Pope thanks people of Armenia for welcoming him

pope thans armeniaPope Francis thanked the President of Armenia and the Catholicos Karekin II, the Partriarch, the Catholic bishops and the people of Armenia for welcoming him as a pilgrim in fraternity and peace.

At a special Jubilee audience at St Peter’s Square in Rome, Pope reflected on his recent visit to Armenia, Vatican Radio reported.

“This past weekend I made a Pastoral Visit to Armenia, the first nation to embrace the Christian faith and a people which has remained faithful even in the midst of great trials,” the pontiff said.

Pope added that he would go to Georgia and Azerbaijan where he will “support every effort to encourage peace and reconciliation in a spirit of respect for all.”

“With gratitude for the welcome and fellowship showed me by the Armenian Apostolic Church, I ask the Virgin Mary to strengthen Christians everywhere to remain firm in the faith and to work for a society of ever greater justice and peace.”

Armenia President thanks German President, Chancellor and Bundestag President

sargiyan and merkel 400YEREVAN. – President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan sent letters of thanks to the President of Federal Republic of Germany Joachim Gauck, Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel and Bundestag President Norbert Lammert on occasion of the adoption of the resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide.

The President expressed gratitude to them, as well as all the political and public forces of Germany which had their final word in this issue. Sargsyan expressed conviction that the resolution will play its unique role in the recognition and prevention of genocides.

“The recognition of the Armenian Genocide by German’s Bundestag was indeed a historic step not only for Armenia and Armenian people, Germany and German people, but also  the entire civilized world. It symbolizes democracy and supremacy of universal values, stressing the consistent role of Germany in maintaining those values. It is a message to the entire world on that the 100-year-old crimes are not only not forgotten, but also condemned and with accurate description,” the President’s letter reads.

Congressman Adam Schiff thanked Pope Francis for using “g-word” during the Holy Mass at the Vatican.

“Pontifex Thank you for acknowledging #ArmenianGenocide as first genocide of 20th Century. May your words inspire truth in others,” Schiff tweeted.

The first Genocide of the twentieth century was perpetrated against Armenians, Pope Francis said during a Mass in the Armenian Catholic rite in St. Peter’s Basilica to mark 100 years since the Armenian Genocide.
