Turkey’s Intervention in Northern Iraq Done with US Green Light

January 29, 2016 By administrator

13_dTEHRAN (Fars News Agency) – Turkey has sent its troops to Northern Iraq after receiving Washington’s green light as the recent statements of Turkish officials show, pro-Saudi media reported.

“Turkey’s insistence on military presence in Northern Iraq on the pretext of fighting terrorists there and Iraq’s failure to push Turkish troops out of its soil shows that Ankara has taken the move at the US order,” the London-based Arabic-language Al-Arab newspaper reported on Friday.

It said that the recent statements by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu who claimed that Turkey’s military presence in Northern Iraq has been justified for the world indicates a secret agreement between Ankara and Washington on the presence of Turkish troops in Iraq.

The newspaper noted that the Turkish troops are still in Northern Iraq near the city of Mosul which is under the control of the ISIL despite repeated protests by Iraqi officials.

On December 8, the Arab League condemned the deployment of Turkish troops in Northern Iraq, labeling the incident an “intervention.”

Following international criticism at Turkey’s decision to send troops into Northern Iraq to allegedly train Kurdish forces without Baghdad’s permission, Nabil Elaraby, Secretary-General of the Arab League, said the act was a “blatant intervention.”

He told newspaper Al Youm El Sabe that while the Arab League couldn’t take direct action against Turkey, they could release a statement condemning Ankara for the breach of Iraq’s national sovereignty.

Elaraby also warned that if Turkey continued to intervene in Iraqi territory without permission, then the Arab League would go to the UN Security Council to try and resolve the issue.

The furor came after more than 130 Turkish troops, along with tanks and artillery, entered Kurdish-controlled territory in Northern Iraq.

Turkish officials said the deployment was merely part of a routine training exercise with Kurdish forces to help them fight against Daesh, also known as ISIL.

However, Iraqi officials angrily criticized Turkey’s actions, saying that the move was a “serious breach of sovereignty.”

With tensions rising, Baghdad on Sunday threatened to go to the UN Security Council unless Turkey removed its forces within 48 hours.

“Iraq has the right to use all available options, including resorting to the UN Security Council if these forces are not withdrawn within 48 hours,” Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said in a statement.

Iraqi Defense Minister Khaled al-Obeidi backed his prime minister, saying that Turkey needed to consult with the Iraqi government, regardless of what their motives were in the fight against jihadist groups in the region.

“No matter the size of the force entering Iraq, it is rejected. It was possible to undertake this sort of prior coordination without creating circumstances which contributed to a crisis between the two countries,” al-Obeidi said.

Turkey has come under serious international criticism over the country’s actions in recent times, particularly following the shooting down of a Russian jet last month, which resulted in the death of one Russian pilot.

The incident sparked a rebuke from fellow NATO member states, and led Russian President Vladimir Putin to label Turkey as “accomplices of terrorists.”

Russian Intervention Shatters Turkey’s Neo-Ottomanist Dreams For Syria.

Russian Intervention Shatters Turkey's Neo-Ottomanist Dreams For Syria.

Russian Intervention Shatters Turkey’s Neo-Ottomanist Dreams For Syria.

Since the Arab Spring of 2011, Turkey’s foreign policy has been focused on Syria and on the ousting of its ‘Alawite President Bashar Assad, who Turkey hoped would be replaced by a like-minded Sunni ruler from the Muslim Brotherhood.

During the 13 years of its rule, Turkey’s government, led by the Justice and Development Party (AKP), steered the country away from its traditional alliance with the West and towards the Middle East and the Islamic world, claiming historic hegemony over, and responsibility for, the countries of the region – a role that Turkey sees as its Ottoman legacy.

President [formerly PM] Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Prime Minister [formerly FM] Ahmet Davutoglu designed a neo-Ottomanist, expansionist and foreign policy that involved grand aspirations to become the region’s main superpower.

They supported Islamist jihadist factions in many countries, incurring sharp criticism from the governments of Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Iraq and especially Syria, where they played a major role in sparking and escalating the civil war.

The AKP government allowed free passage to thousands of jihadi fighters into Syria, and provided material and logistic support to radical organizations that are fighting the Assad regime, including ISIS, Jabhat Al-Nusra and Ahrar Al-Sham –with the exception of the Kurdish forces, whom Turkey terms “terrorists” despite their important role in fighting ISIS.

After Turkey, a NATO ally, finally opened its strategically important Incirlik airbase for the use of coalition forces in July 2015, the U.S. and the West turned a blind eye to Turkey’s aggression against the Kurds, and agreed to most of Turkey’s demands,[1] including by supporting its program for training and equipping an opposition force in Syria to fight both ISIS and the Assad regime– a project that turned out to be a failure.

When the U.S. and Europe rejected Turkey’s initiative for a safe zone in Syria where Turkey would build cities to settle refugees, Turkey pressured them by allowing hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees from camps in Turkey to migrate to European countries, thus presenting Europe with a massive refugee problem.

Russia’s current involvement in Syria has definitely put an end to Turkey’s safe-zone plans. Turkey’s opposition parties, as well as its independent media, have for years criticized Erdogan and Davutoglu’s Syrian policies as “disastrous,” yet the AKP government was confident that its plans for Syria would produce the outcome it desired.

AKP leaders treated Syria as a domestic issue, and claimed that “not a bird could fly over that country without Turkey’s approval.”[2] In August 2012 Davutoglu predicted that Assad would fall within a few weeks,[3] and in September of that year Erdogan announced that “very soon, we [Turks]will meet and hug our [Sunni] brethren in liberated Damascus, say the Fatiha [prayer] at the tomb of Salah Al-Din Al-Ayyoubi and pray together in freedom at the Emevi mosque.”[4]

‘Syrian Taliban’, Sinai crash & ‘Gladio B’ give Moscow food for thought

Russia’s intervention in Syria has whipped up feelings across the region and around the world. As soon as Russian aircraft began conducting airstrikes in Syria, Western media started complaining that Russia is bombing the wrong terrorists.[1]

After the Pentagon failed to find more than a few dozen “moderate rebels” for its much-publicized training program,[2] Russian bombs supposedly managed to find countless “moderate Syrian rebels” and U.S. officials suddenly remembered that the CIA has been running a much more effective training program than the Pentagon.[3]

U.S. government and media are still pretending that the CIA “began a covert operation in 2013 to arm, fund and train a moderate opposition to Assad” and that this secret program “is the only way the U.S. is taking on Assad militarily.”[4]

As Boiling Frogs Post exposed four years ago, U.S. covert operations started as early as April-May 2011 when a joint U.S.-NATO training camp was set up in Turkey’s Incirlik Air Base.[5]

Moscow’s intervention is now complicating efforts to hide the true extent of U.S. involvement in the conflict as well as Washington’s real objectives. Even the neocon comedians at The Daily Beast couldn’t help but wonder why CIA-trained “rebels” were fighting alongside Jabhat al-Nusra against Syrian government forces instead of battling the so-called Islamic State (ISIS).[6]

To make matters worse, Russia’s move has scuppered U.S. coalition plans for a no-fly zone in Syria, as the Financial Times so aptly put it.[7] Under the guise of establishing an “ISIS-free zone,” the United States and Turkey had been leading efforts to set up a no-fly zone and wanted to seize Syria’s Aleppo Governorate. Turkish media was already cheerfully proclaiming Aleppo as the 82nd province of Turkey before the Russians ruined everything.[8]

Although it is not exactly a secret that “an imminent move to ramp up coalition activity in Syria” forced Moscow’s hand,[9] the very same countries that are operating illegally in Syria[10] tried to claim the moral high ground when the Russian Air Force joined the fight at the request of the Syrian government.

The U.S., Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other coalition members called on Russia “to immediately cease its attacks on the Syrian opposition and civilians” and warned that Russian military actions “will only fuel more extremism and radicalization.”[11]

In case anybody had not gotten the message, a senior Qatari source told the Middle East Eye that the Russians “will be begging Qatar in 10 years time to negotiate a ceasefire with the ‘Syrian Taliban’” if they don’t back down.[12]

Both ISIS and al-Qaeda’s Syrian branch Jabhat al-Nusra also called for jihad against Russia.[13] The terrorists apparently don’t share the U.S. government’s assessment that 85 to 90 percent of Russian airstrikes are hitting “the moderate Syrian opposition.”[14]

By now, the Islamic State has probably realized that The Daily Beast cannot be trusted.[15] Instead of giving air support to ISIS fighters, the Russian Air Force is actually targeting vital supply lines from Turkey after the U.S. had allowed “these supply lines to continue flowing.”[16]

This might explain why ISIS was so eager to claim responsibility for the downing of a Russian passenger plane that crashed in Egypt‘s Sinai peninsula. According to the Islamic State’s Aleppo “province,” the plane was attacked in retaliation for Russia’s intervention in Syria.[17]

While investigators were still trying to figure out what caused the crash, a former U.S. diplomat with an interesting background,[18] who features in Sibel Edmonds’ The Lone Gladio, took the same line as ISIS and gave Russian President Vladimir Putin a little advice:

Matthew Bryza and the Kremlin clearly have a different interpretation of “truly fighting ISIS.” The Russians have no illusions about the U.S.-led campaign against ISIS and the true nature of the so-called Islamic State.

After calling the U.S.-led coalition out for “pretending” to bomb ISIS,[19] influential Russian lawmaker Alexey Pushkov recently explained that Russia is fighting for its own security in Syria because “those behind Islamic State are the same people who were in the past destabilizing Central Asia and attempted to break Chechnya away from Russia.”[20]

Pushkov’s allusion to the Pentagon-led ‘Gladio B’ operations in Central Asia and the Caucasus region is particularly interesting in light of recent reports suggesting that al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri, who participated in these operations,[21] is now taking a more prominent role in the Syrian conflict.

In a newly released audio message, Zawahiri urged his “mujahideen brothers in all places and of all groups” to join forces against Russia and the West.[22] According to unconfirmed reports, he has already sent senior al-Qaeda leader Saif al-Adel to Syria to mediate between Jabhat al-Nusra and ISIS.[23] Given Zawahiri’s background, it is safe to say that he is more interested in fighting Russia than the West.

As the U.S. and its allies are stepping up arms supplies to the non-existent “moderate Syrian rebels,”[24] the Russians might be wondering if there is any difference between the “Syrian Taliban” and their Afghan prototypes.

Syria: Aleppo-Armenian says Russian intervention ‘inspiring’

October 22, 2015 By administrator

f5628ba3bb016b_5628ba3bb01a6.thumbThe Russian air forces’ intervention in Syria inspires serious hopes in the Armenian community, an Aleppo-Armenian public figure said today, commenting on the recent developments in the country.
Speaking at a news conference, Vazgen Mesropian, the vice-president of the Social-Democrat Hunchakian Party (SDHP) of Armenia, admitted that the Syrian-Army has seen a considerable progress after the Russian operation.
“Eighty percent of Aleppo is almost liberated, so I am hopeful that the districts still remaining under terrorists’ control – who bomb also the Armenian neighborhoods from there – will be liberated in the couple of days to come,” he said.
Mesropian further hailed Syrian President Bashar  al-Assad’s surprise visit to Moscow and his meetings with President Vladimir Putin. “It was a surprise,” he said, considering the move  a positive sign.
Mesropian admitted that Syria had to rely on Russian assistance, finding itself unable to fight alone the militants’ troops of more than 1,500.
“We believe that very soon – if not in the near future, at least in the four to six months to come – those terrorists will leave, and Aleppo will be liberated. The Russian air forces kill heads of terrorist centers; this is really important as they will later liberate also entire regions,” he added
Mesropian agreed that a key concern now is over the remaining Armenians’ number, the community being considered the mother colony of Diaspora-Armenians.
He added that the local schools and kindergartens have merged, continuing their work at the Gulbenkian School of Aleppo as a safer area.
“Today, we have a total of 2,080 pupils in [the schools] of Aleppo, whereas their number topped 4,500 before the war. There are presently 7,000-8,000 Armenians remaining there, instead of the [former] 40,000. So that’s regrettable,” the Aleppo-Armenian activist said, giving assurances that most of those who have fled Armenia or other countries, will return home after peace is established.
Of the 10,000 community members who are now in Armenia, only about 1,000 work,  Mesropian added. “The rest are without a job, and those who work are mainly young people.”
“Most are waiters or businessmen who have set up a small business here. There are also others who return, as they have no means of subsistence; they have spent all their money,” he said, adding that more 100 Armenians were killed in Syria in the past four years of war.
