Denmark fines first woman for violating ‘burqa ban’

August 4, 2018 By administrator

A 28-year-old woman has been fined for wearing a niqab at a local shopping center, in violation of a controversial new law. The ban, which took effect on August 1, prohibits full-face Islamic veils in public places.

Danish police have fined a woman for wearing a niqab in a shopping complex, local media reported.

It’s the first such fine to be issued for violating the country’s contentious law banning full-face Islamic veils in public places, which came into effect on Wednesday.

In accordance with the law, the 28-year-old was asked by police to either remove her veil or leave the public space. She chose the latter.

She was also informed she would receive a fine of 1,000 kroner ($156/€134) in the mail.

Police were called to a shopping center in Horsholm, north of Copenhagen, where the woman had become involved in an altercation with another woman, police duty officer David Borchersen told the Ritzau news agency.

“During the fight her niqab came off, but by the time we arrived she had put it back on again,” Borchersen said.

Police are going through surveillance video to determine if the other woman deliberately ripped off the niqab.

Both women have been charged with disturbing the peace, The Copenhagen Post newspaper reported.

Controversial law

The new law bans wearing a burqa, which covers a person’s entire face, or the niqab, which only shows the eyes, in public. The law also prohibits accessories that hide the face such as balaclavas, masks and false beards.

Critics see the law — approved by parliament in May — as encouraging anti-immigrant sentiments, pointing to the very small number of Muslim women in Denmark who actually wear full-face veils.

Supporters of the law argue instead that the ban enables better integration of Muslim immigrants into Danish society.

Denmark’s Parliament adopts Armenian Genocide Resolution

January 28, 2017 By administrator

The Parliament of Denmark voted 89 to 9 with 11 abstention today to adopt an Armenian Genocide resolution, according to the website of the Danish Parliament.

On January 19 the Parliament had 2.5 hours of discussion on the document brought to the agenda by Nick Hækkerup (S) , Søren Espersen (DF) , Michael Aastrup Jensen (V) , Henrik Dahl (LA) , Martin Lidegaard (RV) , Naser Khader (KF).

The document reads, in part: “The Parliament confirms its decision no. V 54 of 19 May 2015 on the tragic and bloody events that took place in eastern Anatolia in the period 1915-1923. The Danish Parliament finds that the best path to reconciliation will be an open dialogue about the story on the basis of a free and uncensored history research, including the release of all official documents from the period. The Parliament regrets that Turkish law prohibits citizens and media to use the term “genocide” about the events, and considers this to be an unreasonable restriction of both academic freedom as freedom of expression relates to the use of this term. Parliament maintains its parliamentary tradition not to issue judgments about historical events.”

  • What is the role of Denmark in 1915?

Danish state and government, in the audience during the Armenian Genocide. In particular, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and the Danish people in general are aware of the ongoing process of destroying, but Denmark is a small, neutral country, in political circles in favor of Armenians can not be serious talk of an intervention. The same applies to after the genocide. At some point, the League of Nations and some other forces, from the Scandinavian countries of Western Armenia / Eastern Armenian survivors of the massacres in Anatolia and wants to take responsibility for the military and humanitarian. But this is not a realistic request. Scandinavian countries, they simply do not anticipate that such a responsibility and response, ‘no thanks’ is happening.

  • What is the reason for this attitude?

Military power was weak because of the Scandinavian countries. Experienced and highly motivated against Turkish troops in Anatolia, a fact that can not be chance. Would matthiasdefeat, Denmark, Sweden and Norway governments knew. All of the West, we can say that the know. But Britain, Russia and France to win the war, more a matter of priority. In addition, Eastern Anatolia and Syria, in 1915 to stop the massacres and death is very difficult to intervene on behalf of, or even a place impossible. Already IT produced Der Zor to complete the destruction process of selecting such a remote area is not a coincidence. But the Ottoman Empire as an ally of Germany has a lot to do to stop the genocide but they also wanted to win the war first.

  • Danish people or the attitude of the officials in the Ottoman Empire, those of the states a bit different is not it?

In the course of World War I, Denmark and other Scandinavian countries, we look at the movements, the situation is somewhat different. Missionaries, aid workers, diplomats and other people who worked in the Ottoman Empire, acting as savior and witnesses are. When they returned to the country is increasing awareness about this issue and are collecting money for charity.
