Sayat Nova Festival to bring together Armenian, Georgian musicians

sayat novaSayat Nova Festival 2017 will launch on June 16 in Tbilisi and will end on June 18 in Yerevan, Armenia. The annual festival, organized by Music of Armenia, will bring together the musicians of the two neighboring countries.

Sayat Nova Festival organizer Hasmik Movsisyan said at a press conference on Monday that Armenian and Georgian musicians will hold a concert at Tbilisi’s St. George Cathedral on June 16. She also added that Jnar Ensemble is set to hold a concert at Yerevan’s Silk Road Hotel on June 17, with Sayat Nova Ensemble closing the festival on June 18.

Sayat Nova Festival is an annual festival aimed at reviving and promoting the legacy of Sayat Nova’s music and ashough culture in general.

Senior Consultant at the Georgian Embassy in Armenia Nino Aptsiauri, present at the conference, highlighted the joint celebration of the festival dedicated to prominent ashik Sayat-Nova.

“Sayat-Nova belongs not only to the Armenian, but also to the Georgian people, since he is a great musician and poet with a regional wisdom. Sayat-Nova is the founder of the ashik poetry and his works are taught at higher educational institutions in Georgia,” she added.

Boston’s Sayat Nova Dance Company to Perform in 90th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

The 2016 Parade will mark the first appearance by the group. Sayat Nova Dance Company will have the opportunity to showcase their exciting talents alongside iconic Parade staples, including giant character balloons, floats, marching bands, celebrities and clowns.

Each year, the Macy’s Parade creative team looks for performance groups across the country that have the talent and abilities to captivate more than 3.5 million live spectators and more than 50 million viewers. From the wacky to the outrageous, these groups offer unique performances that add a dose of local color to the national event.

The Sayat Nova Dance Company of Boston is the leading Armenian dance company of North America. Founded in 1986 by director/choreographer Apo Ashjian, Sayat Nova is a non-profit organization that relies solely on the commitment and dedication of its supporters. Over the past 30 years, the company has had approximately 500 volunteer members contribute to their mission, which is to preserve and promote the Armenian culture through dance. Inspired by a love for their heritage and for dancing, members of the Company are enthusiastic and devoted individuals. Music of Sayat Nova Brought to Georgia’s Akhaltsikhe District

AKHALTSIKHE (ARMENPRESS)—The Sayat-Nova State Minstrel Song Ensemble has organized concerts in the Armenian villages of the Akhaltsikhe district of Georgia, representing and spreading Armenian culture and music among Georgia’s Armenian community.

Speaking to Armenpress, the Georgian Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church said that the first concert took place at the historical fortress of Akhaltsikhe’s Rabat district. The works of Sayat Nova and other Armenian folk musicians were heard at the concert, which was attended by the mayor of Akhaltsikhe, Giorgi Kopadze.

The Sayat-Nova State Minstrel Song Ensemble was established in 1927 by singer and musician Shara Talian. Between 1942 and 1972, the Ensemble was directed by Vagharshak Sahakian, before it ceased its activities during a twenty year lull. The Ensemble reestablished itself under the leadership of Tovmas Poghosian in 1972, and still performs today both in Armenia and in the Diaspora.

The Ensemble’s orchestra is directed by composer Artem Khachatur. It features both singers and a wide range of traditional instruments, including the tar, saz, santour, dap, kamancha, kamani, and tav kamani.

The repertoire of the Ensemble consists of more than 300 Armenian minstrel songs from the past and present.

The Ensemble recently widened its repertoire to include 24 compositions of Armenian folk musicians from the Peri province of Iran. A majority of these songs were previously unknown.

Nearly each and every one of minstrel Sayat Nova’s works-31 in total-were likewise

31 of the Ensemble’s songs have been recorded and released in two albums, “National Patriotic Songs of Armenian Minstrels” and “Songs of Armenian Minstrels of Peri”.

The Sayat-Nova Ensemble has performed throughout Armenia and the Diaspora, including in Russia, Georgia, Iran, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Sayat Nova’s works to be published in Turkey

For the first time, works of famous Armenian writer and composer Sayat Nova will be published in Turkey, in Armenian and Turkish, on the initiative of the Turkish Ministry of Sayat NovaCulture, SonDakika.com reports.

It will be the first time when an Armenian-language book will be published in Turkey with state sponsorship. There is already an agreement with Armenian translators. The preparatory works will be over soon and the book will be released in June.

It is noteworthy that Turkish media present this initiative as the next step by Ankara, following the message of condolences issued by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on April 23.
