Remembering Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsyan
If not the tremendous losses suffered in the October 27, 1999 parliament attack, Armenia would be a totally different country now, says an opposition lawmaker.
“The negative aftermaths of October 27 are felt to date; they aren’t completely overcome,” Stepan Demirchyan (Armenian National Congress) told reporters on Thursday, describing the tragedy as a major blow to the Armenian statehood.
Asked whether the terrorist plot is likely to be ever resolved, Demirchyan said he is skeptical about such a scenario. In his words, the authors “did all their best to cover up the crime”.
“Yes, we can state that there was never a desire to resolve it,” he added.
Stepan Demirchyan is the son of Karen Demirchyan, the National Assembly’s speaker who was shot dead along with Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsyan and other parliamentarian on the tragic day.
