Why Putin and Trump Owe Popularity to Strong Leadership

December 28, 2015 By administrator

Voters are attracted to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Republican presidential contender Donald Trump because of their decisiveness, a US study has found.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Republican presidential contender Donald Trump both have the voters’ preference for a strong leader, acting decisively in a crisis, to thank for their popularity, according to a US study.

“When a country is facing urgent threats from the outside, citizens want a head of state who can take immediate action. Citizens under direct threat want a leader who can and will guarantee their security,” explained Steven V. Miller in the Washington Post.

Miller, an assistant professor in political science at Clemson University, carried out a study which looked at the reasons why individuals support state leaders with broad authority that is organized around their leadership.

The professor examined the high levels of support enjoyed by President Putin, who has a 90 percent approval rating in Russia, and by Trump, who is leading the Republican primaries with an approval rating more than twice that of Ted Cruz in second place.

“All that support, for both Putin in Russia and Trump in the US, implies that citizens are seeking what I call ‘strong leaders,’ or state leaders who will take bold action without concern for checks and balances.”

“Why do citizens support the ‘strong leadership’ proposed by Trump or provided by Putin? My research shows citizens across the world — not just the US and Russia — prefer this kind of leader when they are afraid of a serious threat to national security or economic livelihood,” wrote Miller, who also identified a similar trend in India in recent times.

In Russia, citizens are worried by instability in Ukraine, given its close proximity and links with Russia, writes Miller. In the US, he identified terrorism, migration, and a worsening economic situation as the fears which drive voters to seek a strong leader.

Putin killed reporters? Prove it!’ – Trump to ABC show host

Donald Trump has fiercely defended Vladimir Putin when an ABC host cited “allegations” accusing the Russian president of killing reporters. Try to prove it, the Republican presidential hopeful said, reminding the media of the presumption of innocence.

The heated discussion took place on ABC’s “This Week” show on Sunday when host George Stephanopoulos started asking the mogul about President Putin’s policy.

Question after question – on Russia’s alleged desire for world domination, relations with Iran, Ukraine – and finally, Stephanopoulos decided to play the Politkovskaya murder card.

“There are many allegations he was behind the killing of Anna Politkovskaya,” Stephanopoulos said. Politkovskaya, a prominent investigative journalist and human rights activist, was killed on October 7, 2006.

Important distinction: thug Putin kills journalists and opponents; our presidents kill terrorists and enemy combatants.

— Mitt Romney (@MittRomney) December 18, 2015

He even quoted a tweet from Obama’s Republican rival in 2012, Mitt Romney, who wrote: “Important distinction: thug Putin kills journalists and opponents; our presidents kill terrorists and enemy combatants.”

“But, in all fairness to Putin, you’re saying he killed people, I haven’t seen that. I don’t know that he has. Have you been able to prove that?” Trump said, sharply.

The US presidential candidate admitted that it would have been “despicable” if Putin were really implicated, but he hasn’t seen “any evidence that he’s killed anybody in terms of reporters.”

“It’s never been proven that he’s killed anybody. So, you know, you’re supposed to be innocent until proven guilty, at least in our country,” Trump added.

The ABC host referred to numerous “allegations.”

“I’m saying when you say a man has killed reporters, I’d like you to prove it,” Trump argued. “And I’m saying it would be a terrible thing if it were true. But I have never seen any information or any proof that he killed reporters.”

In fact, “our country does plenty of killing,” Trump added, referring to the United States. When he was asked to clarify his phrase, he lashed out at another presidential candidate – Hilary Clinton.

“I think Hillary Clinton, when she was secretary of state, made some horrible, horrible decisions, and thousands and thousands and even hundreds of thousands of people have been killed. Take a look at what we’re doing in the Middle East. We went into Iraq, we shouldn’t have.”

Putin slams Turkey in fresh attacks over downing of Russian jet

December 17, 2015 By administrator

Putin speechRussian President Vladimir Putin has used crude language in a furious new attack on Turkey over the downing of a Russian combat jet last month, BBC News reports.

The incident on the Syria-Turkey border was a “hostile act” but Russia was “not the country” to run away, he told his annual news conference.

He saw “no prospect” of ties improving with Turkey, which Russia has put under sanctions, under its current leaders. “The Turks”, he said, had “decided to lick the Americans in a certain place”.

Russia deployed its air force to Syria in September in support of President Bashar al-Assad and has been carrying out air strikes on his opponents.

Its intervention has been heavily criticized by Turkey, the U.S. and Gulf Arab states.

Putin is now into his third term as president since 2000, battling an economic crisis. Critics say civil liberties have been steadily eroded under his rule.

He remains one of the world’s most recognizable politicians, and has topped the list of The World’s Most Powerful People compiled by Forbes magazine for the third year running.

Putin touched on other issues at the news conference:

He denied Russian regular troops were deployed in rebel-held eastern Ukraine but said there could be “people there who were carrying out certain tasks including in the military sphere.”

He predicted economic growth in Russia the new year of 0.7%, rising to 1.9% in 2017 and 2.4% in 2018, based on oil at $50 a barrel.

Putin said his country’s economic crisis had peaked.

While oil prices had fallen sharply, he said, manufacturing had shown slight growth and there was a healthy trade balance in agriculture.

Russia’s Putin says Turkey won’t get away with tomato bans

December 3, 2015 By administrator

f566027fd09eb4_566027fd09eeb.thumbRussia will not indulge in sabre rattling, but Turkey should brace for a far harsher response than the decision to impose a ban on the export of tomatoes to Russia, President Vladimir Putin said in the annual address to the Federal Assembly on Thursday, the news agency Tass reports.
“Nobody will ever see a nervous, hysterical reaction, risky for ourselves and the whole world. A reaction that might yield some external effects or, possibly, brief and timeserving gains,” he said. “There will be nothing like this. Responsibility for the country and the people will be the basis of our actions. We are not going to indulge in sabre rattling and we will not do that.”
“If somebody may have thought that after committing a treacherous war crime – the killing of our people – it will be possible to get away with restrictions on tomato trade or some other restrictions in the building and other industries, they are grossly mistaken,” Putin said. “We shall remind them many a time what they have done and they will more than once feel regret what they have done. We are perfectly aware of what action is to be taken.”
“Our armed forces, secret services and law enforcement agencies have been mobilized to give a rebuff to the terrorist threat,” Putin said. “Everybody should be aware of one’s responsibility: the authorities, political parties, civil society structures and mass media. Russia’s strength is in the free development of all peoples, in the diversity and harmony of cultures, languages and traditions, in mutual respect and dialogue among the Orthodox Christians, Muslims, Judaists and Buddhists.”
“We are obliged to firmly resist any manifestations of extremism and xenophobia and take care of the inter-ethnic and inter-religious accord. This is the historical basis of our society and of Russian statehood,” Putin said.
The Russian president has accused Ankara of supporting terrorists but said he considered the Turkish people friendly.
“We know who in Turkey makes money and allows terrorists to make profit,” the Russian president said in his annual State of the Nation Address on Thursday. According to him, this money is used by gunmen for “recruiting mercenaries, purchasing weapons, organizing inhuman terrorist attacks directed against our citizens, citizens of France, Lebanon, Mali and other countries.”
The Russian president recalled that militants who operated in the North Caucasus in the 1990s and 2000s had taken refuge and received financial backing in Turkey. “And now they are still spotted there,” he said.
“Meanwhile, the Turkish people are good, hard-working and gifted. We have a lot of old and reliable friends in Turkey. I will emphasize that we do not equate them and the part of the current ruling elite, which bears direct responsibility for the deaths of our service members in Syria,” the Russian leader said.
“We will not forget this complicity with terrorists,” the Russian president noted. “We have always considered treachery to be the worst and the most shameful thing. Let those in Turkey who shot our pilots in the back, who are hypocritically trying to justify themselves, their actions and cover up the crimes of terrorists know this,” he said.
Putin noted he was curious as to why the Turkish authorities had issued the order to shoot down a Russian warplane. “Any questions, any problems and contradictions that we did not even see should have been resolved in a totally different way. We were ready to cooperate with Turkey on the most sensitive for it issues and were ready to go as far as its allies were unwilling to go. Maybe, only Allah knows why they did that,” the Russian president said.

Putin ordered the 58th Russian Army Military District of the North Caucasus to be deployed in Armenia

December 2, 2015 By administrator

arton119380-480x320According to information circulating in the Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) President Putin signed yesterday morning an order asking the 58th Army Military District of the North Caucasus to deploy immediately regiments “selected” and specialized brigades in military electronic warfare, air defense systems, multiple rocket launchers, anti-tank equipment and artillery forces at the Turkish-Armenian border, a total of nearly 7,000 Russian soldiers currently being state of complete fight.

According to this information, the legal authority for this massive combat deployment is due to the Russian-Armenian agreement on common air defense system signed by President Putin on November 11 and will be finalized this week by Prime Minister Medvedev.

With Armenia becoming an essential part of the Common Strategy of the Russian air defense, military forces of the Russian Federation will now be able to counter threats from Turkey says several anonymous sources.

It is important to note that during this military deployment of the Russian Federation in Armenia, these forces will be protected, like their counterparts operating in Syria, with S-400 (NATO designation SA-21 Growler) mobile systems missiles medium and long term Sol-Air and jamming platforms Krasukha-4 giving them total superiority of air defense on more than 85 per cent of Turkish territory.

Krasukha-4 is a mobile broadband equipment, mounted on the chassis 8 X 8 type BAZ-6910-022, which scrambles the surveillance radars military satellites, ground-based radars and airborne AWACS and those mounted on unmanned aircraft (drone).

The Krasukha-4 is the only system capable of blurring the American spy satellites family Lacrosse / Onyx. These satellites fly in low orbit and equipped with SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) that allows them to penetrate the layer of clouds and the ground or walls of buildings, with a resolution of 20 cm.

The 4-Krasukha equipment is being set up in Syria on the Russian air base Hmeymim (Governorate of Latakia) and creates an invisibility shield to the objects in the air and on the ground with a radius of 300 km. The Krasukha-4 is able to “blind” radars for detecting and guiding anti-aircraft missiles MIM-104 Patriot located on the Turkish border, and also radars Turkish fighter aircraft F-16C off from the Incirlik base and helping to establish a “no fly zone” over Syria.

Putin says Turkey encourages own society’s Islamization

November 25, 2015 By administrator

Putin sayRussian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, November 25, said Turkey’s political leaders had been encouraging the Islamization of Turkish society, something he said was a problem, Russian agencies quoted him as saying, according to Reuters.

Speaking a day after Turkey shot down one of Moscow’s jets, Putin said:

“The problem is not the tragedy we witnessed yesterday,” the TASS news agency quoted him as saying.

“The problem is much deeper. We observe … that the current Turkish leadership over a significant number of years has been pursuing a deliberate policy of supporting the Islamisation of their country.”

Putin also said that an S-300 air defense system would be sent to Russia’s air base in Syria, Interfax and other agencies reported. The Defense Ministry said earlier on Wednesday that Russia would send an S-400 system to the base.

In a separate statement to agencies, Russia’s Defense Ministry said that the second pilot of the downed SU-24 jet was safe and had returned to Russia’s air base in Syria.

Turkey accomplice of terrorists: Putin vows serious consequence

November 24, 2015 By administrator

1029739801Russian President Vladimir Putin has called Turkey “accomplices of terrorists” and warned of “serious consequences” after a Turkish F-16 jet shot down a Russian warplane on Tuesday, November 24 morning, the first time a Nato country and Moscow have exchanged direct fire over the crisis in Syria, the Guardian reports.

The Russian president, speaking before a meeting with King Abdullah II of Jordan in Sochi, said the plane had been shot down over Syrian airspace and fell 4km inside Syria. Putin said it was “obvious” the plane posed no threat to Turkey.

“Our military is doing heroic work against terrorism … But the loss today is a stab in the back, carried out by the accomplices of terrorists. I can’t describe it in any other way,” he said. Putin suggested the Turks were shielding Islamic State terrorists from Russian attacks, saying: “Do they want to make Nato serve Isis?”

The Turkish military said it scrambled two F-16 fighter jets after a plane entered Turkish airspace in the province of Hatay at 9.20am on Tuesday, warning it to leave 10 times in five minutes before shooting it down.

“This isn’t an action against any specific country: our F-16s took necessary steps to defend Turkey’s sovereign territory.”

Russia’s defense ministry, in a series of tweets, confirmed that a Russian Su-24 had been shot down, but insisted the plane had never left Syrian airspace and claimed that fire from the ground was responsible. “At all times, the Su-24 was exclusively over the territory of Syria,” the defence ministry said.

“The Su-24 was at 6,000 metres and preliminary information suggests it was brought down by fire from the ground. The circumstances are being investigated.”

There were unconfirmed reports that both pilots were killed after parachuting from the jet. The Turkish TV network CNN Türk reported that one of the pilots was found dead. A graphic video purporting to show a dead Russian pilot has been widely circulated.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Russian helicopters were combing the crash site area in Jabal al-Turkman in Syria’s northern Latakia province for the pilots, and have apparently blocked wireless communications.

The area near where the plane was shot down is the site of continuing clashes between forces loyal to the embattled Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, and rebels fighting to overthrow him.

Putin: Downing of Russian jet over Syria stab in the back by terrorist accomplices

Turkey backstabbed Russia by downing the Russian warplane and acted as accomplices of the terrorists, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

“This incident stands out against the usual fight against terrorism. Our troops are fighting heroically against terrorists, risking their lives. But the loss we suffered today came from a stab in the back delivered by accomplices of the terrorists,” Putin said.

Putin said the plane was hit by a Turkish warplane as it was traveling at an altitude of 6000 meters about a kilometer from the Turkish border. It was hit by an air-to-air missile launched by a Turkish F-16 jet. The crash site is four kilometers from the border. The plane posed no threat to Turkish national security, he stressed.

Putin said the plane was targeting terrorist targets in the Latakia province of Syria, many of whom came from Russia.

Russia has for a long time been aware of oil going from Syria under the control of terrorists to Turkey, Putin said. The money finances terrorist groups.

“IS has big money, hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars, from selling oil. In addition they are protected by the military of an entire nation. One can understand why they are acting so boldly and blatantly. Why they kill people in such atrocious ways. Why they commit terrorist acts across the world, including in the heart of Europe,” the Russian leader said.

The downing of the Russian warplane happened despite Russia signing an agreement with the US to prevent such incidents in Syria, Putin stressed. Turkey claims to be part of the US-led coalition fighting against IS in Syria, he added.

The incident will have grave consequences for Russia’s relations with Turkey, Putin warned.

“We have always treated Turkey as not only a close neighbor, but also as a friendly nation,” he said. “I don’t know who has an interest in what happened today, but we certainly don’t.”

The fact that Turkey did not try to contact Russia in the wake of the incident and rushed to call a NATO meeting instead is worrisome, Putin said. It appears that Turkey want NATO to serve the interests of IS, he added.

Putin said Russia respects the regional interests of other nations, but warned the atrocity committed by Turkey would not go without an answer.

Putin was speaking at a meeting with King of Jordan Abdullah II in Sochi, who expressed his condolences to the Russian leader over the loss of a Russian pilot in Tuesday’s incident, as well as the deaths of Russians in the Islamic State bombing of a passenger plane in Egypt.

The two leaders discussed the anti-terrorist effort in Syria and Iraq and the diplomatic effort to find a political solution to the Syrian conflict.

Earlier a Russian Su-24 bomber was shot down by Turkish fighter jets near the Turkish-Syrian border. Turkey claimed that the plane violated Turkish airspace and did not respond to warnings. Ankara said it was rightfully acting to defend its sovereignty.

Russia insists that the plane stayed in the Syrian airspace.

One of the two pilots of the downed Russian warplane was reported killed by a rebel group as he was parachuting down on the ground after ejecting from the plane. The fate of the second pilot remains unknown.
