Armenia’s PM rules out NK conflict settlement without Artsakh people’s participation

July 20, 2018 By administrator

There will be no solution to the Artsakh conflict without the participation of the people of Artsakh, Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said during a press conference in the government, reports Armenpress.

“It is stated in all working documents that Artsakh should be fully involved in the process of the final stage of the Artsakh conflict settlement”, the PM said.

Pashinyan said that before this, however, there can be discussions over this issue. “I have announced that I am ready to negotiate with the Azerbaijani president and I also repeat it now. There is a negotiation material, we need to get acquainted with it, analyze and negotiate. The negotiations are also useful since a certain atmosphere of trust should be created for the settlement of the conflict. Without that the conflict settlement is impossible”, the Armenian PM said, once again stating that the Armenian side is ready to make efforts to create an atmosphere for the conflict settlement.

PM Nikol Pashinyan said Armenia considers unacceptable the militaristic and aggressive rhetoric run by Azerbaijan. “We tell the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs and the international community that we are ready to make sincere efforts for the Artsakh conflict settlement. However, we all need to record that this requires an atmosphere for the settlement. You will not see any action by Armenia and its people which undermines that atmosphere”, he said.

He repeated the previously made statement according to which after the revolution in Armenia, the increase of Azerbaijan’s aggressive behavior is linked with the fear of the Azerbaijani authorities that their people can be encouraged by the recent democratic changes in Armenia. “They may fear that the process can be transported to Azerbaijan, therefore, they are trying to distract their society’s attention from the corruption and democracy situation in the country to the Artsakh conflict, to continue the traditional hostile policy”, PM said, adding that what happened in Armenia was a pure domestic political process.

Austrian elections: Young, conservative Sebastian Kurz’s People’s Party wins poll

October 15, 2017 By administrator

At just 31, Sebastian Kurz appears set to become Austria’s next chancellor after his People’s Party won the most votes in parliamentary elections. The far-right Freedom Party may be key to his government.

At just 31, Sebastian Kurz appears set to become Austria’s next chancellor after his People’s Party won the most votes in parliamentary elections on Sunday.

The People’s Party (ÖVP) won 31.6 percent of the vote in Sunday’s parliamentary elections, marking a major victory for the 31-year-old, according to the latest vote count by state broadcaster ORF. If the ÖVP keeps that vote count, they’re set to lead parliament with at least 62 seats.

“I can promise you today that I will fight for change in this country with all my power,” Kurz told supporters at a rally. “I accept this responsibility with great humility.”

The right coalition

The far-right, anti-immigration Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ) came in third place with 26 percent, amounting to 51 seats, while the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) managed to garner 26.9 percent, placing them in second with 53 seats.

“It shows that we have arrived at the center of society. We are the ones that dominate the political debate,” said FPÖ chief Heinz-Christian Strache.

Kurz’s ÖVP is expected to form a government with the far-right FPÖ, after he ended a grand coalition government with the center-left SPÖ earlier this year. It would mark the first time the far-right party enters government since 2000.

‘Other options’

However, Kurz suggested he is open to talks with other parties. “I would of course like to form a stable government. If that cannot be done then there are other options,” Kurz told ORD.

Finance Minister Hans Jörg Schelling, a member of the ÖVP, told DW that the center-right party – as a whole – is open to talks with both the FPÖ and the Social Democrats. Meanwhile, SPÖ chief Christian Kern said he will stay on as his party’s leader despite losing to his government’s junior coalition partner.

Greens out?

The New Austrian and Liberal Forum (NEOS) picked up 5.1 percent of the vote, amounting to 10 seats, which remains roughly unchanged from the 2013 election.

The Green Party took a beating, losing 8.5 percent compared to the 2013 election. The Greens managed to garner 3.9 percent of the vote, which isn’t enough to make it into parliament.

The Greens’ lead candidate Ulrike Lunacek said the election result has been difficult to stomach, describing it as a “heavy defeat and a great disappointment.” However, an offshoot party led by former Greens member Peter Pilz managed to gain 4.4 percent of the vote, amounting to 8 seats.

Italian journalist: In Armenia, land of lavash and duduk, no misfortune could spoil peoples’ soul

August 9, 2015 By administrator

Armenia ItalyArmenia is “a country of yelling stones.” These are the Russian poet Osip Mandelstam’s words about Armenia. It is the most beautiful description expressing the whole charm of a land where things have soul. This is how the Italian journalist Francesco Castellini shares his impressions about a visit to Armenia in an article published on the website of the journal Giornale dell’ Umbria .

“Four hour’s flight from Italy to Armenia. That country’s history and beauty will live in my memory forever. Armenia is an oasis between the East and the West,” the journalist writes.

It is a magic world where the history has penetrated even into the wrinkles, where everyone retains their unique identity. It is a splendid place. The people there were able to protect their cultural and religious heritage throughout centuries; this is how the Italian journalist describes Armenia and the Armenians.

Castellini highlights that Armenia is the only Christian country in the middle of “the Muslim world”. Its pride is expressed in the architecture, in its art and music.

“Many people say it is not easy to leave Armenia, still, it is even more difficult not to come back. Certainly, those who dip into this extraordinary atmosphere, are caught in a trap, for once you are there the feeling of nostalgia remains with you forever,” the Italian journalist writes.

He describes Armenia as a treasury of natural beauty, spirituality, mystique. There is space for everything in the 30 thousand square kilometers of Armenia – wild and high mountains, a big lake with hospitable coasts, mysterious plains where the stones are placed so precisely that the locals were able to be the first to study the stars and constellations.

“This is the land, where, as the Biblical tradition has it, Eden Garden is situated. Even Ararat and contour of Noah’s Ark can be seen from this land on sunny days. An assortment of beautiful, magnificent and original landscapes – khachkars, crosses engraved on stones, have these all like embroidery on tufa. It is a small country of enormous impressions. This is what all the travelers say,” the traveler journalist admires.

The Armenians’ legendary kindness, friendliness and generosity were not left unnoticed by the journalist. All the difficulties they were forced to suffer throughout the centuries to survive, the evil, the misfortunes around them, the mass killings were not able to spoil and stain the Armenians’ soul.

The author stresses that there were many who tried to wipe the Armenian people off the face of the Earth, yet no one could do that. The distinctive character, values, traditions, they remain in memory, in what happened, in what it saw. “So no one must forget the Armenian Genocide that almost exterminated them, the tragedy which marked the border between ‘before’ and ‘after’ with indelible blood,” Castellini writes.

He also appreciated the exclusively unique and original architecture in Armenia. The architectural solutions of the artisans and architects contributed to the construction of such earthquake resistant buildings in the 5th and 6th centuries that arise admiration even today. “And the churches stand as evidence of the deep religious feelings of these people,” the author writes. Besides, Armenia is the country of lavash, dances, folk music and the penetrating sounds of duduk.
The authors ends his article with the moment his plane landed in Yerevan airport Zvartnots. He describes it as angels’ dwelling-place that opens its doors for the newcomers into a mysterious and fascinating world, where everyone can discover something new for them.
