Nicolas Sarkozy: We must clearly tell Turkey that it does not intend to enter the EU

The chairman of Republicans gave an interview to the seven European newspapers members Lena (Leading European Newspaper Alliance): La Repubblica, El Pais, Die Welt, Le Soir, La Tribune de Genève, Tages-Anzeiger and Le Figaro.

LENA. – What inspired you the latest acts of terrorism, the killing of Orlando and the murder of a French policeman and his wife in Magnanville?

Nicolas SARKOZY. – These tragic events show that we are at war. A foreign war against the Islamic State and al-Qaida, and an internal war against those of our fellow followers of radical Islam. If one wants to fight our enemy, we must designate: the jihadism and radical Islamism, which feed each other. How to accept how radical Islam treats women, persecutes gays … It’s a shame!

What to do about it?

The threat has changed in nature, size and importance. It abolished the last taboos: in France, a business leader was beheaded, a martyred newspaper, referred concert, outdoor cafes strafed, policemen murdered in their homes … It’s our whole society is attacked. But democracies have not yet taken the full measure of changes over the past two years, the response has not been up to.

I propose four immediate steps. First, we must put all Islamists held in solitary confinement, as there is a proselytizing in prisons must be fought. Secondly, I request the urgent creation of a real prison intelligence service. Not only must “add sound” (wiretap, Ed) cells, but it takes human intelligence, as indeed in places of worship and extremists within radicalized groups. Prison guards also must be attached to the Interior Ministry and not to the Department of Justice, because they are security personnel.

Third, foreign or binational person connected with terrorist activities or networks to be deported immediately. That the state of emergency serves at least that! We do not have the means to monitor round the clock stuck the some 11,500 individuals. Now all those who have gone to the act, without exception, had been spotted at some point. I request that the precautionary principle applies to security. The precautionary principle is also lengthen the sentences for those guilty of crimes related to terrorism and ensure their implementation.

France: Nicolas Sarkozy: I am resolutely against the prospect of Turkish accession to the European Union

March 10, 2016 By administrator

arton123081-480x251Interview with Nicolas Sarkozy in Le Monde dated March 10, 2016.

Should we establish an agreement with Turkey on the issue of refugees?

Yes, obviously. Who can be against? Turkey is a major regional power, a major player. An agreement with Ankara is essential but not in any conditions. The agreement which is currently developing between the EU and Turkey is akin to blackmail. I support the potential European effort to fund the “hot spots” in Turkey, but I am totally opposed to the abolition of visas for some 80 million Turks who then circulate freely throughout the Schengen area.

That lightens procedures for Turkish economic players, why not … But it makes no sense to consider removing them for the entire Turkish population in the security and migration situation in Europe. How can we say that we will abolish visas for Turks, while calling for Greece to restore border controls? Similarly, I am resolutely against the prospect of Turkish accession to the European Union. Why open negotiations with that country on the monetary chapter? Because it is envisaged that it is in the euro zone? For me it is out of question.

Nicolas Sarkozy’s UMP claims major victory in local French ballots

Former president Nicolas Sarkozy’s right-wing Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) and centrist allies on Sunday won control of an overwhelming majority of departments in France, in a major blow to the ruling Socialist Party.

The UMP, in coalition with moderates from the Union of Democrats and Independents (UDI), claimed as many as 70 out of a possible 98 departments as voters punished President François Hollande’s embattled government.

“The results [of the election] went far beyond local concerns. With their ballots French voters have massively rejected the policies of François Hollande and his government,” Sarkozy told supporters gathered at the UMP’s headquarters in Paris shortly after the first exit polls appeared around 8 p.m. local time.

The UMP’s celebration was crowned by a handful of symbolic victories, including in the central Corrèze department – home to François Hollande and under Socialist control since 2008.

Earlier Prime Minister Manuel Valls admitted on live television that his Socialist Party had suffered clear setbacks, blaming “distractions” and “divisions” among the left.

He also recognised the steady progression of the far-right.

“This is a sign of a lasting upheaval of our political landscape and we will all need to draw lessons from it,” Valls said in reference to the far-right gains across the country. However, the tough-talking PM did not announce any major policy changes.

In an exception to Sunday’s general trend toward the right, the southern department of Lozère passed to Socialist hands, interior ministry results showed.

No FN wins

Despite historically high scores at the local level, the far-right National Front failed to win majority control of any departmental councils.

France’s CSA polling firm said FN candidates had finished first in at least 43 cantons, the geographical units that make up French departments, but did not have enough councillors to take control of any departments.

“I don’t think there will be any National Front departments,” deputy party leader Florian Philippot said on television on Sunday evening.

Earlier, party leader Marine Le Pen avoided the issue of how many departments her anti-immigration party would gain, claiming voters were steadily turning away from France’s mainstream parties.
