Breaking News: Turkey lodges WTO complaint against US tariffs

August 20, 2018 By administrator

Turkey has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against US tariffs on Turkish steel and aluminum products.

“Turkey has requested WTO dispute consultations with the United States concerning additional import duties imposed by the United States on steel and aluminium products. The request was circulated to WTO members on 20 August,” the WTO said on Monday.

In its petition to the WTO, Turkey said the US violated free trade rules when it initially imposed tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum imports in June for most countries. Doubling them is an additional violation, according to Ankara.

On August 10, US President Donald Trump doubled steel and aluminum tariffs on Turkey, up to 50 and 20 percent, over the arrest a US citizen. American pastor Andrew Brunson is being held on terrorism charges in Turkey, facing up to 35 years in prison for his alleged role in a failed coup in 2016.

Under WTO rules, Ankara and Washington now have 60 days to settle the dispute through negotiations. If talks fail, the WTO will decide the dispute.

Swedish lawmakers file genocide complaint against Erdogan

July 12, 2017 By administrator

Five Swedish lawmakers have filed a legal complaint accusing Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, Local.se reported quoting AFP.

It is said that the suit filed by MPs from the Left and Green parties relates to the conflict in Turkey’s Kurdish majority south-east.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim is also mentioned in the suit. According to the Swedish law adopted in 2014, the country’s courts can judge cases of alleged crimes against humanity regardless of where they have been committed or by whom.

If prosecutors decide to launch an investigation, Erdogan could risk an arrest warrant in Sweden, the lawmakers said.

The lawmakers also hope that their colleagues from other European countries would follow their lead.

Baghdad says it will lodge a formal lawsuit against Ankara with the United Nations Security Council if claims are proved right that the Turkish government is involved in oil smuggling with the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group, the Iraqi Defense Ministry says.

“If the Iraqi government receives enough evidence and details, without any hesitation it will file a protest at the UN Security Council and all other relevant international bodies,” said Naseer Nuri, the ministry’s spokesman, in a phone interview with Russia’s Sputnik news agency on Wednesday.

Nuri added that some “general information” regarding smuggling of Iraqi oil by tankers to certain countries, including Turkey, was already available.

“There is evidence, satellite photos and security services’ reports which confirm that Daesh smuggles oil to Turkey. This oil is used to fund Daesh,” he further said.

Earlier in the day, during a press briefing for the international media held in the Russian capital Moscow, officials of the Russian Defense Ministry announced that they have concrete evidence that the Turkish government was involved in the illegal smuggling of oil from territories held by the terror group in Syria and Iraq.

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov slammed Ankara for being the main consumer of the oil “stolen from its rightful owners, Syria and Iraq,” and said that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his family were involved in this “criminal business.”

The Turkish leader, who was on a visit to Qatar on Wednesday, also accused Moscow of slander, saying, “No one has a right to engage in slander against Turkey by saying that Turkey is buying oil from Daesh.”

He had earlier said that he was prepared to step down if accusations by Russia that Ankara has traded oil with Daesh were confirmed.
