Turkish news agency says Egyptian forces detain journalist, seize equipment

August 20, 2013 By administrator

By The Associated Press

ANKARA, Turkey – Egyptian security forces on Tuesday detained a Sudanese journalist working for a Turkish news agency and seized its cameras and other equipment, an agency official said.

The Ihlas news agency said its Cairo bureau chief, Tahir Osman Hamde, was detained at a hotel room overlooking Cairo’s Tahrir Square, which he and other agency journalist use as an office.

Muharrem Serhen, Ihlas’ foreign desk chief, told The Associated Press that Hamde was taken away, despite “having the necessary permits.” Other Ihlas journalists were not detained.

Serhen said the Turkish Embassy was in contact with Egyptian officials to try to secure his release.

He is the second journalist working for Turkish media to be detained amid growing tensions between Turkey and Egypt. Turkey has strongly criticized Egypt’s military-backed government since the July 3 ouster of President Mohammed Morsi.

Metin Turan, a correspondent with Turkey’s state-run TRT television and radio, was detained Saturday after police stormed a mosque in Cairo and swept up hundreds of supporters of the country’s ousted president who had sought refuge there.

Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency said Egyptian prosecutors have ordered that Turan be kept in custody for a further 15 days but that the Turkish Embassy has contested the decision and his case could be reviewed on Tuesday.
