A Divine Liturgy was offered Tuesday at Saint Giragos Armenian Church in Diyarbakir, Turkey, presided over by Archbishop Aram Ateshyan, Armenian Deputy Patriarch of Constantinople.
Many Armenians from around the world, including 50 pilgrims from Armenia, participated in the liturgy held in Saint Giragos church, the Armenian News-NEWS.am correspondent reported.
The mass was attended by Diyarbakir Mayor, Suri Mayor, U.S. deputy consul in Turkey’s Adana, political figures and intellectuals.
Archbishop Aram Ateshyan noted that not only Istanbul Armenians, but the residents of Diyarbakir having Armenian roots, participated in the Holy Mass. Archbishop Ateshyan also said they are praying for peace in Egypt and Syria.
Saint Giragos Armenian Church of Diyarbakir was built in 1376, in the city’s district where large number of Christians lived until the Armenian Genocide.
Saint Giragos Church was left to its fate after 1980, but Diyarbakir Armenians who now live in Istanbul established the Saint Giragos Fund to restore the church. The Fund paid 70 percent of the restoration costs, worth $2.5 million dollars, and the Diyarbakir City Hall paid the remaining 30 percent.
