ECtHR releases 2014 figures: Turkey’s violations account for more than the other 46 states combined

January 30, 2015 By administrator

203628_newsdetailThe European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) conducted its annual press conference in Strasbourg on Thursday, where it was revealed that Turkey single-handedly surpassed the remaining 46 states in the Council of Europe (CoE) in terms of cases involving violations of the right to freedom of expression in 2014.

According to the data disclosed by the ECtHR, Turkey is responsible for 24 out of the 47 violations as determined by the ECtHR; only Hungary with seven infringements came anywhere near Turkey in this category.

According to the data disclosed by the ECtHR, Turkey also ranks poorly in terms of the right to liberty and security with 45 infringements determined by the ECtHR, coming second only to the Russian Federation, which has 56 violations to its name. Turkey is also the leader for violations of the right to a fair trial — as articulated in Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) — with 31 violations.

The data on countries dating from 1959 to 2014 further casts a shadow on Turkey’s reputation for respecting human rights and freedom of expression showing 248 violations of freedom of expression, 671 violations of the right to liberty and security and 801 violations of the right to a fair trial.

Armenia will act as a third party in Perincek case at ECtHR

September 26, 2014 By administrator

Turkish Workers Party (IP) leader Dogu Perincek gestures in front of his national flag and a portrait of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk during a press conference on the eve of his trial on denial of genocide 05 March 2007 in Renens. Perincek gave a speech on the Armenian genocide during a celebration of the 82nd anniversary of the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne which fixed the borders of modern-day Turkey. AFP PHOTO / FABRICE COFFRINIYEREVAN. – Armenia will be included as a third party in the “Perincek v. Switzerland, App. no. 27510/08” case to be examined at the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).

Prosecutor General Gevorg Kostanyan, who is also the Armenian government’s representative to the ECtHR, had petitioned to the court on July 20, and with a request that Armenia act as a third party in this case, informed the Prosecutor General’s Office press service.

The ECtHR Grand Chamber on Friday approved Armenia’s participation in the case.

The respective court session is scheduled for January 28, 2015. Until then, however, Armenia will submit to the ECtHR Grand Chamber, and in writing, its position on this case. And during the session on January 28, it will have the opportunity to present its position in words.

Turkey likewise is included in this case as a third party.

The Government of Switzerland recently decided to petition that the Dogu Perincek case be referred for a review by the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). On December 17, 2013, the ECtHR ruled in favor of Armenian Genocide-denying Turkish politician Dogu Perincek’s lawsuit that was filed against Switzerland. The said judgment by the ECtHR was made on the grounds of freedom of speech. In 2008, a Swiss court had convicted Perincek for denying the Armenian Genocide. Dogu Perincek is Chairman of the socialist Workers’ Party of Turkey. In addition, he heads the Talat Pasha organization, which actively fights against the Armenian Genocide’s recognition in Europe.
