Armenia President convenes National Security Council session
YEREVAN. – Armenia’s National Security Council (NSC) session presided by the President of Armenia and NSC, took place today. The results of the Shant-2015 military exercises held from September 3 to 6, specifically the work carried out in the direction of achieving the main objectives provided by the exercise’s scenario, achievements recorded, the gaps, coordination of activities and activity efficiency, etc. were discussed in detail.
Following the reports by the head of the military exercise headquarters and his deputies, Sargsyan gave corresponding instructions.
Prior to this, President Serzh Sargsyan made an introductory speech, in which he specifically mentioned that the aforementioned military exercises aimed at continuing the work carried out by the Armenian state authorities in order to resist the possible aggression of the adversary.
“We held similar military exercises of smaller volume in 2008 and 2013. But this time the exercises were held in full volume, definitely being unprecedented,” he said.
Sargsyan also noted that there is a regulation which establishes periodicity for holding each type of military exercise, and “we must all adhere to that periodicity.”
According to the president, each military exercise has at least three main goals: to check, improve and gain experience. “Each military exercise also definitely has special purposes, and according to the preliminary conclusions, Shant-2015 command and staff military exercises were held in an organized manner and achieved their goals,” he said.
Joint Russian-Armenian Air Defense Shield to Cover Middle East
(sputniknews) A joint Russian and Armenian air defense system project was launched long ago and is not connected to the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East. Nevertheless, the crisis in the region proves the necessity of such measures, political analyst Sergei Minasyan said.
“The system will comprise air defenses and Russian combat jets deployed to the Southern Military District. This would allow for monitoring the airspace far from the Armenian borders. The system will also help modernize Armenian air defenses and improve their operational range,” Minasyan told Sputnik Radio.
The deployment of air defense missile systems, radio-radars and jet fighters to Armenia will allow for protecting the airspace far from the Russian borders, including in the Middle East, he pointed out.
According to him, the initiative was launched long ago.
“It has been in the development for over 10 years. And now it’s just a coincidence with the Syrian conflict. The situation in the so-called Greater Middle East just proves that the measures are effective,” the analyst said.
Minasyan underscored that Moscow and Yerevan laid groundwork for the project back in the 1990s.
“From political and strategic points of view there have been no significant changes. The system still works. Russia and Armenia coordinate their actions in patrolling the airspace. The new joint air defense system would just be more effective,” he said.
Beirut Blasts: At Least 37 Killed, 180 Wounded in Two Suicide Explosions
BEIRUT: Two suicide bombers blew themselves up on a crowded street in a southern Beirut suburb Thursday, killing at least 37 people and wounding nearly 200 in one of the deadliest attacks to strike the country since the outbreak of the Syrian crisis, officials said.
A third suicide bomber was also killed when the second attacker blew himself up, Health Minister Wael Abu Faour told reporters, saying many of the wounded were in serious condition.
The attack during evening rush hour in the suburb of Burj al-Barajneh resembled the series of car bombs and suicide blasts carried out by Syria-based extremists targeting Shiite areas of the country in 2013 and early 2014 in response to Hezbollah’s intervention in the Syrian war.
A witness told The Daily Star that crowds of people began to gather after hearing an explosion outside a coffee stand in the neighborhood of Ain al-Sikke when a second blast went off about 30 meters away near a bakery.
The Lebanese Army confirmed that two suicide attackers were behind the attack. In a statement, it said the corpse of the third suicide bomber showed that his explosive belt was not triggered by the blast that killed him.
A photo alleged to be of the third suicide bomber broadcast on television showed him lying on the ground face up in a blue shirt with a pink Adidas logo and an in-tact suicide belt tied around his waste.
One man told television reporters that he was at home talking on the phone when he heard the first blast outside his home. He said he ran to the balcony and saw dozens of people rushing toward the area when the second bomb went off.
“I’ve been living in the suburbs all my life. I want to get out of here. It would be more honorable if I died in the sea,” he said.
A security source told The Daily Star that at least 37 people were killed and 177 wounded in the attack. The Lebanese Red Cross issued similar figures.
Television footage showed ambulances rushing to the site of the blasts to tend to the victims, with pools of blood on the roads.
Residents were seen using a vegetable cart to transport wounded, and security forces shot in the air to clear crowds that had assembled around the blast site.
Footage from outside a local hospital showed people being rushed into the hospital on stretchers and wheelchairs. Others were carried in. Some wounded arrived to the hospital on the back of scooters.
Prime Minister Tammam Salam declared Friday a day of mourning, describing the attack as “cowardly” and calling on Lebanese to unite.
“I pray that this tragedy is enough to wake politicians up so that they can put their differences aside so we can protect the country,” he said in a statement.
A defiant Speaker Nabih Berri said: “They (the attackers) want to obstruct the country, but we won’t let them do that.”

Geoffrey Robertson: Armenians can file a lawsuit against Germany
Armenians can file a lawsuit against Germany, which tolerated the Genocide, thus becoming an accomplice, Geoffrey Robertson, famous British barrister and member of the team representing Armenia in ECHR case against Perinçek told Los Angeles Public TV reporter.
According to him, he expected Armenians to initiate the reparations process long ago. Robertson also pointed out to the effective ways of doing this. Specifically, Robertson said he once blamed Armenians for not initiating measures for reparations but at last Cilician Catholicosate filed a lawsuit with Turkish Constitutional Court to return the church property which the Turks illegally took away in 1915. This, according to him, was the beginning, which he hopes will have a successful end. For the further success of the reparations process, Robertson proposed to also use the the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (CPPCG), arguing that the occurence was a crime against humanity.
In Robertson’s words, Armenians can file a lawsuit against Germany, since Germany was an accomplice in tolerating the Genocide: it could prevent it but never did that. According to him, Serbia was held liable for the Srebrenica Genocide on the same ground, since Milošević knew what was going on but didn’t take any measures. Thus, Robertson proposed to seriously think in that direction.
Referring to the comment that Turkey is one of the main NATO states the partnership with whom is important for the West, Geoffrey Robertson said that Turkey’s value in the eyes of the West is undeniable, but the historical facts are above all. According to him, Turkey can close its airports for NATO States if they acknowledge the Armenian Genocide, but the facts are undeniable.
Robertson also explained that this was exactly the reason why he named his book “An Inconvenient Genocide,” since the fact of the Armenian Genocide causes many inconveniences to the West.
