Armenian president takes part in Tbilisi round-table discussion with many heads of state

May 26, 2018 By administrator

Armenian President Armen Sarkissian took part in a round table discussion titled “Cooperation For Prosperity: Strategic Planning of The Next Centennial” in Tbilisi.

The event was organized on the sidelines of the celebration of the Georgian centennial interdependence day and attended by many heads of state.

The Armenian president delivered remarks at the event, saying: “Cooperation for prosperity should be aimed at the peaceful resolution of conflicts and full partnership should become the moving force and vision of South Caucasian countries”.

The President said that the next centennial must become a period of leaving problems in the past and eliminating dividing lines in a mutually beneficial way for South Caucasus.

He said that the current realities and the dynamics of developments in South Caucasian countries allow to hope that the democratization processes will contribute to the integration of the region and establishment of sustainable peace and economic growth.

The president said he is sure that through united efforts it is possible to overcome not only economic, but political and geopolitical disagreements which obstruct cooperation, and also to establish relations of tolerance, mutual benefit and camaraderie in all sectors.

Armenian President Armen Sarkissian and First Lady Nune Sarkissian arrived in Tbilisi on May 25 at the invitation of Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili. This is the first foreign visit of Armen Sarkissian in the capacity of President of Armenia.

The Armenian President and the First Lady were invited to attend the 100th anniversary celebrations of Georgia’s First Republic.

On the first day of the visit President Sarkissian had a one-on-one meeting with Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili, followed by an expanded format meeting of delegations, the Armenian President’s Office told ARMENPRESS.

At the meeting President Sarkissian thanked for the invitation and the warm reception. President Sarkissian also mentioned that Armenia too will celebrate the 100th anniversary of establishment of the First Armenian Republic on May 28.

Sarkissian and Kvirikashvili were pleased to note the dynamically developing and yearly strengthening relations between the two friendly countries, and mentioned that they are proud of the common history, during which they’ve learned from each other and are now happy over one another’s achievements.

Both sides attached importance to the continuous development and enhancement of relations in an atmosphere of mutual trust, and maximal use of existing potential.

The sides especially highlighted partnership in the fields of tourism, energy, IT and several other sectors.

The recent political changes in Armenia were also discussed.

The Georgian Prime Minister was pleased to note the civilized and peaceful resolution of the situation and attached importance to President Sarkissian’s role and efforts in the process and noted that Georgia is interested in the stability of Armenia. In turn, President Sarkissian said that all joint programs won’t simply continue, but also expand.

“We are interested in the maximal use of the entire potential of our relations in different sectors”, the Armenian president said.

Later the President had a meeting with his Georgian counterpart – Giorgi Margvelashvili.

Speaking about the 100th anniversary celebrations both in Armenia and Georgia, the Armenian president noted that the idea of freedom, which remains the leading idea today, is at the foundation of the historic anniversaries for both peoples.

President Sarkissian characterized the Armenian-Georgian bilateral relations as “friendly and collegial” , which continue developing.

“Active intergovernmental dialogue anchored on historic base of mutual-understanding between our peoples and traditional friendship creates serious prerequisites for outlining new directions of partnership,” the Armenian president said.

The presidents also talked about the recent changes in Armenia and the prospects of development of the Armenian-Georgian ties.

Both sides expressed confidence that not only are they able to maintain the current level of relations through joint efforts, but also to boos mutual cooperation – elevating it to a new qualitative level.

During the warm and frank meeting the Armenian president also invited his Georgian counterpart to visit Armenia.

Assad: ‘Everything’ up for discussion in Astana talks

January 9, 2017 By administrator

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad announced that his government was willing to negotiate on “everything” during proposed peace talks in Kazakhstan. However, there has been no date set for the talks yet.

President Assad said that his delegation was willing to approach the negotiating table with an open mind during upcoming peace talks in the Kazakh capital of Astana, and that he was ready to discuss even his position as president. Assad added, however that his “position is linked to the constitution.”

“If they want to discuss this point they must discuss the constitution,” he said, indicating that any new constitution would have to be put to a referendum, and that it was up to the Syrian people to elect the president.

A visiting French lawmaker, Thierry Mariani, said that Assad also declared himself willing to negotiate with nearly 100 rebel groups fighting against his government. Despite his willingness to sit at the table with the warring parties, the Syrian president said that lasting peace could only be achieved in a unified country.

Details on peace talks still unclear

Syria’s biggest ally Russia had announced in December 2016 that new talks would be held in Kazakhstan following the recapture of eastern Aleppo from rebel hands earlier that month. Turkey and Iran had also agreed to participate in the talks, but details remain sketchy; it is not clear who will represent the opposition after rebel fighters suffered their biggest defeat of the war in Aleppo. The date for the talks is also yet to be announced; Turkey has suggested that the Astana talks could be convened around the last week of January.

“Who will be there from the other side? We do not yet know. Will it be a real Syrian opposition?” Assad asked during remarks made to French media, as later published by the Syrian state-run news agency SANA. Rebel groups operating under the “Free Syrian Army” banner had announced earlier in January that they had frozen any talks about their possible participation in the Astana talks due to violations of the ceasefire brokered by Turkey and Russia.

Assad also stressed that the truce was repeatedly being violated and that the Syrian army would therefore have to recapture all of Syria. Assad particularly highlighted a rebel-held area near Damascus where water supplies have been bombed out of service. He added that his government delegation was ready to go to Astana “when the time of the conference is set.”

Liberation of “Islamic State”-held territories

Assad acknowledged that the recapture of the eastern parts of Aleppo was a “tipping point” in the war, saying that he considered his military to be “on the way to victory.”

“The victory will be when you get rid of all the terrorists,” Assad said in the interview which was shown on the French networks France Info, LCP and RTL television. Syria’s president is known for using the term “terrorist” as a blanket term for anyone opposed to his government in the conflict.

Asked whether the Syrian government was planning to recapture the city of Raqqa, which is held by the self-styled “Islamic State” group, Assad said it was the Syrian army’s job to liberate “every inch” of Syrian land and all Syria should be under state authority.

“Of course it’s very painful for us as Syrians to see any part of our country destroyed, or to see any bloodshed anywhere. Every war is bad,” he said.

“Is it better to leave [civilians] under [the rebels’] supervision, under their oppression, by beheading, by killing?”

The violence in Syria has killed almost half a million Syrians since 2011 and has displaced more than half the country’s population while causing massive destruction.

How Armenian Genocide discussion failed in German Reichstag in 1916

June 4, 2016 By administrator

213922The first-ever attempt to address the mass killings of Armenians in Germany was made back in 1916 during the Genocide.

Reichstag member, the founder-to-be of the Communist Party of Germany Karl Liebknecht sent a written appeal to Bethmann Hollweg, the Reich Chancellor on December 20, 1915, to learn whether the German government was aware of the massacres of Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Empire. The response of the 26th session of the 13th convocation of Reichstag and the fierce reaction of the Reich’s members prove that humanist Liebknecht had risen an question, uncomfortable for the German government.

Armeniangenocide100.org presents Liebknecht’s written appeal and the transcript of the short discussion on the issue:

An excerpt from the transcript of 26th session of the 13th convocation of Reichstag:

President: We are passing to the agenda. The written appeals form the first part of the agenda. N 12 is the first of them. Reichstag member Dr. Liebknecht is invited to present the appeal.

Dr. Liebknecht: Is the Imperial Chancellor aware of the fact that during the ongoing war hundreds of thousands of Armenians in the allied Turkish Empire have been exiled and massacred? What measures has the Reich Chancellor taken for the need for repentance to awaken in allied Turkey, for the conditions of the Armenians left in Turkey to become worthy of human dignity, to prevent the recurrence of such disasters.

President: The Imperial Envoy, Director of the Political Department of the German Foreign Office, Dr. von Stumm is invited to answer the inquiry.

Dr. von Strumm: The Imperial Chancellor is aware that some time ago the Sublime Porte, compelled by the rebellious machinations of our enemies, evacuated the Armenian population in certain parts of the Turkish Empire and allocated new residential areas to them. Due to certain repercussions of these measures, an exchange of ideas is taking place between the German and the Turkish governments. Further details cannot be disclosed.

Dr. Liebknecht: I am asking you to give me the right to make a supplement in the request. (Excitement is observed in the courtroom)

Persident: Dr. Liebknecht is invited to make a supplement in the request.

Dr. Liebknecht: Is the Imperial Chancellor aware that professor Lepsius virtually spoke of an extermination of the Turkish Armenians…?

(The president’s ring. The speaker tries to continue talking. Call – Silence! Silence!)

President: Mr. deputy, this is a new appeal, which I cannot accept.

Dr. Liebknecht: Mr. President, please, keep to the rules of procedure.

If Mr. President listened to the appeal up to the end (excitement is observed in the courtroom), he would be able to decide whether it is a new request or not. By the way, it is noteworthy that the president was not self-willed in concluding a new appeal was being submitted, but was influenced by the audience’s reaction.

President: Dr. Liebknecht, I forbid such criticism against my regulations. (Stormy applause). We pass on to the next written appeal on the agenda…

February 19, 2016 By administrator

206442The issue of Germany’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide will be discussed on February 24, Ermenihaber.am reports citing Turkish media.

According to sources, draft resolutions on the massacres were introduced to Bundestag by the Left Party and the Alliance ’90/The Greens. The discussions are set to last 38 minutes.

To remind, the German Bundestag had characterized the massacres of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire as genocide. In order to create a comprehensive text, the German authorities and the opposition had agreed to transfer the issue to the Foreign Relations and Human Rights Committee.

Bundestag Speaker Norbert Lamert, German President Joachim Gauck, as well as Alliance ’90/The Greens’ co-chairman Cem Ozdemir have at various points spoken out on Germany’s own share in the slaughter of 1.5 million Armenians.
