Armenia offers assistance to Iran after earthquake

Armenia’s Ministry of Emergency Situation (MES) has reached Iranian authorities through diplomatic channels, offering assistance to eliminate the consequences of the earthquake that hit the country late on Sunday.  “We offered assistance in eliminating the consequences of the disaster through our Embassy in Iran as well as contacted the Embassy of the Islamic republic in Yerevan,” deputy head of the press department at the ministry Nana Gndoyan told Panorama.am.

In her words, the ministry’s search and rescue subdivision is brought to full readiness to dispatch once the Iranian side approves.

It was noted that the MES has established contact with Iranian Red Crescent NGO to elaborate on possibilities to provide emergency response to those suffered in the natural disaster.

According to updated data, more than 350 people have been killed by an earthquake that hit the Iran-Iraq border region late on Sunday. According to Iran’s Tasnim news agency, as many as 3,950 people have been injured. According to a crisis center set up after the quake, the strongest jolts were felt in the Kermanshah and Ilam provinces in western Iran, where the heaviest damage and the majority of victims were recorded.

To remind President Sargsyan swiftly reacted to the devastating natural disaster on Monday expressing solidarity with the people of Iran within hours of the quake.

Artsakh Government Appeals for Assistance “Please Help”

4aa00f11-60fd-4e06-a6b0-8c6f23ef916eSTEPANAKERT—The government of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic issued an appeal to all Armenians who have contacted the authorities to offer assistance as Azerbaijani aggression against Artsakh intensified.

The Government, headed by Prime Minister Arayik Harutunyan, has formed a task force to address these requests, as well as to ensure that the Defense Army’s needs are met. The task force includes:

Vice- Prime Minister of Nagorno Karabakh Republic – Artur Aghabekyan

Minister-chief of the NKR Government Staff – Levon Grigoryan

NKR Minister of Economy – Andranik Khachatryan

NKR Minister of Urban Planning – Karen Shahramanyan

NKR Minister of Labour and Social Affairs – Samvel Avanesyan

Director of the NKR State Service of Emergency Situations – Artur Harutyunyan

Director of the NKR Village and Agriculture Support Fund – Ashot Bakhshiyan

Director of Artsakh Investment Fund – Artak Mirzoyan

Ashot Bakhshiyan, who is the director of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Village and Agriculture Fund, has been placed in charge of food supplies. Director of the Artsakh Investment Fund, Artak Mirzoyan is responsible for procurement of materials.

The government staff has been tasked to address issues related to civilian evacuations from border regions and resolving other social problems.

EU to allocate € 950,000 for democracy assistance project in Armenia

179531The European Union has launched a new democracy assistance project in Armenia in an effort to develop a closer partnership with the country, Tert.am reported.

Introducing the initiative on Wednesday, June 2 Arevik Saribekyan, the British Council’s country director, the project aims to promote closer EU-Armenia ties and contribute to strengthening of democracy and effective governance. Minister of Justice Hovhannes Manukyan and the Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia Traian Hristea announced the official start of the Assistance to Armenia’s Democratic Governance 18-month project, with a total budget of € 949,670.

In his opening speech, Ambassador Hristea said that the EU – which is a key donor in the Armenia’s civil society building efforts – seeks to foster democratic governance, increase objective information exchange and promote a plurality of opinions in the country. He described the civil society as a key driving force seeking to assist in political decision-making processes.

The ambassador noted that the EU Eastern Partners are still facing restrictions in their democracy-building efforts despite their desire meet the above-mentioned targets.

The project, also focusing on media activities, will be more actively implemented in five regions: Tavush, Lori, Gegharkunik, Vayots Dzor and Syunik.
