Armenia not anti-Semitic country, head of Jewish community says

June 5, 2014 By administrator

Head of the Jewish community in Armenia Rima Varzhapetyan intends to address an open letter to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).

Anti-DefamationAccording to an ADL report, Armenia is the most anti-Semitic member of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), with 58% of the population harboring anti-Semitic attitudes.

“The Jewish community, as a national minority, has never been maltreated in Armenia. There is a synagogue here. And the issue of Israel recognizing the Armenian Genocide is our only concern because it is a cause of debates inside Armenia. It is commonly understood, though, that Israel will not recognize the Armenian Genocide for security reasons. But it is universally recognized at the level of people’s diplomacy, and it is people’s wish that the problem be resolved,” Varzhapetyan said.

“We are indignant at the poll results. We do not know anything about the respondents. The question may have been ‘Do you love Jews?’ or ‘Why do not Jews recognize the Armenian Genocide?’”

Although the Jewish community in Armenia has officially registered 700-800 members, many more Jews are living in Armenia.

“They are mostly mixed marriages and do not consider it necessary to register their national identity. But all of them take part in different events. So we can speak of a Jewish community of several thousand people in Armenia,” Varzhapetyan said.

Jews have been living in Armenia for centuries, and although many of them have emigrated to Israel, they regularly visit Armenia, and even bring their children here.

What plays Vladimir Putin? Ara Toranian

June 2, 2014 By administrator

The Russian president is it a force of nuisance or proposal for Armenia? September 3, 2013, Vladimir Putin weighed its weight arton100384-480x271to prevent the signing of the Association Agreement between Armenia and the European Union which they had worked for four years. Meanwhile, he imposed his accession to the Eurasian Union under construction with Kazakhstan and Belarus. However, on May 29, Putin signed the agreement provided in Astana with these two countries, while in Armenia saw excluded. What has happened then between?

Kazakh president, who from the beginning had reservations about entering Armenia in the Eurasian Union in the name of solidarity with Azerbaijan, has developed a series of obstacles before it. He first denied any economic development that would make it more bearable this association with more powerful it, especially energetic states. But above all, he demanded – at the express request of Baku – a customs barrier is established between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh in order to maintain the ostracism of the Armenian territory was liberated from Turkish Azerbaijani. This injunction, which however goes against the Putin asserted willingness to join Armenia in the Eurasian Union, has left the Kremlin no apparent reaction. And silence feeds all speculation.

What does this mean in fact? Putin, who poses as great sachem of the Eurasian Union and great rival of the West, is unable to impose its Kazakh partner in this case? Or, more cynically, it is simply being let go Armenia, leaving it in midstream, after weighing all his weight to get out of the sphere of European influence in the region? The information of 23 May 2014 on the sale of new Russian heavy weapons to Azerbaijan (over 100 tanks T_90) nourishes all suspicions. Especially, the last Azerbaijani diatribes against the West, and particularly against the U.S. position on Nagorno-Karabakh (denounced – wrongly – as pro-Armenian), suggest that Baku could s’ rely on Russia to resolve the issue, which is also an issue as to the nature of relations between Moscow and Ankara.

It is clear that Russia has always had the ambition to militarily regain a foothold in this highly strategic area on the border of Iran. Armenia is now broadly in his boot. This leaves him to renegotiate increase its share of influence on Azerbaijan, with the danger to Yerevan that dealings will be done at his expense. The risk of betrayal of Russia is indeed registered watermark in the history of Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia, as evidenced by the granting by Stalin from that territory of Armenia to Azerbaijan. And nothing seems able to resist playing a more or less identical scenario, if it is not, perhaps, any western expansion area domination Kremlin reserves – although his protests generally remain very theoretical …

It is clear from these episodes that Putin does not derogate from despotic paradigm that has always prevailed in the tsarist policy in the Caucasus. In this scheme, the role assigned to Armenia is of a captive ally and not a strong partner. And he is certainly not in the interest of regional Kremlin to abandon the appetites of Turkism, or leave completely wither (hence its preferential tariffs for the supply of gas), it does nothing that can either make him head out of the water and bring to pass his “support”. If necessary, it seems that the Russian big brother is even willing to weaken even further Yerevan to increase its length.

Seen, Armenia is still stuck between the hammer and the anvil. But the Turkish-Azerbaijani side is clearly not the only power to take advantage of this situation. What plays Vladimir Putin? And expected by Europe to establish the status of particular partnership advocated by François Hollande May 12 in Yerevan, which allow Armenia to break his isolation, loosen the grip without preventing him to sign, where appropriate, with the Eurasian Union? The question is, more than ever.

We will not have customs checkpoint with Karabakh – Armenia Economy Ministry

June 2, 2014 By administrator

June 02, 2014 | 13:01

YEREVAN. – No customs checkpoint will open between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, in the context of Armenia’s Eurasian 212267integration, Economy Minister Karen Chshmarityan stated at the National Assembly on Monday.

In response to a query on whether official Yerevan should be concerned about Eurasian Union accession without the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, Chshmarityan rhetorically asked: “And are we a part of any international organization together with Karabakh?”

In his words, it does not change anything in this case. The goods produced in Nagorno-Karabakh can be exported to the CIS, European, and numerous other countries without restriction.

The treaty on establishment of the Eurasian Economic Union was signed, in Astana on May 29, by the leaders of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. In addition, Armenia President Serzh Sargsyan participated in the meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council and offered to sign a treaty on Armenia’s Union accession by no later than June 15. Russian President Vladimir Putin, for his part, stressed the need to sign a respective document with Armenia in the shortest period of time.

Armenia president: Nazarbayev’s remark was unpleasant, but not harmful

June 1, 2014 By administrator

May 31, 2014 | 18:29

YEREVAN. – The remark voiced by President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev was unpleasant, but it will not harm Armenia’s 212117accession, President Serzh Sargsyan said during a meeting with RPA youth branch in Tsakhkadzor.

During the meeting, President Sargsyan was asked about Nazarbayev’s remark on Karabakh duirng the meeting of Supreme Council of the Eurasian Economic Union in Astana. Nazarbayev spoke about the letter by President Ilham Aliyev calling to to accept Armenia only within its internationally recognized borders.

“First of all I want to say there is no obstacle to Armenia’s accession to Customs Union. When we stated there are 2-3 issues left, we meant 2-3 technical problems regarding trade relations. As to Nazarbayev’s remark, it is wrong to speak about borders. What borders do you mean? Karabakh issue is not to be settled in Customs Union. Who said we are going to join Customs Union together with Karabakh? This cannot happen, as Karabakh, at least according to our legislation and at least in our perception, is not a part of Armenia. And, accession to the Customs Union obviously contributes to settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Of course, Nazarbayev’s remark was unpleasant, but it will not damage anything,” he said.

The congress of RPA young leaders brought together 260 members who will discuss cooperation and internal problems.
