Deputy minister highlights 117% growth in Armenia’s agriculture

April 7, 2018 By administrator

The agricultural sector has seen a 117% growth in Armenia in the past five years, a deputy minister said on Saturday, praising the effectively developing international cooperation in both the bilateral and multilateral formats,.

Speaking at a workshop organized for journalists, Armen Harutyunyan said they have agreed on plans to launch an irrigated agriculture project in collaboration with the EU later this year.

“We are negotiating a new program with the EU for 2019-2021 to address the agriculture registers and infrastructure development. Additionally, the Ministry of Agriculture is actively collaborating with international organizations, and the Austrian Development Agency to develop organic agriculture,” he noted.

The deputy minister said that the cooperation with the EU secured a funding of €38 million, of which €20 million went to budget insurance.

Hakobyan also addressed several joint projects with the World Bank. He added that their key export destination is the Russian market which sells the Armenian honey, tea and juices.

“We are making our first steps in organic agriculture to outline a format of government support starting from 2020,” he said, not ruling out the possibility of subsidies.

Harutyunyan also highlighted the increasingly competitive value of Armenia’s agricultural produce on the European continent. “Europe is facing an increasing demand for organic products,” he said.

The official promised future government efforts to boost the exports.

Minister of Agriculture Ignati Arakelyan added that the Armenian organic honey is now being exported to China.

Russian agriculture watchdog warned Iran against transit of Turkish goods, which have been banned by Moscow.

January 17, 2016 By administrator

1030987550MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russian agriculture watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor warned Iran against transit of Turkish goods, which have been banned by Moscow, the agency’s head, Sergey Dankvert, said.

“Rosselkhoznadzor warned Iran about inadmissibility of transit of Turkish goods through the country,” Dankvert said, as quoted by the Russkaya Sluzhba Novostey radio station on Sunday.

He added that Iran was expected to start deliveries of poultry to Russia after January 20, and of diary products after February 15.

Relations between Moscow and Ankara deteriorated following the downing of Russia’s Su-24 frontline bomber over Syria by a Turkish jet on November 24.

On November 28, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on economic measures against Ankara in retaliation for the downing of the Su-24 aircraft. The decree, which entered into force on January 1, 2016, included a food import ban on certain categories of products.

Armenian Government Reports Strong Growth in Agriculture

YEREVAN (Azadutyun)— According to the Agriculture Minister Sergo Karapetian, Armenia’s agricultural output rose by nearly 12 percent to 931.4 billion drams ($1.94 billion) from January to November of 2015. This growth greatly contributed to the continued economic growth in the country.

The official figure is equivalent to more than one-fifth of Gross Domestic Product which the Armenian government expects to increase by at least 3 percent in real terms this year.

Favorable weather conditions appear to have been instrumental in the agricultural sector’s strong performance. In particular, they translated into plentiful harvests of apricots, grapes and other fruits and vegetables.

“Armenian farmers harvested almost 370,000 metric tons of wheat, up by 9 percent from 2014. For the first time in decades, Armenia satisfied more than half of its domestic demand for wheat,” said Karapetian.

The minister also reported a 65 percent surge in the physical volume of Armenian fruit and vegetable exports, the bulk of them going to Russia. They were clearly helped by the Russian ban on food imports from Europe.

Much of this sharp rise has been offset by the dramatic depreciation of the Russian ruble. Armenian wine and brandy companies, the most important buyers of domestically grown grapes, have also been hit particularly hard.

Karapetian insisted that despite their financial troubles most of the distilleries increased their grape purchases from farmers this fall. Many farmers complain, however, that they have still not been paid for their produce. Some have even staged protests, threatening to block highways in the wine-growing Ararat Valley south and west of Yerevan.

Karapetian downplayed the protests, saying that more than 82 percent of the grape farmers have already received payments. “There are still debts, but there are understandings between farmers and producers on when they will be paid off,” he told reporters.
