Obama’s Glendale Visit Prompts Calls to Permit Display of Genocide-Era Rug

November 26, 2013 By administrator

GLENDALE—As President Obama visits the epicenter of the Armenian community in the United States, religious and community leaders will hold a press Armenian_Orphan_Rugconference to call on the President to stop blocking the display of an Armenian Genocide-era rug woven by orphans of that crime against humanity. The rug, which took Armenian orphans 10 months to weave and has 4,404,206 individual knots, was presented to President Calvin Coolidge in 1925.

A community briefing will take place on Tuesday, November 26 at 8:30 a.m. at the Glendale Youth Center. Participating in the event will be Western Prelate Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian; Raffi Haig Hamparian, Armenian National Committee of America, National Board Member; Berdj Karapetian, ANCA–Glendale Chapter, Chairman; Armenian American Leaders

Armenian Americans across the U.S. are calling on President Obama to secure a prominent and permanent public display of a historic rug woven by Armenian Genocide orphans and presented to President Calvin Coolidge in 1925, in appreciation for U.S. humanitarian assistance in the aftermath of Turkey’s murder of over 1.5 million Armenians from 1915-1923.

The ANCA campaign was initiated last month after The Washington Post reported that a planned December 16th Smithsonian Institution exhibit featuring the rug, organized in conjunction with the Armenian Cultural Foundation and the Armenian Rug Society, was abruptly cancelled when the White House, reversing an earlier affirmative decision, refused to lend the iconic symbol of American and Armenian shared heritage to the museum.

Washington Post staff writer and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Philip Kennicott, reported, “There was hope that the carpet, which has been in storage for almost 20 years, might be displayed December 16th as part of a Smithsonian event that would include a book launch for Hagop Martin Deranian’s ‘President Calvin Coolidge and the Armenian Orphan Rug.’ But on September 12th, the Smithsonian scholar who helped organize the event canceled it, citing the White House’s decision not to loan the carpet. In a letter to two Armenian American organizations, Paul Michael Taylor, director of the institution’s Asian cultural history program, had no explanation for the White House’s refusal to allow the rug to be seen and said that efforts by the U.S. ambassador to Armenia, John A. Heffern, to intervene had also been unavailing.”

Kennicott described the controversy as “a sign of the Obama administration’s dismal reputation in the Armenian American community that everyone assumes… must be yet another slap in the face for Armenians seeking to promote understanding of one of the darkest chapters in 20th-century history.”

The White House response thus far has been vague – with National Security Staff Assistant Press Secretary Laura Magnuson offering the following comment to the Asbarez Armenian Newspaper: “The Ghazir rug is a reminder of the close relationship between the peoples of Armenia and the United States.  We regret that it is not possible to loan it out at this time.”  A statement with the same exact wording was released by the White House last week and included in Kennicott’s article.

“The White House should simply come clean,” said ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian.  “It’s time for the White House to open up about Turkey’s role, and lay out all the facts about its decision to block the Smithsonian’s exhibit of the Armenian Orphan Rug – a historic, Armenian Genocide-era work of art that speaks powerfully to the common values and shared experiences of the American and Armenian peoples.”

In a letter sent to President Obama’s Chief of Staff, Denis McDonough, ANCA Chairman Ken Hachikian reminded the White House that “upon receiving the rug, President Coolidge wrote, ‘The rug has a place of honor in the White House where it will be a daily symbol of goodwill on earth.’ I ask you, in this spirit, to remove any obstacles to the Smithsonian’s display of this historic artwork and to secure a prominent and permanent public home for this powerful symbol of America’s humanitarian values and friendship with the Armenian people,” continued Hachikian.

Placing this latest controversy in context, Hachikian noted that: “since taking office, President Obama has not only failed to recognize the Armenian Genocide, but has actively blocked Congressional legislation (H.Res.252, 111th Congress) to commemorate this atrocity and, through his Solicitor General, officially opposed efforts in the U.S. courts (Arzoumanian v. Munchener Ruckversicherungs-Gesellschaft AG) to allow American citizens to pursue Genocide-era property claims.  In addition, the Administration has regularly sent senior officials to speak at events organized by Armenian Genocide deniers, while refusing repeated invitations to simply attend Congressional observances of this atrocity.  In these areas, and, sadly, many more, the President has not simply failed to honor his pledge, but rather – in both letter and spirit – worked to fundamentally undermine and reverse the very policies he pledged to pursue.”

According to Dr. Hagop Deranian, the Armenian orphan rug measures 11′7″ x 18′5″ and is comprised of 4,404,206 individual knots.  It took the Armenian girls in the Ghazir Orphanage of the Near East Relief Society 10 months to weave.  A label on the back of the rug, in large hand-written letters, reads “IN GOLDEN RULE GRATITUDE TO PRESIDENT COOLIDGE.”

Legislators Send Valadao-Schiff Letter Urging White House To Reject Turkey’s Veto On Display Of Armenian Orphan Rug

Earlier this month, a bipartisan group of over 30 U.S. Representatives – including House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA), joined with Congressmen Adam Schiff (D-CA) and David Valadao (R-CA) in calling upon the White House to reverse its decision to block the public display of a rug woven by Armenian orphans and gifted to President Calvin Coolidge in appreciation for U.S. humanitarian assistance following Ottoman Turkey’s genocide of over 1.5 million Armenians between 1915-1923.

The Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region is the largest and most influential Armenian American grassroots advocacy organization in the Western United States. Working in coordination with a network of offices, chapters, and supporters throughout the Western United States and affiliated organizations around the country, the ANCA-WR advances the concerns of the Armenian American community on a broad range of issues.

Israel Tel Aviv: Charles Aznavour dedicated her song “I have known” in memory of the genocide (Video)

November 24, 2013 By administrator

“I have known”

« J’ai connu »
Charles Aznavour occurred yesterday at the Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv. There is little to say that there is triumph. If, at random from some of the intemperate arton95072-412x328statements, he said be unconcerned about the word genocide, this was not the case in Israel when he dedicated his song “I have known” to the victims of the genocide, including that of the Armenians.

“I have known the chains I have known the wounds I have known the hatred I have known the lashes I have known the insult thirst and hunger I have known the harsh fear of tomorrow. I have known the mowing members broken I have experienced the shame of my nudity I have known the waves of hordes in tears I have known the schlague I have known fear.

What man does to man in defiance of all laws what man does to man the animal is not doing what the man made to the man taking pretext his faith what man does to man it is not dreaming. I have known the crowns of the obscenity of the geniuses of the crime never equal of the body that were herded without names and without life in these pits bass for rotten meat.

I have seen the vermin to feed from body to the bottom of the plants to give the death I have known things in the stench of these virtuosos of the years of horror. What man does to man in defiance of all laws what man does to man the animal is not doing what the man made to the man taking pretext his faith what man does to man it is not dreaming.

I have known women and their breasts dried up the next without flame of children aged under the eye of insensitive genocidal I have known the horrible descent into hell. But despite the worst of fates perverse I have known thy laugh and your gaze clear when in this morbid veritable institute for terminal cases without relief in thine eyes crystal clear I have known love. What man does to man in defiance of all laws what man does to man the animal is not doing what the man made to the man taking pretext his faith what man does to man why does he do that, why?”

SYDNEY, MELBOURNE, Two Events Featuring Genocide Denier Professor Justin McCarthy, has been Canceled

November 21, 2013 By administrator

Jewish body adds voice against Genocide denier McCarthy

justin-mccarthy-american-historian1_1362121360SYDNEY, MELBOURNE—Professor Justin McCarthy, a well funded denier of the Armenian Genocide, has had two planned events in Sydney and Melbourne canceled on the grounds of his unwelcome denialist views.

McCarthy was due to address audiences at the University of Melbourne and at the New South Wales Art Gallery this week, however, each institution revoked McCarthy’s opportunity after learning of his abhorrent denialist views on the Armenian Genocide.

Executive Director of the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC Australia), Vache Kahramanian welcomed the independent decision taken by both institutions.

“Justin McCarthy’s views have no place in Australia and no institution or venue should ever allow a genocide denier to utilise their stage,” said Kahramanian.

“Genocide denial is the final act of genocide against victims and surviving generations. As a proud multicultural nation we should never allow the denigration of the memory of victims of genocide,” Kahramanian added.

McCarthy is due to address a private gathering in Parliament House, Canberra, on November 21st.

ANC Australia has written to all Members of Parliament, informing them of McCarthy’s denalist views and to ensure they do not allow Parliament House to be used as a platform for McCarthy’s denialist views.

Jewish body adds voice against Genocide denier McCarthy
The Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ) has released a powerful statement expressing their deep concerns of Professor Justin McCarthy’s upcoming address in Parliament House, Canberra.

In a media release dated 20 November 2013, the ECAJ accepts the “overwhelming view of history scholars that the killing of hundreds of thousands of civilians in these communities was done with genocidal intent.”

The release goes on to address the issue of McCarthy’s upcoming event at Parliament House on 21 November, which the ECAJ says, will mean the institution is “lending his theories the misleading appearance of official approval. In our view, no part of Parliament House should be misused in this way.”

Executive Director of the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC Australia), Vache Kahramanian stated: “We thank the Executive Council of Australian Jewry for their principled position on this important matter. Venues such as Parliament House should never allow genocide deniers to have a stage.”

McCarthy was due to speak at events at the University of Melbourne and the New South Wales Art Gallery but were both canceled by the respective institutions upon learning of McCarthy’s denialist views on the Armenian Genocide.

ANC Australia has written to Laurie Ferguson MP, who booked the venue in Parliament House for the event, to immediately withdraw his name and revoke access to the venue to ensure McCarthy isn’t allowed to spread his denialist views.

The full text of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry media release can be read below:

The Executive Council of Australian Jewry notes the current visit to Australia of the American Professor of history, Justin McCarthy. Professor McCarthy campaigns around the world against the recognition of the Armenian genocide.

Professor McCarthy does not deny that from 1915 to 1923 more than 1 million Armenians, Pontian Greeks and Assyrians, almost all of them civilians, lost their lives at the hands of the Ottoman Caliphate. However, notwithstanding that this slaughter was on a massive scale over a period of years, Professor McCarthy maintains that this loss of life was not systematic and was not carried out with the intention of eradicating these Christian communities, but was an act of war.

The inherent implausibility of this contention raises many questions about the quality of Professor McCarthy’s analysis. The ECAJ accepts the overwhelming view of history scholars that the killing of hundreds of thousands of civilians in these communities was done with genocidal intent.

Whilst freedom of expression and academic freedom require that Professor McCarthy must be at liberty to put forward his theories, the manner in which he does so must not lapse into racial vilification. Professor McCarthy is a guest of Australia and must respect Australia’s laws during his visit.

One of the venues to which Professor McCarthy has been invited to put forward his views, is a room in Parliament House Canberra, thereby lending his theories the misleading appearance of official approval. In our view, no part of Parliament House should be misused in this way.

Armenia invites Turkish Foreign Minister to BSEC meeting in Yerevan

November 21, 2013 By administrator

November 20, 2013 – 17:33 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Armenia has invited Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu to Yerevan to attend a meeting of the Organization of the Black Sea Economic 172898Cooperation (BSEC) in early December, saying it will be pleased to see the Turkish foreign minister in the Armenian capital, according to Today’s Zaman.

The invitation for the BSEC meeting is sent to all member countries of the organization, but the invitation sent to Turkey added that the Armenian side will be pleased to see Davutoğlu in Yerevan, the report says.

Turkish officials, who talked to Today’s Zaman, said Davutoğlu was considering attending the meeting that will be held on Dec 12. Decision was expected to be taken following the results of the Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents’ talks in Vienna.

The officials, however, noted that the BSEC meeting overlaps with a visit by German President Joachim Gauck to Turkey.

The Sydney Morning Herald: Australia warned off Armenia with Anzac threat

November 16, 2013 By administrator

Turkey has warned Australia against any further formal recognition of the Armenian genocide to avoid undermining its relationship and the special centenary commemoration of AZTACGallipoli in 2015, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

And NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell has retaliated, saying it was ”deplorable” for the 100-year anniversary of the Gallipoli landing to be used for political purposes.

Turkey has also made it clear that NSW MPs are not welcome to attend the ceremony because of bipartisan support for a motion moved in Parliament by Mr O’Farrell in May which recognises and condemns the Armenian genocide.

The warning from the Turkish speaker of the parliament, Cemil Cicek, has come on the eve of a public ballot for 8000 tickets reserved for Australians to attend the special ceremony in Gallipoli on April 25, 2015. The ballot opens at midnight on Friday and closes on January 31.

Speaking to The Sydney Morning Herald through an interpreter, Mr Cicek said:

“One of only two things that could disrupt good relations between Turkey and Australia”, he said, was for Australia “to support any claims about genocide without hearing the Turkish side … this could cause huge rifts between the nations and even jeopardise commemorations around Gallipoli.”

Mr Cicek called on the NSW Parliament to withdraw its resolution, saying reports of an Armenian genocide were ”still inconclusive.”

”We have no problem with Armenian communities in Turkey,” he said.

”We have a problem with the Armenian diaspora who are still propagating this argument.”

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has ruled that only four federal MPs including himself will receive VIP tickets, but they will not be offered to premiers or state MPs.

The NSW Premier said two similar resolutions had been moved in past years without any similar threats being made to disrupt the 100-year anniversary of the Anzac landing in Gallipolli.

”Bipartisan motions concerning the genocide were passed by the NSW Parliament in 1996 and 2012,” Mr O’Farrell said. ”It’s deplorable anyone associated with the Turkish government would try and use next year’s centenary of the Gallipoli landing for political purposes.”

In opposition, Treasurer Joe Hockey called for formal recognition of the Armenian genocide in Federal Parliament, but is now reluctant to make any further comments that might jeopardise his dealings with Turkey in forums including the G20 which Australia will host next year. In May 2011, he said the Armenian genocide ”is one of the least known, least understood and least respected human tragedies of the modern era.”

Armenian National Committee of Australia executive director Vache Kahramanian said it was ”extremely troubling” the Turkish government had threatened to ban NSW MPs who had recognised the Armenian genocide.

”For almost 100 years the Turkish state has continued to deny what is publicly and widely known as a historical reality.”

A spokesman for the Turkish embassy said that while it could not respond to the comments, ”it is highly inappropriate for foreign parliaments to politicise this matter and pass one-sided judgments on a controversial period of Turkish history.”

Australia: Notorious Armenian genocide denier Justin McCarthy to speak at Parliament House (Video)

November 15, 2013 By administrator

By national defence correspondent Michael Brissenden ABC News

One of the world’s most vocal Armenian genocide deniers will make an address at Parliament House in Canberra next week.

Justin-McCarthy-1

The ABC has learnt that a committee room in Parliament House has been booked by Labor backbencher Laurie Ferguson for a special invitation-only address titled “What happened during 1915–1923?”

The address will be given by Profess

or J

ustin McCarthy, an American history professor who many Armenians view with the same disdain as Jews view holocaust denier David Irving.

The ABC has seen an invitation to the presentation to be delivered by Professor McCarthy, who campaigns around the world against the recognition of the Armenian genocide.

April 2015 will be a significant month for several nations. While Australia and Turkey commemorate the centenary anniversary of the Gallipoli landing, Armenians will mark a centenary since the start of the darkest chapter of their history.

Genocide scholars say that from 1915 to 1923 more than 1 million Armenians lost their lives at the ends of the Ottoman empire.

Although it is known as the Armenian genocide, thousands of Assyrians and Pontian Greeks were also killed.

Turkey has long denied the charge and only recently pledged to ban the entire New South Wales Parliament from Gallipoli ceremonies after they unanimously passed a motion recognising the genocide.

A total of 22 nation states, including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Russia and the Vatican, and dozens of state and provincial legislatures around the world, including New South Wales and South Australia, have formally recognised the genocide by Turkey between 1915 and 1922.

International bodies such as the World Council of Churches, the Council of Europe, the European Parliament and the International Association of Genocide Scholars have also recognised the genocide.

Bid for Australian parliament to recognise genocide

Despite some ferocious lobbying form the Turks, there has also been pressure from time to time from some in the Australian Federal Parliament to formally recognise the Armenian genocide.

Treasurer Joe Hockey is of Armenian descent and has on numerous occasions urged the parliament to do just that.

In 2011 he was joined by a handful of others, including Malcolm Turnbull and Labor’s Michael Danby.

Mr Turnbull told the parliament that

the Armenian genocide was one of the great crimes against humanity and resulted in “the elimination, the execution, the murder of hundreds of thousands – of millions of people – for no reason other than that they were different”.

“In this case it was they were not Turks, just as the Jews were eliminated by the Nazis because they were not Germans,” Mr Turnbull added.

Mr Hockey told the parliament: “This is not an issue of definition. Any systematic eradication of a race is genocide, regardless of the political or social unease it may bring.”

Genocide scholar Panayiotis Diamadis says the local Armenian, Assyrian and Pontian Greek communities will be alarmed that such an address is being held in Parliament House.

“Anger, disgust that an official forum – such an official forum as Federal Parliament – is being given to a man who denies the memory of the victims, who denies that this genocide occurred,” he said.

‘No evidence, no proof’, says controversial professor

Professor McCarthy’s views are all over YouTube.

Those who claim there was genocide have “no evidence, no proof that the Turks wanted to act in this way. What is said is based on emotion in this case and a desire to prove there is genocide instead of first looking at the facts”.

The ABC approached Laurie Ferguson’s office for a comment but he is yet to respond.

None of those who have spoken in the parliament on this issue in the past, including both Mr Hockey and Mr Turnbull, wanted to add to what they have already said.

However, they certainly stand by the views they have already expressed.

It is clear the sensitivities surrounding our relationship with Turkey is in focus as Gallipoli’s centenary anniversary approaches.

However, it is understood another attempt will be made to get the Federal Parliament to recognise the genocide – after April 2015.

Author Hasan Cemal: Turkey hasn’t changed much since 1915

November 13, 2013 By administrator

November 13, 2013 – 16:32 AMT
PanARMENIAN.Net – Turkey must apologize for the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire ahead of the 100th anniversary of the massacres in 2015, hc13kasicfotoHasan Cemal, a Turkish journalist, the grandson of the Genocide perpetrator Cemal Pasha said.
“Armenians have been a native population of Anatolia until 1915. Even now Turkey hasn’t understood or shared their pain from losing their lands and property. The border between Armenia and Turkey must be opened, with diplomatic ties to be restored without preconditions,” Cemal urged.
He further called on Turkish government to alter their attitude towards Armenians and issue textbooks reflecting the historic truth. “Does Prime Minister Erdogan give it any thought? Well he should, seeing as Turkey hasn’t changed much since 1915,” T24 quoted Cemal as saying.
Hasan Cemal (born 1944) is a Turkish journalist, writer and grandson of Cemal Pasha. He was the editor of Cumhuriyet from 1981 to 1992, and of Sabah from 1992 to 1998. In 2013 he resigned from the Milliyet newspaper after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had criticised his article supporting Milliyets publication of minutes of a parliamentary visit to Öcalan, and Milliyet suspended him and refused to publish his returning column.
He is best known for acknowledging and apologizing for the Armenian Genocide, a crime which was perpetrated by Pasha. His 2012 book on the subject (written in response to the 2007 assassination of his friend Hrant Dink) is titled 1915: Ermeni Soykırımı (1915: Armenian Genocide).

Turkey’s Gag Rule on ‘Musa Dagh’ Film to be Explored at ANCA Grassroots

November 13, 2013 By administrator

edwinserjFilmmakers Edwin Avaness, Serj Minassians, Producers of “Epic Denied,” are Prominent additions to ANCA Grassroots ‘Film and the Arts’ Panel,

GLENDALE—Efforts by famed director-producer Rouben Mamoulian to produce a feature film based on “Forty Days of Musa Dagh” and Turkish and State Department collusion to halt that production will be the focus of a presentation by Los Angeles-based filmmakers Edwin Avaness and Serj Minassians during the “Film and Arts” panel at the ANCA Grassroots Conference to take place Thanksgiving Weekend.
Through the presentation and discussion of their new film “Epic Denied,” Avaness and Minassians will shed light on Turkish and State Department collusion to force the hand of movie giant MGM to halt plans to produce the Franz Werfel epic novel for the theaters.
“Having Edwin and Serj on the panel will shed light on an important episode in our Armenian-American reality and highlight the lengths that Turkey and the State Department went to in perpetuating Turkish denial of the Armenian Genocide,” said Ara Khachatourian, chairman of the ANCA Grassroots organizing committee.
“This topic is so current as the Armenian-American community has mounted a campaign to stop another of Turkey’s efforts to ‘gag’ the truth by forcing the White House to not allow the display of the Armenian Genocide ‘Orphan Rug’ at the Smithsonian,” added Khachatourian.
Edwin Avaness received his Master of Arts Degree from Northwestern University’s Radio-TV-Film Program, and his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Film and Digital Media productions at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He then joined the executive board of the Armin T. Wegner Society of USA, where the society revives the legacy of the 20th Century humanist through his work. Avaness is a co-creator of the annual humanitarian award bestowed by the Armin T. Wegner Society unto filmmakers whose work advances social and human rights.
Avaness has worked on many projects, including: My Dark Days (2001); The Journey (2002), which was shot in Armenia with a full Armenian cast and crew; Tabriz: Images from the Forgotten World (2006), a docudrama which has garnered popular reception and awards during its tour of over ten film festivals; Virginty (2013), a film highlighting human rights issues; and Damn Foreigners (2014), a feature film based on a true story which highlights the instances of prejudice within the justice system of the United States.
Serj Minassians is a graduate of the Radio-TV-Film department from California State University, Northridge, where he produced and directed his award-winning senior project Stream of Social Intercourse (1990) which went on to win six major awards in various film festivals around the country. He joined the Armenian Film Society and became an active member; he then joined the Executive Board of the Arpa Foundation for Film Music and Art. Minassians is currently a board member of the Land and Culture Organization, an international organization which helps rebuild and preserve historic Armenian landmarks.
Minassians’ work includes: Beyond Commitment (1995), a documentary concerning the volunteers of the Land and Culture Organization; Golden Rose (2001), adapted from a short story by Aramais Hovsepian which tells the story of a lonely poet who is looking for one last chance at happiness; and The Journey (2002), which premiered at the Milan International Film festival and won the Audience Award.
Currently Avaness and Minassians are working on the documentary Epic Denied: Depriving the Forty Days of Musa Dagh (2015) which covers the trials and tribulations of Hollywood’s multiple attempts to produce an epic movie based on Franz Werfel’s bestseller novel.
The powerful duo will take their places at the ANCA Grassroots ‘Film and Arts’ panel alongside Los Angeles based music producer Sebu Simonian of Capital Cities, Emmy-Award-winning filmmaker Bared Maronian, famed artist and comedian Vahe Berberian, and panel moderator Aram Kouyoumdjian, award-winning playwritght and, amongst others.
The successful ANCA Grassroots Conference will return on Thanksgiving Weekend, this time in the heart of Hollywood at Loews Hotel. The event brings together academicians, artists, historians, legal experts and political officials who will make presentations about varied topics regarding the myriad aspects of the pursuit of Hye Tad.
