Ambassador Ashot Smbatyan

The Berlin court has ruled that Spiegel and Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk public TV and Radio Company have been banned to spread groundless claims on Armenia’s ambassador to Armenia Ashot Smbatyan.

As reported by Armenpress, the court ruling states that the defendant, namely, Spiegel’s publisher, represented by Executive Director Thomas Hass and Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk Public Television and Radio Director, Carolla Ville, “is forbidden to be literal or meaningful on the plaintiff (or) disseminate and / or claim and / or distribute it. ”

For each case of breach of discipline, the court establishes a disciplinary sanction of up to EUR 250,000 or a disciplinary detention for up to 6 months.

Because of the urgency, the case was examined without the oral procedure.

Armenian Ambassador to Germany Ashot Smbatyan presented RAUE LLP petition office in the court.

According to a German study of the Spiegel magazine and Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk Public TV and Radio Company, German Federal Police has been investigating about arrests of Armenian mafia members for about three years, suspecting about Armenian Ambassador to Germany Ashot Smbatyan.

Ashot Smbatyan denied his involvement with the group and qualified this charge as absurd.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia noted that it is in touch with the German authorities to clarify the credibility of these allegations in the press.

Ambassador Hovhannissian’s farewell message

Ambassador Hovhannissian’s farewell message

In a few days my term as Armenia’s ambassador to USA will come to an end. After three years of a wonderful and fulfilling posting in Washington I will be returning to homeland to start a new chapter in my life.

Serving as the Armenian Ambassador to our close friend and ally has been the greatest privilege of my life. Years spent in Washington DC – a city filled to the brim with intellectual pursuit and stimulating debate – have broadened my perspective and deepened my understanding of the US and the world at large. I have learned a lot and gained priceless experience over the many years that I studied, lived and worked in this fascinating country, starting as a student at Tufts University, then as a UN staffer visiting the HQs in NY, as a Consul General in Los Angeles and, finally, as an Ambassador in Washington.

My posting in Washington coincided with profound changes in both our counties. Constitutional and then democratic transition in Armenia and the change of administration in Washington fell on difficult times for international affairs marked by new and old geopolitical challenges. Notwithstanding the transition process, the dialogue and the partnership between Armenia and USA remained active and continued to bear fruit.

The relationship between Armenia and the US is strong and has grown stronger during my time here. Beyond the chronicles of official meetings and visits, relations between our countries continued to expand in many ways – at federal, state and local levels, among cities, universities, museums and other public institutions, between the military, businesses, and, above all, among ordinary people – all creating even stronger bonds between us.

During the past three years our relations with the Congress and its Caucus on Armenian Issues intensified, resulting in the first in two decades Congressional Delegation to Armenia and Artsakh, as well as the first ever delegation of Armenia’s National Assembly to Washington. New areas of cooperation between our legislatures include the Democracy Partnership group and exchanges with California and Massachusetts State Assemblies. During this period, Washington hosted productive sessions of the US-Armenia inter-government Task Force (USATF) and the Council of the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA). Investment and business conferences were held in NY, the Silicon Valley and Los Angeles, contributing to the rise of US investments to our economy. Armenia’s partnership with the US IT industry continued to boom with hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth Armenia-made services exported to or through Silicon Valley based companies. We are finalizing plans to substantially help Armenian start-up community to get better integrated in the innovation and venture capital communities. Sales of Armenian wines in the US market soared over the last couple of years, owning to the outstanding quality of our new wines, many of which were produced through American investment.

Armenia opened its third – after Fresno and Las Vegas – Consulate in Chicago and made plans for additional consulates in several other important cities throughout USA. Our partnership with the Kansas Army National Guard and the State of Kansas continued to thrive, as we celebrated the 15th anniversary of our partnership. Beyond institutions and organizations, we also forged strong relations with individual communities throughout USA, particularly with the Evangelical Christian, Mexican and Francophone communities. It was a personal privilege for me to meet and interact with Reverend Franklin Graham and his associates. The already traditional Armenian-Mexican cultural festival of Los Angeles was another achievement that, as Armenia’s former Ambassador to Mexico, I am personally proud of.

The current year, which marks the 400th anniversary of the first Armenian settler arriving in USA, was in many ways extraordinary in terms of the exposure of the Armenian culture, arts and traditions to the American public at large. First – the groundbreaking “Armenia: Creating Home” festival on the National Mall by the Smithsonian institution, followed by the Inauguration of Saroyan’s museum in Fresno and the absolutely historic exhibition “Armenia!” by the NY Metropolitan Museum of Art. I am extremely proud and feel privileged to having had events of this magnitude during my tenure in Washington.

And of course the past three years also saw a number of great celebrations, such as Armenia’s 25th anniversary at the grand Hall of Americas, the centennial of Armenia’s first Republic in US Senate, the 25th anniversary of US-Armenia diplomatic relation at US Congress and countless celebrations of our culture, gastronomy, wines and US-Armenia friendship hosted by our cozy embassy in Washington DC.

In a few days I will be leaving Washington DC with the conviction that our relations with the US are strong and that they will weather any storms the complexity of today’s world can possibly produce. I am also a staunch believer in even closer strategic relations with United States, as our countries share values of freedom, justice, equity, fairness, faith, family, community, and many others.

I am seizing this last opportunity to express my profound admiration and love to the Armenian-American community – to thousands of individuals – activists, leaders, clergy, artists, professionals, shopkeeper and restaurateurs who I am privileged to personally know, to communities and parishes where I was wholeheartedly welcomed in Charlotte, Chicago, Phoenix, Salt Lake city, Burbank, Boston, Glendale, Miami Beach and Boca Raton, Fresno, Detroit, Denver, San Francisco, San Jose, San Diego, Watertown, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Houston, Pasadena, New York, Richmond, and many many other places throughout this wonderful land. Your commitment to Armenia and Artsakh, to our Churches and to our institutions, to our national causes, to our strong relations with USA, in addition to your ever growing volunteer spirit, social activism, incredible generosity and humanism – are a true blessing for our homeland and for our global Armenian community. I thank you for the privilege of serving you and for the rewarding life that Armenian diplomatic service has allowed me to lead.

Last but not least, my profound thanks to my past and present colleagues at the Embassy whose unwavering support, professionalism and passion made our mission truly meaningful; to my US State Department Bureau of Eurasian Affairs counterparts – who set examples of professionalism and integrity. Thank you to our supporters and followers on social media, in particular FB, where the number of our friends grew more than tenfold in the last two and a half years.

Victoria and I are also grateful to the Montgomery county school district for taking such a great care of our children, helping them to become inquisitive and self-confident young ladies.

I take my hat off to all of you!

Netherlands recalls ambassador from Turkey

Netherlands recalls ambassador

The spat between the Netherlands and Ankara stems from the Dutch refusal to allow Turkish ministers to campaign for a 2017 referendum. The Dutch foreign ministry said repeated efforts to normalize relations have failed.

The Netherlands has officially withdrawn its ambassador from Turkey, the Dutch foreign ministry said in a statement on Monday.

The ministry added that it will not allow a new Turkish ambassador in Amsterdam as long as there is no Dutch ambassador in Ankara.

Despite recent talks between the two countries, Foreign Minister Halbe Zijlstra said “we could not reach an agreement on how to normalize relations.”

The Dutch foreign ministry has “paused” talks with Turkey on resolving the matter, it said.

Turkish referendum

The withdrawal of the ambassador is a largely symbolic gesture as the diplomat has been barred from Turkey since March 2017, when relations between the two countries took a downward turn over the Dutch refusal to allow Turkish ministers to campaign in the Netherlands ahead of a referendum.

Protests erupted in Rotterdam after the Netherlands expelled Turkey’s Family Minister Fatma Betul Sayan Kayar before she could address a campaign rally of Dutch-Turkish citizens in favor of the vote which sought to expand the powers of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Armenian Ambassador in Damascus: Great desire to bolster deeply-rooted Armenian-Syrian relations

October 1, 2017 By administrator

Damascus, SANA – Respecting sovereignty of states, non-interference in states’ domestic affairs and preserving international peace and security are the characteristics of the mutual relations between Syria and Armenia since 1992.

The Armenian Ambassador in Damascus Arshak Poladian said in an interview with SANA that his country supports the resilience of the Syrian people during the war that is targeting the country, pointing out that Armenia has condemned terrorism, which targeted the Syrian people, infrastructure and institutions, as it also encouraged an intra-Syrian dialogue as a means for reaching a political solution to the crisis.

Poladian considered that the continuous work of the Armenian diplomatic institutions in Syria reflects his country’s standing by the side of Syria, pointing out to the humanitarian aid sent by his country in support of the resilience of the Syrian people.

He expressed Armenia’s desire to contribute to the reconstruction process stemming from the historic fraternal relations between the two countries, noting that the Armenian Culture Minister has offered a project for restoring the archeological city of Palmyra, which underwent fierce terrorist attacks.

He clarified that the bilateral relations have witnessed prosperity throughout the past years, and that was represented through signing some 50 to 60 agreements in different domains.

The Ambassador pointed out to Armenian’s participation in Damascus International Fair where it displayed brochures on the Armenian products and information about several companies specialized in jewelry, technology, food and iron mines.

In the educational field, the two counties signed an executive education program specialized in the higher education where the two countries exchange student missions.

Ambassador Poladian clarified that relations between the Syrians and Armenians go back to the beginning of the past century where Syria was a refuge for Armenians who  escaped the Genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Turks in 1915.

Major French companies show interest in Armenian market, Ambassador says

July 13, 2017 By administrator

Major French companies show interest in Armenian market, Ambassador says“The trade-economic relations between Armenia and France are at a low level. The commodity turnover in the two directions amounts to 50 million euros,” Jean-François Charpentier, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of France to Armenia, said at a news conference on Thursday, reports Panorama.am.

In his words, this is also conditioned by the fact that the Armenian economic market is not well known in Western Europe. “Currently the things tend to change, however a clearly marked desire to immediacy get integrated in that market is not yet observed. The positive dynamics is that major French enterprises already show interest towards the Armenian market. This is also linked with the fact that the Armenian market also entails another potential opportunity to get in touch with the Iranian market. Armenia’s membership to the EAEU can also promise possible prospects,” Mr. Charpentier noted.

The Ambassador underscored that regardless the low commercial and economic turnover, France has quite a significant presence in the Armenian economic field.

Jean-François Charpentier noted that the situation can be considered more satisfactory in terms of investments, since there are French companies operating in Armenia.

Asked whether the improvement measures taken by the Armenian Government inspires trust to the French investors to make investments in Armenia, the French diplomat noted that the Government’s trust actions are among the factors that condition the outlined interest of French enterprises towards Armenia.

Armenian Ambassador to US: Armenia and US discuss meeting at level of presidents

June 28, 2017 By administrator

Diplomats of the US and Armenia   are discussing the meeting at the level of presidents, Armenian Ambassador to the United States Grigor Hovhannissian told Sputnik.

“Now, we, the diplomats, should organize that meeting, especially now, when Armenia is going through the process of becoming a parliamentary republic,” Hovhannissian said.

“First, we should organize a meeting at the level of foreign ministers to prepare an agenda, and then we will be preparing a meeting of the Presidents.

Of course, I would like that. But everything will depend on the agenda and on how the ministers agree on,” the ambassador said, adding that the date for foreign minister’s meeting is still unknown.

Republican Party member Jon Huntsman Jr. has agreed to become the new United States ambassador to Russia, informed the US media.

A respective official statement, however, has not yet been made either from the administration of US President Donald Trump, or Huntsman himself.

Renowned American businessman and philanthropist Jon Huntsman Sr. was bestowed two state awards of Armenia and was granted Armenian citizenship, in recognition of his investments to the country.

Russia outraged by award for photo of Turkey ambassador killing

February 15, 2017 By administrator

The Russian Embassy in Ankara on Feb. 14 expressed anger over the awarding of the prestigious World Press Photo Award for an image of an off-duty Turkish policeman assassinating the Russian envoy to Turkey last year, the Hurriyet Daily News reports.

The embassy, whose ambassador Andrey Karlov was shot dead in the Dec. 19 killing, said the decision by the jury showed a “complete degradation of ethics and moral values.”

“Propaganda of the horror of terrorism is unacceptable,” it said in a statement on its official Facebook page.

The famous image was taken by Burhan Özbilici, a photographer for the Associated Press, who stood his ground as 22-year-old policeman Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş killed Karlov at the opening of an Ankara exhibition.

Jurors commended the courage of the photographer and symbolic resonance of the picture but the choice split the jury, with its president Stuart Franklin opposing the choice.

“Placing the photograph on this high pedestal is an invitation to those contemplating such staged spectaculars,” Franklin wrote in the Guardian.

The head of the foreign affairs committee of the Russian senate Konstantin Kosachev said the choice was “on the edge of morality” and asked “how many more terrorists could be inspired by this photo,” RIA Novosti reported.

Altıntaş was killed at the scene by Turkish security forces.

Authorities claimed that he could be part of the Gülen network led by the U.S.-based preacher Fethullah Gülen, who Ankara blames for the failed July 15, 2016 coup attempt. Russia, which sent an investigation team to Ankara after the killing, has yet to back this conclusion.

The street in Ankara where the embassy is located was recently renamed after Karlov.
