Iraqi Kurdistan: Anti_Barzani KRG govt demonstrations renewed

January 20, 2016 By administrator

Anti-KRG-protests-in-Said-Sadiq-Iraqi-Kurdistan-Jan-20-2016-nrtSAID SADIQ, Kurdistan region ‘Iraq’,— Angry demonstrators took to the streets of Said Sadiq in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region’s east on Wednesday, as renewed anti-KRG government protests threaten to further destabilize the region.

A group of close to 150 demonstrators began throwing stones at local offices of the Barzani-led Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Kurdistan Islamic Party (KIU) and Kurdistan Islamic Group (KIG) in the town, NRT reported.

A stone-throwing protesters were prevented by Kurdish police from attacking a KDP building and six people were injured as a result of the disputes.

Protesters then burned tires, blocking a main road linking the town with Penjwen, some 20 kilometers east of Sulaimani, before moving to the mayor’s building.

Demonstrations in Said Sadiq followed similar protests in the town of Darbandikhan on Monday where locals demanded the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) pay government employees’ salaries which have been delayed nearly four months.

KRG officials have blamed an ongoing economic crisis for chronic delays in salaries that began in 2014. Erbil increased independent oil exports from the region in an effort to make up for delayed payments.

Meanwhile the spokesman of Change (Gorran) Movement, stated that the movement supports peaceful protests against a government decision to decrease salaries of its clerks.

Shoresh Haji said after reading a statement denouncing the decision that his movement is against the decisions and supports peaceful rallies against it.

Little progress has been made in in catching up on salaries for government employees, sparking protests throughout the region.

In October 2015 thousands of people demonstrated against KRG and KDP in Sulaimani city and several other Kurdish towns, demanding payment of their salaries from KRG and that KDP leader Massoud Barzani to step down. Several local KDP headquarter buildings were set on fire by the protesters.

Barzani has been accused by critics of amassing huge wealth for his family instead of serving the population. Barzani’s son is the Kurdistan region’s intelligence chief and his nephew Nechirvan Barzani is the prime minister.

Vancouver, welcome refugees Rally

Vancouver, welcome refugees Rally

Thousands have turned out in Downtown Vancouver to lend their voices to world-wide calls of support for Syrian refugees fleeing the crisis in their homeland.

The Syrian refugee crisis became personal for many last week when a moving photograph of a drowned Syrian boy face down in the sand of a Turkish beach circulated on social media.

On Sunday, the Pope pledged that each parish in the Vatican would take in a refugee family and called on European Catholic parishes and other religious institutions to do the same. Immigration Minister Chris Alexander said last week the government has already resettled nearly 2,300 Syrians and 22,000 Iraqis and has further plans to accept 23,000 Iraqi and 11,300 Syrian refugees.

The rally in Vancouver is one of several happening across the country this weekend.

Germany: Thousands march against anti-Islam ‘Pegida’ movement

January 6, 2015 By administrator

0,,18171905_303,00German citizens gathered by the thousands in several demonstrations against the anti-Islam movement “Pegida.” Politicians said they were proud of the large numbers of people supporting immigrants. Report DW

Citizens thronged to streets in German cities to protest the anti-Islam movement “PEGIDA,” members of which gather nearly every Monday to rally against a perceived Islamization of Western countries.

The Mayor of Stuttgart in Germany’s southern state of Baden Württemberg, Fritz Kuhn, expressed “pride and joy” at the large numbers of anti-PEGIDA demonstrators, saying it was a clear statement against the marginalization of immigrants and for integrating refugees into German culture.

“Refugees are welcome in Stuttgart,” Kuhn said, adding that Stuttgart was no place for people who discriminated against others. Kuhn also appealed to people of other cities to not give in and “become a tool for right-extremist Neonazis.”

Protesters were also gathering in other German cities to rally against PEGIDA- an acronym for Patriotic Europeans against the Islamization of the West.

The cathedral in Cologne, one of Germany’s most prominent landmarks, announced that it would switch off its floodlights during the PEGIDA’s anti-Islam demonstrations on Monday, to challenge xenophobic sentiments.

Redefining Germans’

Meanwhile, German authorities expressed concern about growing support for PEGIDA. The German Police Union (GdP) warned that officers deployed in border areas had observed growing numbers of immigrants.

The Union demanded that German politicians acknowledge the country as an immigration country and create the required infrastructure. This would include accommodating the refugees and a speedy and just process for asylum seekers.

Researchers of German political parties in the parliament have also asked for a new orientation for Germany. Migrants should be able to find a place as equal citizens, Werner Schiffauer, head of the Council of Migration told German news agency dpa.

“It is important that we redefine the word, “We Germans,” Schiffauer said.
