Cem Ozdemir and German Bundestag Accept Delivery of 2016 ANCA-WR Freedom Award through EAFJD in Berlin

Cem Ozdemir and German Bundestag Accept Delivery of 2016 ANCA-WR Freedom Award through EAFJD in Berlin

Los Angeles, CA – Earlier today, European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy (EAFJD) also known as ANC-Europe Chair Kaspar Karampetian and EU Affairs Officer Heghine Evinyan visited Berlin to personally deliver the Armenian National Committee of America – Western Region (ANCA-WR) 2016 Freedom Award to German Parliament Member Cem Ozdemir and the entire German Bundestag. Also delivered were congratulatory certificates of support and solidarity from various American federal, state and local elected officials and bodies, including the California State Legislature, and the County and City of Los Angeles.  Ozdemir and the Bundestag were honored during the 2016 ANCA-WR Annual Gala back in October for their courage in resisting pressure from the government of Turkey to introduce and pass a resolution formally recognizing the Armenian Genocide as well as Germany’s complicity in this crime against humanity.

Upon receiving the award, the Green Party of the German Bundestag took to Twitter to share the wonderful news “@cem_oezdemir Receives Freedom Award from @anca_wr for commitment to #Armenia. ‘I am honored, the suffering of the Armenians will not be forgotten’.”

In her remarks introducing the award in front of a crowd of over 1,000 elected officials, supporters and activists at the Gala, ANCA-WR Board Member Souzi Zerounian-Khanzadian stated, “630. That’s the number of members of the German Bundestag. Mr. Ozdemir attained a majority of votes out of 630 members of Parliament, standing up against threats both to his government and himself, and relieving his government of the gag rule Turkey had imposed on them. The U.S. Congress is comprised of 435 members, 195 less than the Bundestag, yet the Speaker of our House of Representatives and speakers before him have cowered at the idea of bringing the Armenian Genocide to a floor vote. Our Presidents have cowered behind cheap excuses, refusing to address the issue of the Armenian Genocide.

“When the coup took place and President Erdogan used excessive force, the White House did not reprimand or comment. When Turkey provided assistance to ISIS, the U.S. still stood by Turkey. For fear of what? That the Ambassador to Turkey will be recalled? It only took 127 days before the German ambassador was returned; France and other countries have gone through the same routine,” continued Zerounian-Khanzadian.

In his remarks, Ozdemir noted, “The fight for minority rights has been a cornerstone of my career in the past. …Since then we have seen commemorations of the Genocide and academic conferences on the subject in Turkey. What we have not seen, unfortunately, is any movement on the political level. Instead, the Turkish government is putting more and more pressure on the Turkish civil society that so bravely started the debate about the genocide. This is why we, as members of the German Bundestag, wanted no longer to wait for movement in Turkey.  However, the most important motivation for us to act now was the fact that Germany was guilty too. The German Kaiserreich was the closest military ally of the Ottomans at that time. Through diplomats, through missionaries they were well informed about what was going in Turkey at that time. Yet they decided not to intervene and let over one million innocent people die.

“The resolution clearly recognizes co-responsibility of Germany, even speaking of guilt. The fact that the Bundestag almost as a whole embraced the Armenian Genocide resolution shows that Germany is ready to accept this dark chapter of its history. The award you are giving me means a lot to me. It will serve as a reminder that we need to learn from the past in order to do what’s right in the present. Unfortunately, we still live in a world full of conflicts and violence. When I think of Syria, I also think of how places like Aleppo and Deir el-Zor — one hundred years ago these were the destinations of those Armenians who survived the death marches. Now Christians and countless more people in the Middle East have to flee again. So we still have a lot of work to do to make this world a better place for all of us,” concluded Ozdemir.

Cem Özdemir to address Hrant Dink commemorations in Canada

January 12, 2017 By administrator

The co-leader of Germany’s Green Party Cem Özdemir—a German Member of Parliament of Turkish origin and one of the initiators of the Armenian Genocide resolution

The co-leader of Germany’s Green Party Cem Özdemir—a German Member of Parliament of Turkish origin and one of the initiators of the Armenian Genocide resolution that was approved by Germany’s Parliament (Bundestag) on June 2, 2016—will be the keynote speaker at events in Toronto and Montreal, commemorating the 10th anniversary of Turkish-Armenian editor, journalist and columnist Hrant Dink’s assassination, The Armenian Weekly reports.

Several community organizations in Toronto have come together for the past 10 years to remember the former editor-in-chief of the bilingual Turkish-Armenian newspaper Agos and to honor his legacy.

Speaking to the Armenian Weekly, chair of the organizing committee Raffi Bedrosyan said that the commemorations are not merely a remembrance, but rather a way for the community to continue Dink’s pursuit for justice. “Remembering Hrant Dink on the anniversary of his assassination is not simply commemorating a slain Armenian journalist. By remembering, we continue his journey toward reconciliation and justice regarding the Armenian Genocide. We also help realize his vision of dialogue between Armenian and Turkish people—a dialogue that is based on truth and a common body of knowledge,” Bedrosyan said.

Many influential figures have attended commemorations in Toronto honoring Dink over the years, including Turkish-German scholar Taner Akçam; lawyer, writer, and human rights activist Fethiye Çetin; and prominent Turkish journalist and writer Hasan Cemal. “These people share Hrant’s vision and break all taboos in Turkey. They stand against the denial of the truth about the Armenian Genocide,” Bedrosyan explained.

Dink was assassinated outside of his Istanbul office on January 19, 2007. He had written and spoken about the Armenian Genocide extensively, and was well known for his efforts for reconciliation between Turks and Armenians, as well as advocating for human and minority rights in Turkey. At the time of his murder, Dink was under prosecution for violating Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code and “denigrating Turkishness.” His assassination sparked huge national protests and outrage both in Turkey and internationally.

This year’s keynote Cem Özdemir was a leading force behind the German Parliament’s June 2016 resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide and acknowledging German responsibility in not preventing the genocide committed by Ottoman Turkey—Germany’s WWI ally. Born in Bad Urach, West Germany, Özdemir is ethnically Turkish—his family emigrated from Turkey to Germany as “guest workers.”

The commemoration events will take place in Montreal on January 21, at the Montreal Armenian Community Center, Homenetmen “Gamk” Hall, and in Toronto on January 22 at the Armenian Community Center of Toronto.

Cem Ozdemir: Germany and EU should not be susceptible to blackmail by authoritarian rulers like Erdogan

May 21, 2016 By administrator

Cem OzdemirYEREVAN. – Bundestag is expected to hold debates on the Armenian Genocide resolution on June 2. Armenian News-NEWS.am talked to Cem Ozdemir, co-chairman of the German political party Alliance ’90/The Greens who is supporting recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

Bundestag will discuss the Armenian Genocide resolution in June. After heated discussions, the Greens withdrew the draft resolution to review the document. What changes have been made? Is “genocide” term mentioned in the document?

When we were discussing the Armenian genocide issue in Bundestag last time, chairman of the Chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group Volker Kauder shook my hand and assured me that we would make a joint statement. We clarified that the statement would contain the following points: a. yes, it was a genocide; b. yes, Germany had its share of responsibility; c. we will support reconciliation between Armenia and Turkey. Our agreement is in force and is the key point of a joint statement that we want to adopt on June 2.

What are your personal expectations? Will Bundestag adopt the resolution this time?

I am very optimistic that this time it will be put to the vote. However, it is more important to vote on a resolution that mentions precise words. We have been working on it for over a year. We have been holding talks for a long time, and I am pleased that we are on a good track now.

Turkey pressed EU to interfere with the “Aghet” concert project of the Dresden symphony orchestra.  Olaf Zimmermann, head of the German Cultural Council, said it’s yet another case of Turkey’s inappropriate interference abroad. How strong in your mind is Turkey’s influence on Germany? Do you think the influence is the reason that the Armenian Genocide resolution has not been adopted by Bundestag so far?

You can see the result: the Armenians, Syrians, Assyrians, Chaldeans and Pontic Greeks, who made up a quarter of the population of the Ottoman Empire before the genocide, make only small minority groups in today’s Turkey.  Whatever Turkey calls the events, everyone can get an idea. Therefore, the Turkish government is making a mockery of themselves when trying to press the Dresden symphony orchestra or even the German Bundestag to accept their interpretation of history. Neither Germany, nor the EU should be susceptible to blackmail by authoritarian rulers such as Erdogan or Putin. The result is increasingly the opposite, namely more and more people are getting interested not only in the fate of the Christians in the former Ottoman Empire, but also in the Muslim world today.

The director of the Dresden symphony orchestra and other prominent cultural figures called on to recognize the genocide in a letter sent to Bundestag this week. My impression is that the case of “Aghet” will encourage certain colleagues in the Bundestag to vote for the recognition on June 2.
