Breaking News: Russian parliament unanimously approves use of military in Syria to fight ISIS

September 30, 2015 By administrator

457816_img650x420_img650x420_cropThe upper chamber of the Russian parliament has unanimously given a formal consent to President Putin to use the nation’s military in Syria to fight terrorism at a request from the Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Consent was necessary for use of the country’s military for foreign combat missions under the Russian constitution.

The request for use of force was sent by the president after considering the large number of citizens of Russia and neighboring countries, who went to join terrorist groups fighting in Syria, head of the presidential administration Sergey Ivanov told media. There are thousands of them, and Russia’s national security would be under threat, should they return home, he added.

“This is not about reaching for some foreign policy goals, satisfying ambitions, which our Western partners regularly accuse us of. It’s only about the national interest of the Russian Federation,” the official said.

Ivanov stressed that no ground operations are planned in Syria. Russia would use its warplanes to hit terrorist targets when requested by the Syrian government. He stressed that unlike the US-led coalition of countries that bombs militant troops in Syria, Russia was invited to do so by the legal authorities of Syria and thus follows international law.

“The military goal of the operation is strictly to provide air support for the [Syrian] government forces in their fight against Islamic State,” he said.

The bombing campaign is time-limited, Ivanov said, not revealing a clear deadline for it. He said he was not authorized to disclose details of the operation such as the number of warplanes involved.

“All our partners and allies will be informed about our decision today through corresponding military channels. Specific military information will be provided as well, I believe,” he concluded.

Military engagement in Syria would not result in Russia being mired in conflict, Konstantin Kosachev, head of the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs, said commenting on the news.

“We would not risk getting stuck in a long conflict and threaten the lives of our troops. The operation is aerial only. Certainly, in coordination with the ground operation of the Syrian army,” he told the Rossiya 24 news channel.

Previously, Russia provided the Syrian government with advanced weapons and military instructors to teach the Syrians how to use them.

The developement comes after Moscow has intensified involvement in Syria, establishing an Iraqi-based military communications center with Damascus, Baghdad and Tehran.

It also happened just days after President Putin called for an international anti-terrorist effort in Syria that would include the government of President Assad at the UN General Assembly. Western nations have been seeking to oust Assad since 2011, but several key nations such as Germany, France, Britain and the US have confirmed they would not be opposed to Assad staying in power for a transitional period, which would include defeating the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorist group.

European Parliament Member to Ask European Commission to Denounce Azerbaijani ‘Act of War’

September 26, 2015 By administrator

Michele-RivasiBRUSSELS (ARMENPRESS)—Vice Chair of the Europe Ecologie-The Greens Group and member of the European Parliament Michele Rivasi expressed her concerns over the latest ceasefire violations by Azerbaijan which resulted in the death of three civilians in Armenia border settlements. Rivasi represents South East France for The Greens political party in the European Parliament.

Rivasi spoke to an Armenpress correspondent in Brussels and said that she was “scandalized” by the violence.

“I am scandalized by this violence. We know of the historical enmity which exists between Azerbaijan and Nagorno-Karabakh, but this time it directly concerns Armenia,” Rivasi said.

“I will ask the European Commission to denounce this act of violence, this act of war. It is unacceptable. This is a provocation which resulted in the death of three women which is completely unacceptable.”

“The European Commission has to react to the actions of Azerbaijan,” said Rivasi.

Rivasi continued her strong condemnation of Azerbaijan’s provocations, echoing statements made by Armenian officials that Azerbaijan’s actions were an attempt to halt negotiations on the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“This is done to provoke Armenia and to get [a] reaction from Armenia. That would be the beginning of the end. The European Commission has to denounce the acts of Azerbaijan and also to sanction them. I find this unacceptable and very grave.”

“This is a way to prevent any negotiations. An encounter [between the foreign ministers] was planned and this is a sterile provocation which can be very dangerous for the future.”

“I want everybody to calm down and I want the commission to react in regards to this. This is not only a matter between Armenia and Azerbaijan. European and international institutions have to denounce these acts,” Rivasi said.

“Two civilians were killed and two were injured due to rival shooting in Berdavan community of Tavush region on September 24. Sona Revazyan, 1974, and Shushan Asatryan, 1921, are the victims. Earlier it became known that in another bordering community of T

August 26, 2015 By administrator

armenian-runThe Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC Australia) has welcomed the pre-selection of Hovig Melkonian as the Australian Labor Party’s candidate for the Federal seat of Casey in Victoria, ANC Australia said in a statement.

Melkonian is a current ANC Australia National Board member and he will take an extended leave of absence from his position to contest the election, which will likely take place no later than 2016.

79% of Labor members in the Casey branch supported Melkonian’s nomination as their Party’s candidate and he was pre-selected unopposed by Labor’s public office selection committee.

“I’m honoured to have earned the support of rank-and-file members to contest the next federal election as the Labor candidate for Casey,” Melkonian said.

“This is the part of the world where I grew up. I’m very proud to have the opportunity to represent this community.”

Melkonian will be running against the incumbent Liberal Member for Casey and new Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tony Smith MP.

Melkonian studied Advanced Manufacturing and Mechatronics Engineering at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). He has also served in the National Union of Students as a Welfare Officer and as an RMIT Council Member.
