterised by economic turmoil and Western sanctions against Iran over its controversial nuclear programme.
Polls across Iran opened at 08:00 local time (03:30 GMT) and are due to close at 18:00 (13:30 GMT). Some 50m people are eligible to cast their ballots.
Mr Rowhani has been attracting increasing attention, speaking publicly about the need to re-engage with the West, our correspondent says.
The surge of support for him came after Mohammad Reza Aref, the only reformist candidate in the race, announced on Tuesday that he was withdrawing his candidature on the advice of the pro-reform ex-President Mohammad Khatami.

Mr Rowhani now has the endorsement of two ex-presidents, Mr Khatami and Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, who was disqualified from
the race by the powerful Guardian Council.
However, Rowhani faces a tough challenge from hardline candidates, including top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili and Tehran’s mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf.
The remaining candidates are conservatives close to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei.

Ahead of the election, he called on all Iranians to vote.
“Whoever is elected, if he enjoys a strong and overwhelming vote, he will be able to stand up against enemies and aggressors more properly,” Ayatollah Khamenei’s website quoted him as saying.

Friday’s election is the first since 2009, when protesters took to the streets in anger at the results which they said had been rigged in favour of Mr Ahmadinejad.

ECtHR receives complaint from Armenian party on Safarov case

June 14, 2013 By administrator

June 13, 2013 | 16:44

YEREVAN. – The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has received a complaint from Hayk Makuchyan and the legal successors of Gurgen Margaryan.
157947Makuchyan, who miraculously had survived death in Budapest and whom the Hungarian court had declared injured party, confirmed this information to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

To note, the matter of complaint refers to the receipt of documents.

The Armenian party had applied to ECtHR in February, in connection with the Ramil Safarov case. The complaint is with respect to Articles 2 and 14 of the European Convention on Human Rights. Armenian and foreign specialists are included in the working group that is preparing the complaint.

Armenian News-NEWS.am reported earlier that Ramil Safarov, a then-lieutenant in the Azerbaijani military, was extradited on August 31, 2012 from Hungary, where he was serving a life sentence—and with no expression of either regret or remorse—for the premeditated axe murder of Armenian lieutenant Gurgen Margaryan, in his sleep, during a NATO Partnership for Peace program in Budapest back in 2004. Safarov had planned on killing the other Armenian military serviceman, who likewise was attending the aforesaid program, but he was unable to carry out this plan.

Ramil Safarov’s return to Baku was welcomed, as was his act of murder, by the officials of president Ilham Aliyev’s government and much of Azerbaijani society, and the Azerbaijani president immediately granted him a pardon, he was declared a national hero, promoted to a higher military rank, and was allocated housing and pension.

And Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan announced on August 31, 2012 that Armenia is suspending its diplomatic ties with Hungary. Also, Sargsyan instructed the Ministry of Justice to take all measures to petition to the international judicial tribunals, and with respect to the Safarov case.

Ramil Safarov’s pardoning was condemned by virtually all international organizations.

Also, a group of Hungarian intellectuals visited Armenia last year—and in connection with this incident—to announce that they are ashamed of the action that was taken by the Hungarian authorities
