ACTION ALERT: ANCA Launches Grassroots Campaign to Protect Garo Paylan

May 7, 2016 By administrator

protectpaylan_graphicWASHINGTON—Citizens concerned about the safety of Garo Paylan, a member of the Turkish Parliament who has come under violent attack due to his Armenian identity and the free expression of his views, can now call upon the State Department, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch to speak out in his defense, using the Armenian National Committee of America’s dedicated portal: www.anca.org/Paylan.

Videos of attacks on Mr. Paylan, in the Turkish Parliament and Constitutional Commission, have gone viral, and have been featured on major media outlets. With one click, advocates can write to Tom Malinowski, State Department Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor; Ken Roth, Executive Director of Human Rights Watch; and Margaret Huang, Interim Executive Director of Amnesty International – USA. In their letters addressed to these three officials, supporters of Garo Paylan’s safety call for “public alarms” to be raised over the escalating threats and acts of violence directed against him. The letters specifically call for a forthright condemnation of those who seek to intimidate and incite hatred against Paylan.

Earlier this week, the ANCA called upon U.S. Ambassador to Turkey John Bass to publicly voice official U.S. concern regarding the safety of Garo Paylan. In the May 3rd letter, ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian compared Paylan’s persecution to that of noted Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, who was gunned down in broad daylight in 2007. “Prior to his [Dink’s] cold-blooded murder, the ANCA had called for an open expression of U.S. concern for his safety. Sadly, none was forthcoming. The only public words raised in his defense were those eulogizing him after his death,” noted Hamparian.

Triumphant Russian Campaign in Syria ‘Like Knife in the Heart’ for Erdogan

November 28, 2015 By administrator

1030684901Ankara’s decision to shoot down a Russian bomber over Syria was not spontaneous. Some agreement by the Turkish government may have played a key role, Russian political analyst Andranik Migranyan said.

A number of economic and political reasons may have provoked Turkey to shoot down a Russian warplane over Syria. It is also possible that the personality of Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan who considers himself a “neo-Ottoman leader” of the Muslim world also played a part.

But the key factor was Erdogan’s assurance he would be covered by his powerful sponsors, Russian political analyst professor Andranik Migranyan said.

Erdogan Shot Himself in the Foot: Russia Has Means to Punish Turkey for Downing of Su-24 Bomber

On November 24, a Turkish jet shot down a Russian Su-24 bomber over Syria. Russian President Vladimir Putin described the incident as a “stab in the back carried out by accomplices of terrorists.” In turn, the Russian government is now working on responsive measures to this act of aggression by Turkey.

“Probably, besides economic, political, geopolitical or Erdogan’s personal interests, there was another factor which played a key role. Erdogan is an ambitious politician but he is not crazy,” Migranyan told Sputnik Radio.

According to the expert, that key factor is a number of foreign agreements made by Ankara. The decision to attack the Russian aircraft was not spontaneous, he added.

“It seems like the Turkish government prepared public opinion for such an incident in advance. Earlier Turkey reported several times that Russian aircraft violated the Turkish airspace. I can’t rule out that there were talks – at some level – on shooting down one Russian plane or more,” Migranyan claimed.

“For Erdogan and for some Gulf nations which sponsor terrorists, the triumphant Russian operation in Syria is like a knife in the heart. And that’s a problem both for Turkey and Washington,” the analyst underscored.

Migranyan said it may have been a temptation for Washington to spark a conflict between Moscow and Ankara.

“Now, the US Congress, especially the Republicans, is criticizing Obama for his weak leadership and inability to take decisive steps. They say Russian and Putin take all. It would be so tempting to spoil the Russian operation in Syria and spark a clash between Russia and Turkey. For the first time in the last 100 years, Turkey has challenged Russia. That couldn’t happen without any foreign agreements by Ankara,” he concluded.

March 7, 2015 By administrator

greece-help-kobaneA campaign for solidarity with the people of Kobane, which was launched in Greece, has already yielded results, with considerable humanitarian assistance collected in Greece reaching Turkey’s southern province of Gaziantep and the nearby town of Suruç in Şanlıurfa province in late February.

The campaign’s motto was “Solidarity with Kobane means keeping life alive,” and several civil society organizations, as well as municipalities and national radio channels, actively joined the campaign in Turkey’s Aegean neighbor. The Sto Kokkino radio station, an initiative called “Solidarity for Everybody,” the PRAKSIS addiction treatment center, and the Civil Servants Union were among those who participated in the campaign.

Ultimately, 13 tons of staple foods, 124 large boxes of drugs, 1,400 packages of medical material, and 1,000 new blankets were taken to Turkey by a 23-person delegation from Greece.

The delegation that arrived in Istanbul on Feb. 23 proceeded to Şanlıurfa on the same day. The first part of the assistance was handed over to officials from the Turkish Red Crescent Society (Kızılay) in Gaziantep and the largest part of the assistance was taken to Suruç, where it was handed over to officials.

“We once more thank everybody who has joined this campaign and we convey the most true-hearted feelings of those from Kobane to whom this assistance has reached,” a representative from the delegation told the Hürriyet Daily News ahead of their departure for Athens.

Throughout the five days they spent in Southeastern Anatolia before returning to Athens, the delegation made contact with politicians, local administrators, municipalities, civil society organizations, and associations, while also visiting refugee camps in the region hosting Syrian people.

Diyarbakır Co-Mayor Gültan Kışanak, Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Diyarbakır Provincial Chair Zübeyde Zümrüt, and Feyza Abdi, a local elected deputy of Kobane who is now a refugee in Turkey, were among the individuals who the Greek group met.

ANCA launches #Save Aleppo campaign

June 6, 2014 By administrator

June 6, 2014 – 10:55 AMT

Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) launched a #Save Aleppo campaign calling President Obama to stop anti-Armenian attacks in Syria.

179624Attacks on the Armenian-populated quarters of Aleppo, Syria, have escalated in recent days, leading local authorities to designate the area a disaster zone.

The campaign aims to urge President Obama to stop the rebel bombing of innocent Christians and all civilians in Aleppo, press Turkey to allow the free flow of Euphrates waters to Syria, answer the ANCA’s concerns regarding Turkey’s role in the forced depopulation of the historically Armenian populated city of Kessab.

The continued rocket fire by rebel forces in the direction of the mostly-Armenian-populated Nor Gyugh neighborhood of Aleppo has forced officials to declare the area a disaster zone, and threatens the survival of the city’s Armenian community, Asbarez said.

The Aleppo News Agency reported that incessant rocket fire from rebel forces, a significant number of which are reportedly Turks or radical Islamists, continued in Nor Gyugh, endangering civilians and causing massive destruction.

Residential buildings in Nor Gyugh have been destroyed or partially demolished, while Armenian community centers and local businesses have been damaged as a result of continued shelling.

Nor Gyugh residents are fleeing the neighborhood, some heading toward the seaside city of Latakia, which is already overflowing with Armenian refugees from the insurgence of Al Qaeda-affiliated terrorist groups in Kessab earlier this spring. Others are seeking refuge in other parts of Aleppo that are not currently under heavy rocket fire, while some are relocating to the basement of the St. Gregory the Illuminator Church, which was damaged earlier this week as a result of the rebel attacks.

Armenian community institutions in Nor Gyugh have also sustained heavy damages, among them the Karen Jeppe Jemaran, the Zavarian and Sahakian schools, as well as the Zavarian and Sahakian kindergartens, the Armenian Catholic Holy Trinity and Zvartnots School, the Arevelk print shop, the Armenian Relief Society’s clinic and social service center and residential building that are owned by the Prelacy.

Armenian-owned businesses and stores, as well as residences are either in complete or partial destruction, making life unbearable for the citizens of the town.

It is a situation that can only be described as psychological torture, and his health is deteriorating. The International Committee Freedom and Justice for Sevan Nişanyan [Nichanian] appealed to international agencies and organizations of human rights, and invites wider public to fight for the elimination of coercion and restrictions as facing the Armenian journalist. International Committee Freedom and Justice for Sevan Nichanian [Nişanyan]

Urgent appeal to organizations of human rights

May 31, 2014

Sevan Nichanian – Armenian intellectual, a citizen of Turkey, civil rights activist, former columnist for the liberal newspaper Taraf and bilingual weekly Agos, and eminent linguist – is imprisoned in Turkey in harsh conditions of confinement since January 2, 2014 .

The severity and disproportion of the sentence against this intellectual, the continued deterioration of prison conditions, and the imminent threat of new charges and new trials led a group of representatives of civil society and intellectuals to meet and form the International Committee Freedom and Justice for Sevan Nichanian.

Our committee considers imprisonment Nichanian as a travesty of justice and an unacceptable punitive measure that threaten the right of individuals to freedom of thought. The Committee considers that the imprisonment of Nichanian is the obvious manifestation of prejudice and malice. This gross mistreatment is motivated by the fact that this is a dissident intellectual who fights against bad theories and the official historiography generated by the mind (to use that term with indulgence) of the State Turkish.

The International Committee Freedom and Justice for Sevan Nichanian called the Turkish authorities to immediately release Nichanian and to end the campaign of intimidation, harassment and cruelty against him.

The Committee appealed to international agencies and organizations with rights and invites wider public opinion to condemn these acts and to fight for the elimination of coercion and restrictions faced by Sevan Nichanian, in campaigning for freedom of Sevan.

The Committee calls on all sensitive individuals, organizations and citizens of Turkey, to support one of them, an intellectual who was a victim of relentless repressive machinery of the state, who championed multiculturalism and fought for that be able to prevail and prosper, and has been a model in this regard for his fellow citizens.

The committee believes that, in a country where illegal construction is widespread, and where almost all government facilities are built illegally, it is only a pretext to imprison an outspoken critic under the charges of violation of prohibition of construction. Sevan Nichanian is in conditions that can only be described as psychological torture, and his health is deteriorating. Therefore, the Committee requests the assistance of all international organizations of human rights to redress the situation of Sevan Nichanian by restoring his rightful freedom.
