The German court on Tuesday rejected a request from the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which was intended to prevent the boss of a major European media groups Axel Springer, can repeat its support for a satire concerning him.
In an open letter published in one of the group’s newspapers, Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Springer, had supported the comic January Böhmermann, author of March 1 pamphlet read 31 on ZDF public television in which he treated Erdogan pedophile and bestiality.
“I find your successful poem. I laughed out loud, “wrote the group including the boss who publishes the daily Bild big draw, addressing Jan Böhmermann and declaring associate” fully “its” formulations and outrages. “
Seized by the German lawyer of Mr Erdogan, Ralf Höcker, the court of Cologne (west) on Tuesday rejected a request for interim measures of the Turkish leader, citing “fundamental right to freedom of expression,” said in a statement a spokesman for the court, Christina Harpering.
“The words of Döpfner can participate in the formation of public opinion in a debate,” she added, noting that the court had examined both the “fundamental right to freedom of expression” and Erdogan law to protect his person. The court’s decision may be appealed.
Openly outrageous and going in consciousness beyond what the German law allows the comic intended to demonstrate the absurd how the Turkish authorities had erred in attacking another text, a song released 15 days earlier on German television and criticized the undermining of civil liberties in Turkey.
The case quickly took a diplomatic turn and caused a scandal in Germany when Chancellor Angela Merkel has authorized the necessary legal action by Ankara against the comedian while authoritarian tendencies Erdogan are increasingly strongly denounced.
