ARMENIAN ASSEMBLY OF AMERICA WELCOMES MEGANOOSH AVAKIAN AS VIRGINIA STATE CHAIR

December 8, 2017 By administrator

Armenian Assembly Board Member Aram Gavoor, Grassroots & Development Associate Mariam Khaloyan, Virginia State Chair Meganoosh Avakian, and Executive Director Bryan Ardouny

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly) is pleased to welcome Meganoosh Avakian as the new Virginia State Chair. In her capacity as State Chair, Avakian will lead Virginia-based Assembly members and activists to educate the community on issues of priority concern relative to the security and prosperity of Armenia and Artsakh, in addition to working with local government to further strengthen U.S.-Armenia relations.

Avakian continues her involvement in the Armenian community following her time with the Armenian Network of America, Inc. (ArmNet). She is currently ArmNet National Board Chairman (2010-present) and ArmNet Washington, D.C. Chapter President (1998-present). Avakian has also worked as Program Support specialist for the Armenian American Cultural Association, Inc. from 2013 to 2015.
“I look forward to utilizing my experience to help the Armenian Assembly further its important work in strengthening U.S.-Armenia relations,” Avakian said.
The Commonwealth of Virginia has an active history of affirming the Armenian Genocide and honoring the victims. The Virginia Commonwealth recognized April 24 as “Armenian Martyrs Day” in 1990, 1996, and 2001. On March 9, 2000, the General Assembly of Virginia also adopted a resolution designating April 24 as “Virginia Day of Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1923.”
In addition, the city of Alexandria, Virginia is a sister city to modern-day Gyumri in Armenia, which was named Alexandropol in the early 20th Century. A “Sister City Exchange Program” between these two cities was spearheaded by long-time Assembly member Mrs. Rita Balian, working with former Congressman Jim Moran (D-VA) who was Mayor of Alexandria at the time. This sister city partnership began on May 16, 1990, as a meaningful demonstration of solidarity after the devastating 1988 earthquake in Armenia. Mrs. Balian also established the city’s annual Armenian Day Festival, which, in recent years, Avakian has participated in organizing. Since then, it has developed into the Alexandria International Festival, featuring Armenia among other nations and cultures.
“The Inaugural Alexandria International Festival was a great beginning to a new tradition for the City of Alexandria. I think this new multi-cultural festival will be a worthy continuation from the Alexandria Armenian Festival which was held for 21 years,” Avakian told the Assembly. “Sharing Armenian culture and history with our neighbors and community is what it’s always been about.  Our efforts resulted in a long standing friendship with the City of Alexandria calling us every year to come back and showcase our rich heritage,” she added.
Avakian graduated from George Mason University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management and Marketing. She is a Software Test Engineer with KT Consulting Inc., and is currently working on a joint project with Booz Allen Hamilton on Centers for Medicare and Medicaid.
“The Armenian Assembly appreciates Meganoosh’s commitment and enthusiasm to advancing our cause. She will be a great addition to the Assembly’s team,” Assembly Executive Director Bryan Ardouny stated.

The Armenian Assembly of America’s (Assembly) Executive Director Bryan Ardouny and Western Region Director Mihran Toumajan held a town hall briefing in May with members of the Armenian American community of Ventura County, California.

The briefing and associated lunch were generously hosted by the Thousand Oaks-based Armenian Apostolic Church of Ventura County, under the leadership of Parish Council member Dr. Razmig Krumian. Visiting pastor Archpriest Fr. Arshag Khatchadourian, Assembly Board of Trustees Assistant Secretary Lisa Kalustian, Assembly Trustees Jim and Connie Melikian, and parishioners were in attendance.

Ardouny covered a wide range of advocacy issues of priority concern to the Armenian American community, including the security of the citizens of Armenia and Artsakh, considering continued Azerbaijani acts of aggression since its escalation in April 2016. Ardouny also focused on the current Administration and U.S.-Armenia relations. He discussed the Assembly’s efforts to encourage members of the U.S. House of Representatives to join the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues, which currently has over 100 members and continues to grow.

“We thank the leadership of the Armenian Apostolic Church of Ventura County for providing an open forum to generate awareness and greater involvement on issues impacting Armenia, Artsakh, and the Armenian American community,” Ardouny said.

Toumajan complemented Ardouny’s presentation by covering some of the Assembly’s statewide activity, including its testimony in support of California State Assembly Bill 1597, the “Divestment from Turkish Bonds Act,” introduced by State Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian (D-46). Toumajan also noted the Assembly’s testimony in support of California State Assembly Bill 1399, the “Pupil Instruction: Genocide” bill, also introduced by Assemblymember Nazarian, which would require California’s Commission on Teacher Credentialing to convene a working group to develop program standards for the issuance of a recognition of study in genocides and atrocity crimes. Additionally, an Assembly delegation participated in the Capitol Advocacy Day initiative in Sacramento on April 17, organized by the California Armenian Legislative Caucus.

Earlier this year, the Assembly Western Region Office organized an in-district meeting in Oxnard, CA involving constituents of Armenian Caucus Member Congresswoman Julia Brownley (D-CA) and members of her district staff, including Grants and Special Projects Coordinator Talin Sardarbegians and District Director Carina E. Armenta. The Armenian Apostolic Church of Ventura County is located in California’s 26th Congressional district, represented by Congresswoman Brownley.

“As more and more Armenian Americans continue to move to Ventura County, our church community is pleased that it can count on the Armenian Assembly of America to conduct briefings and arrange meetings with elected officials for constituents.  We look forward to having an ongoing partnership with the Assembly,” stated Dr. Krumian.

Armenian Assembly of America releases statement on Armenia’s parliamentary elections

April 4, 2017 By administrator

The Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly) is encouraged by the initial report of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly (OSCE PA), the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), and the European Parliament (EP), which noted that the elections were “well administered and fundamental freedoms were generally respected” with the election day “generally calm and peaceful but marked by organizational problems and undue interference in the process, mostly by party representatives.” The Assembly congratulates the people of Armenia for its participation in the election process with voter turn-out of over 60 percent.

The statement released by the Assembly reads: “The Republican party won 49.12% of the votes; “Tsarukyan” bloc came second with 27.32%; “Yelq” (Exit) bloc came third with 7.77%; and ARF-Dashnaktsutyun scored 6.57%. Other parties and blocs running for the elections failed to meet the threshold with Armenian Renaissance Party scoring 3.71%; “ORO” bloc with 2.07%; “Armenian National Congress – HZhK” bloc with 1.65%; Party of Free Democrats with 0.94%; and the Communist Party getting 0.75%.

Armenia’s election process stands in sharp contrast to its neighbors. For example, in Azerbaijan its authoritarian president recently appointed his spouse as vice president and suppresses all opposition parties. In Turkey, Erdogan’s authoritarian regime continues its crackdown against opposition leaders and wide-scale imprisonment of journalists. Armenia also compares favorably to the other countries which emerged from the Soviet Union,” stated Assembly Co-Chairs Anthony Barsamian and Van Krikorian. “As Armenia makes further advances in its democratic institutions, we strongly urge the government to address the irregularities cited, including that of vote buying and pressure on voters.”

“Yesterday’s elections marked a first step towards establishing a new political system in Armenia, but change cannot happen overnight,” said Ignacio Sanchez Amor, Special Coordinator and leader of the short-term OSCE observer mission and Parliament Member from Spain. “Reform is a never-ending process, and I encourage the parliamentary majority and the new government to continue their efforts to transform the country’s political culture, in partnership with the opposition, civil society and the international community.”

In November 2016, the United States, European Union, United Kingdom, and Germany pledged to fund concrete measures designed to improve confidence in the election process and help prevent fraud in Armenia’s parliamentary elections. U.S. funding supported agreements signed by the Armenian government and three leading opposition parties on voting conduct for the April 2017 elections. Funds went toward equipment required for live online broadcasts of voting and ballot counting, as well as electronic verification of voters’ identity, and other amendments to Armenia’s Electoral Code.

The Assembly strongly encouraged the U.S. government to support this initiative considering its importance to strengthening the democratic process in Armenia. At the time, the Assembly Co-Chairs stated: “The Armenian Assembly commends the U.S. and the EU for providing financial assistance to support this initiative to further the rule of law in Armenia. We are nonpartisan in both the American and Armenian contexts but this type of support to improve confidence in the democratic process serves us all.”

Established in 1972, the Armenian Assembly of America is the largest Washington-based nationwide organization promoting public understanding and awareness of Armenian issues. The Assembly is a non-partisan, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt membership organization.

January 20, 2013 By administrator

Today the Armenian Assembly of America (AAA) has sent a congratulatory address to Barak Obama on the latter’s second inauguration and has called on resuming the relations with the American – Armenians and to meet the heads of the community till the end of April 24, the official site of AAA reports.

“We congratulate you on being re-elected on position of the US President and welcome your inauguration and restate on behalf of 2 million US Armenians our interest in cooperating with your administration,” the congratulatory address states.

AAA has also launched a campaign of electronic letters referring to the question posed to US president Obama which said, “When the promise on recognition of Armenian Genocide will be fulfilled?”

“There is time, and you can keep your promise on April 24,” the letter said.
