Turkish ship carrying arms docks in Yemen, offloads cargo

September 12, 2013 By administrator

A Turkish-owned ship carrying a large consignment of weapons has reportedly docked in Yemen, and its arms cargo has been offloaded under the cover of darkness.

pirhayati20130909224017427The vessel arrived at the strategic port of Midi — which is situated in Yemen’s western province of Hajjah and lies on the Red Sea — late on September 7, local Yemeni media reported.

The media added that the port was under an unofficial state of emergency as crates of weapons were being offloaded from the ship and loaded onto several trucks. The trucks later drove to unknown places.

Some sources have said that the Turkish ship was carrying medium caliber weapons. They added that Turkish ships have on occasions docked at Midi port, and offloaded shipments of weaponry.
In early July, Yemeni security forces seized a ship carrying Turkish-made weapons near the strait of Bab al-Mandab.

The ship was intercepted after entering the Yemeni territorial waters near Zoqar Island in the Red Sea. An official at Yemen’s Supreme Security Committee said that the seized weapons, among them colt pistols, were bound for a Yemeni port.

Yemen’s Defense Ministry announced in May that the army captured a boat carrying 20,000 Turkish-made guns in the coastal regions of the country.

Also in June, Yemen’s authorities seized a boat filled with Turkish-made weaponry, including 15,000 colt pistols, near the strait of Bab al-Mandab.
