Gohar Iskandaryan, Senior Researcher at the Department of Iranian studies, Institute of Oriental Studies, told reporters on Wednesday that the Iran nuclear deal agreement is a historic document as it is the result of 10year-long negotiations.
“A decision was made that allows the region to breathe freely. This year is a landmark year. We saw they eventually arrived at an agreement. This is extremely important,” Ms Iskandaryan said.
First of all, the agreement strengthens President Hassan Rouhani’s positions and enhances Iran’s regional role.
“So the West has achieved its aim and 130 to 150 IAEA experts are expected to work in Iran, while Iran will have the countries it has diplomatic relations with send its experts,” she said.
As a result of the negotiations, Iran will have all the sanctions against it lifted if the IAEA experts confirm Iran is honoring its commitments.
“There is an agreement, and if Iran fails to honor its commitments, all the sanctions against the country will be re-enforced the 65th day after the agreement was signed,” Ms Iskandaryan said.
As regards an impact the latest developments could have on Armenia, the expert said that Iran’s funds are frozen in western banks, and, under the agreements, Iran was promised gradual repayment.
“Iran will get the funds back and deal with its financial problems. The funds will also enable re-launching of a number of Iran-Armenia projects, especially the ones discontinued for financial reasons. The first project to be re-launched is Meghri HPP. A high-voltage transmission line projects will be continues as well,” Ms Iskandaryan said.
As regards an Iran-Armenian railway project, she said that it is more beneficial to Armenia than to Iran.
“Our leaders have the political will to translate the program into reality. The only thing to do is to procure funds.”
