Kobani, Kurdish majority believes Turkey is helping the Islamic groups. Hospitals overflow

January 15, 2015 By administrator

By Massoud Hamed,

A view shows smoke raising from a Kobani neighbourhood damaged by fighting between Islamic State militants and Kurdish forcesKOBANI, Syria — It was not easy for Al-Monitor to enter Kobani. The random shelling by the Islamic groups, on the one hand, and the closure of the border crossings by Turkish forces on the other, made it difficult for us to get any news about what was happening across the border. The invasion of the city and the security cordon that was imposed on it — aimed at intimidating citizens — resulted in the displacement of about 200,000 people from Kobani and its surrounding villages. Most of them fled to the Turkish city of Suruc.

Suruc is about eight kilometers (five miles) from the Syrian border and Kobani. Al-Monitor had trouble getting in as there were no smugglers on the Syrian-Turkish border, who usually allow people to cross it. Those who cooperated support the People’s Protection Units (YPG) — the Kurdish forces fighting in the city.

Driving through some villages, Al-Monitor noticed that some residents are guarding the bordering region at night. The region’s overwhelming Kurdish majority believes that Turkey is helping the Islamic groups enter the city of Kobani.

That is why they [Kurds] are protecting their cities. “We are protecting our villages to prevent these Islamic groups from entering the city and killing our people. The Turkish state is supporting them with arms and helping them to destroy this safe city,” a taxi driver told Al-Monitor.

The city’s hospitals have been destroyed so as to prevent fighters and civilians from receiving any treatment and to force them out. The field hospitals treating serious emergency cases have settled in some schools and basements as the National Hospital and the civil one have been destroyed.

Al-Monitor visited the field hospital that was established by fighters in the city. “I studied in the Maghreb. I am a radiologist but under the circumstances I am administering first aid and taking care of other cases. The humanitarian situation is really bad and unbearable to anyone. The Islamic State (IS) is not only trying to control the city but to terrorize people with behaviors we have never been used to. They are trying to impose their 14-century-old rules. The hospital here is in a dire condition, as we are suffering from a lack of essential medications, which prevent us from helping some fighters and civilians.”

“I am not here after money but to protect my people and take care of my brothers who are fighting to protect this land. We have few drugs to treat people and we are not allowed entry of humanitarian aid from the Turkish side, while Turkey has been supporting IS armed groups,” he added.

Since Sept.16, the city of Kobani has been bombed by Islamic groups, at certain times systematically, and at other times randomly. Heavy weapons have been used in the attack on the city, which led to the destruction of properties and homes. Some regional and international governments have sent intervention forces to stop IS from advancing and to aid the YPG. The Kurdistan Region of Iraq came to agreement with the Turkish state and the Kurdish People’s Protection Units to allow the heavily armed Kurdish peshmerga forces to enter Kobani, which came as part of the medical crew treating the wounded.

Al-Monitor met with Lt. Col. Dr. Hussein Mohammed, and asked him about the medical situation and about the problems suffered by the fighters and civilians.

“We are working with the Kurdish forces. We have some medical equipment and medications to treat the peshmerga forces and the wounded from our brothers in the YPG and the civilians. We are doing our best to treat the wounded Kurdish fighters and civilians in cooperation between us,” he said.

Kobani has turned into a ghost town. Buildings have been flattened to the ground, while the majority of the city’s residents have deserted, leaving it behind for the snipers of radical groups.

Al-Monitor spoke with some of the YPG’s wounded at a field hospital.

“Here, we are fighting terrorists,” one fighter told Al-Monitor. “Being injured for us is as if we were on a break only to resume fighting afterward. We are fighting wherever we are, not only on the battlefield. The wounded among us take up arms to protect themselves and the regions we have liberated. I have been fighting in Kobani since the beginning of the mercenaries’ attack. I did not want to leave. We have to fight against those because they are a threat to the entire humanity. We are being administered first aid to treat our wounds only to go back to our positions. There are no hospitals where we can stay. Some of our comrades are sent to Turkey if they suffer from serious injuries but the Turkish government has arrested many of them and killed others. Therefore, we prefer to stay here and receive medical treatment in these dire conditions.”

It was surprising to see a foreign female doctor helping people in the stricken city of Kobani. “I came here to find out what was going on. There are many things we do not know abroad,” Maria Robert, an Argentinian doctor, told Al-Monitor.

“I had been following up on the situation in the city and I was deeply affected by the bombing of civilians and how they has been displaced randomly and systematically. Innocent people were being slaughtered without any reason and there was no one to treat the wounded. I came here so I could help as much as possible, for the sake of humanity and out of respect for my profession,” she added.

The battles between the Kurdish forces and IS are still ongoing in Kobani and many believe that the Kurds are fighting terrorism on behalf of the world because control over border areas by these groups is a threat to the international community.

Davutoğlu Turkey, Iraq share same policy towards ISIL, PKK

December 26, 2014 By administrator

Davutoglu-Iraq-PMPrime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said Turkey and Iraq follow the same approach towards all terrorist groups in the region on Thursday.

“Turkey will continue to provide all kinds of support to Iraq in the fight against terrorist groups in the region. The two countries share the same approach against those groups, including the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK),” Davutoğlu added.

Addressing a joint press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on Thursday, Davutoğlu said Turkey’s main agenda is security and reiterated Turkey’s support for the territorial integrity of Iraq.

When asked about the claims that foreign fighters flow into Syria and Iraq via Turkey, Davutoğlu said Turkey is against this.

“There shouldn’t be any fighters in Syria and Iraq except their own citizens. Turkey is ready to cooperate against foreign fighters,” Davutoğlu added.

Speaking at the press conference, the Iraqi prime minister praised Turkey’s efforts in training Iraqi forces.

ISIS attacks Kobanê people under Turkish army supervision

December 24, 2014 By administrator

12.24.2014

ISIS gangs attacked people from Kobanê this morning with heavy weapons from the cover of a Turkish military post. Reported by firatajans.

ISIS gangs that are suffering heavy blows every day in Kobanê have begun to attack civilians. People from the village of Merdesimbêl near Kobanê brought their vehicles to an area 50 metres from the Mert Ismail military post on the Suruç border around 2 months ago, then crossed the border. The gangs then stole hundreds of vehicles from under the noses of Turkish troops, whereupon residents of Alişar who brought their vehicles to the same area have not abandoned them. The people have resisted the threats and attacks of gangs and Turkish soldiers alike.

This morning around 40 gang members based in the village of Alişar attacked the people from the security area within the military post. 100 people initially resisted, then took refuge in the military post. The soldiers, in two armoured vehicles, ignored what was going on right next to the military post. As the gang members occupied the area where the vehicles were parked, the soldiers withdrew to the confines of the post.

In the past ISIS gangs have attacked from security areas, killing one person in the village of Swêdê and 4 in the village of Boydê. The gangs are continuing their attacks, claiming the vehicles as booty.

Isis fighters capture Jordanian pilot after plane came down over Syria

December 24, 2014 By administrator

Image-released-by-Isis-pu-010Jordanian authorities confirm capture of pilot after first coalition warplane lost since air strikes began in Syria three months ago.

Fighters of the Islamic State (Isis) in Syria have scored a major propaganda coup by capturing a Jordanian air force pilot whose plane came down on Wednesday during an air raid by the international coalition near the northern city of Raqqa, the de facto jihadi capital.

Images posted on social media showed jubilant Isis gunmen, some of them masked, with a clearly frightened man, naked from the waist down and being dragged out of a lake. He was identified as the downed pilot and named on Twitter, which displayed his military ID card, as First Lieutenant Muadh al-Kasasbeh, 26. The Jordanian military immediately described him as a “hostage”.

The F-16 was the first warplane lost since the US-led coalition began air strikes against Isis in Syria three months ago. The group said it had shot down the fighter jet with a heat-seeking missile. It was not immediately clear whether it had indeed been shot down or suffered a technical failure. Another image on social media showing the plane’s intact cockpit canopy suggested that the pilot might have ejected.

Hundreds of coalition air attacks have helped stem Isis advances – though more successfully in Iraq than in Syria, where they have been criticised for weakening more moderate rebel groups fighting President Bashar al-Assad.

The Jordanian military issued a statement confirming the capture by Isis and saying it “holds the group and its supporters responsible for the safety of the pilot and his life”. It did not name him. “During a mission on Wednesday morning conducted by several Jordanian air force planes against hideouts of the IS terrorist organisation in the Raqqa region, one of the planes went down and the pilot was taken hostage,”, the Petra news agency quoted a source from the military’s general staff as saying. The Jordanian government went into emergency session to discuss its response.

ISIS arrests ‘extremists’ accused of plot against group, The men, speaking Azerbaijani Turkish

December 22, 2014 By administrator

AFP, Beirut
Monday, 22 December 2014

0ecdce95-3345-407c-9fec-06c4811d322c_16x9_600x338The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group has claimed the arrests of four jihadists it classified as “extremists” accused of plotting against the organization in areas of Iraq and Syria under its control.

In a video purportedly posted by ISIS on jihadist websites, a male voice claims to have “captured an extremist religious cell planning to take up arms against the Caliphate,” referring to the regions it controls in both countries.

In what ISIS said were confessions, the four detained men said they had plotted against ISIS as the group doesn’t view “all Iraqis and Syrians as infidels.”

The men, speaking Azerbaijani Turkish, accused ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi of being “an infidel as he takes money from infidels.”

The video does not specify when or where the men were arrested but it carries the initials of Syria’s Raqqa province, a stronghold of ISIS in the north of the war-ravaged country.

The fate of the four detainees is also not revealed, although the video ends with the recitation of a Koranic verse stating that those who fight against God and the Prophet Mohammad deserve to die or have their arms and legs amputated.

The Financial Times newspaper over the weekend reported that 100 foreign ISIS members had been executed by the group after trying to flee Raqqa.

Kurdish leader Salih Muslim: ISIS-Turkey relations should be investigated

December 19, 2014 By administrator

GÜLER – BRUSSELS

e0318235476330836fa0159d3ec4294fDemocratic Union Party (PYD) Co-President Salih Muslim who spoke to ANF reacted angrily to Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu’s comment that Turkey did not support ISIS, proposing that an independent international commission be set up to carry out an inquiry.

Defence line from Tel Kocher to Afrin

What is the current situation in the cantons of Rojava? Is there still a threat of attack?

There is war and struggle in Rojava. While military defence against attacks is continuing efforts are also being made to establish a system, which is gradually coming into being. All the institutions and people are involved in this system. The defence of this unique system is being undertaken by the people of Rojava from Tel Kocher to Afrin.

We know that before the Kobanê resistance there were circles that were opposed to you and did not accept your system. Has this changed?

Important cities like Mosul and Raqqa did not hold out 24 hours against But a small city like Kobanê has been resisting for 3 months. The whole world has seen this. This is down to organisation. If we had not been organised we couldn’t have resisted. This has undoubtedly changed many people’s minds.

Can people who are not PYD supporters take their place in the system?

The government in Rojava is not PYD or TEV-DEM. It is the people who are resolving their own problems. There is not a classic system of authority, this needs to be understood. The circles you mention have offices and associations in many towns, particularly in Qamişlo. Nobody prevents them carrying out their activities. Everyone is free to carry out their democratic activities. Let everyone struggle for the freedom of Rojava with their own ideas.

Following the halting of ISIS in Kobanê what changes have occurred in the region?

ISIS thought it could capture the whole region, but it was mistaken. Regional states and forces also calculated this would happen. But it hasn’t worked out like that. Even the US was fooled. Until a few months ago they didn’t want to speak to us. However, now they have realised the threat posed worldwide by ISIS.

A commission of inquiry should be set up

Which forces do you think are behind ISIS?

US Deputy President Joe Biden made this abundantly clear. The whole world knows who is behind them.

Recently ISIS launched an attack on Kobanê from Turkey. In the subsequent debate Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said: “No one can say we support ISIS”. How do you evaluate this?

We claim Turkey is supporting ISIS. We suspect this. If Ahmet Davutoğlu is right and is so sure, we propose that an independent international commission be set up to investigate what has gone on.

You are calling for a commission to be established?

Yes, it should come to Turkey, to Rojava and carry out an enquiry in the border areas. Then it will emerge who is and who isn’t supporting ISIS, and the debate will stop.

How are your relations with the opposition within Syria?

They previously carried our propaganda against us. Some circles oppose us, saying we have a relationship with the PKK, and others clasim we collaborate with the regime. For those reasons they didn’t want to associate with us in international forums. But Kobanê has demonstrated who is a terrorist and who is fighting against terrorism. Both Western countries and forces in the Middle East have changed their stance as they have realised we are a serious actor in the Middle East.

In 2015 we will develop Kurdish diplomacy

Weren’t the Kurds seen as an actor previously?

International forces previously spoke to the Kurds through states such as Turkey, Iran and Iraq, but with Kobanê the Kurds began to be spoken to directly. For instance, it is because of Kobanê that states such as America, the UK and France have accepted us at a high level. This came about as a result of the struggle being waged by the Kurds in Kobanê. For three months the hearts of 40 million Kurds have been beating for Kobanê. Hence, hundreds of thousands of people all over the world came onto the streets for Kobanê. This opened many doors.

How will this assist Rojava diplomacy in 2015. What initiatives are you thinking of taking?

As a movement we are new to diplomacy and international relations. Therefore we have shortcomings. We could have achieved a lot more if we had had the cadre and organisation. I therefore take this opportunity to call on young people in academic circles in different countries to make contact with us, as we cannot go everywhere.

But despite this we have made a good start, and in 2015 we are expecting to achieve significant results in diplomacy. We do not expect ISIS and the chaotic situation in the Middle East to end soon. We are a significant force in the region, despite our shortcomings. We have proved this. Every day we receive applications from dozens of delegations wanting to visit Rojava, as we are establishing a freedom-based system in the Middle East with women playing a prominent role. Hence the interest.

At the Kurdish conference in the European Parliament you said that you would take an initiative for 1 November to be declared an international day against terrorism and in solidarity with Kobanê. Have you taken any steps?

We have announced this twice. We will continue our efforts to have this taken up by international bodies such as the UN. We decided this as a party and will wage a struggle for it.

BREAKING NEWS: Police Storm Sydney Cafe Where Hostages Are Held

December 15, 2014 By administrator

Police officials identified the hostage-taker as Man Haron Monis, a self-proclaimed sheikh with a criminal record.  Credit Dean Lewins/European Pressphoto Agency

Heavily armed police in Sydney stormed a cafe early Tuesday where an armed self-proclaimed sheikh had held hostages for more than 16 hours. report NYT
Live television footage at the scene showed intense flashes of gunfire and the sound of loud ammunition rounds fired. Police were racing into the building with weapons drawn.
Just before police appeared to enter the building at least six hostages were seen running from the cafe.

Earlier, the police confirmed that the hostage-taker was Man Haron Monis, a man with a criminal record who called himself Sheikh Haron. Australian media reports quoted the man’s former lawyer as saying he was acting alone. But it was unclear whether the gunman had accomplices.

The siege had transfixed Australia since Monday morning, when the gunman took control of the Lindt Chocolate Cafe in central Sydney, with an unknown number of employees and customers trapped inside. The man was carrying a black flag with white Arabic script similar to those used by Islamic militants on other continents, and the flag was later displayed in the window of the cafe.

Five people, including two cafe employees, had fled by 7 p.m. Monday, but it was not clear whether the assailant had allowed them to leave or they had escaped.

Helicopters hovered over the city, the train network was temporarily stopped and strategic buildings — including the nearby Sydney Opera House, the New South Wales Parliament, the state library, law courts and the Reserve Bank — were evacuated or shut down. Traffic was stopped on part of the Sydney Harbor Bridge.

According to The Age, a national newspaper, Mr. Monis was free on bail in two separate criminal cases. He was charged in November 2013 with being an accessory before and after the fact in the murder of his ex-wife, Noleen Hayson Pal, who was stabbed and set on fire in an apartment in Werrington.
