US House of Representatives John Boehner paid a surprise visit to Ankara on Tuesday #armeniangenocide

April 15, 2014 By administrator

15 April 2014, Tuesday /ANKARA, TODAY’S ZAMAN
Speaker of the US House of Representatives John Boehner paid a surprise visit to Ankara on Tuesday to hold high level meetings with Turkish officials.
BoehnerBoehner held meetings with President Abdullah Gül, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Parliament Speaker Cemil Çiçek. His visit came at a time when two resolutions on the “Armenian genocide” are on the agenda of the US House of Representatives and the US Senate.

Four US Congressmen introduced a resolution to the US House of Representatives on April 4, calling on US President Barack Obama to encourage a Turkish-Armenian relationship based on Turkey’s “acknowledgement of the Armenian Genocide,” in a move parallel to a resolution which was introduced to the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee and passed on April 10.

Following his meeting with Çiçek, Boehner said that the US Congress is unlikely to get involved in “Armenian Genocide” issue, stressing that Turkey has no reason to worry since it is not up to the US Congress to rewrite history.

Çiçek described the Armenia issue as defamation against Turkey as well as a major burden in US-Turkey relations. He also claimed that Turkey is ready to face its history, yet if parliaments make decisions on historical issues, it may hamper bilateral relations between the countries involved.

US Senator Robert Menendez, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and US Senator Mark Kirk introduced the resolution to the Senate committee on April 3, urging the Senate to remember and observe the anniversary of the “Armenian Genocide” on April 24, 2014.

“The Armenian Genocide is a horrifying factual reality that can never be denied,” Chairman Menendez said when he introduced the resolution. “This resolution reaffirms in the strongest terms that we will always remember this tragedy and honor the memory of innocent Armenian men, women and children who were killed and expelled from their homeland. The Armenian Genocide must be taught, recognized, and commemorated to prevent the re-occurrence of similar atrocities from ever happening again,” he said.

The resolution also states that Obama should ensure that US foreign policy “reflects appropriate understanding and sensitivity concerning issues related to human rights, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing and genocide documented in the United States record relating to the Armenian Genocide.”

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said on Tuesday that Turkey will respond if the resolution is passed by the US Senate and reiterated remarks made during a recent visit to Mexico that the government does not expect such possibility. Last week, Davutoğlu called on US authorities to prevent the deterioration of US-Turkey relations after the resolution was passed by the US Senate committee.

The Presidents of Armenia and Turkmenistan praised the warm relations between their countries and reaffirmed their intention to deepen during talks held in the Turkmen capital Ashgabat yesterday.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan have claimed “mutual understanding on a wide range of issues” in a joint statement issued at the conclusion of the negotiations.

The two leaders have pointed to the need to increase the volume and still modest bilateral trade, which has shrunk by over 22% to $ 22.7 million last year. They said in this regard that the Armenian-Turkmen intergovernmental commission on bilateral cooperation should intensify activities to achieve “tangible results in the field of trade relations. ”

Sarkisian and Berdimuhamedov also agreed to set up trade offices in the capital of another. They presided over the signing of an agreement with Armenia and the main business associations of Turkmenistan. The economic focus of their talks was underlined by holding a business forum Armenian-Turkmen to coincide with the official visit Sarkisian in the Central Asian state.

“I am pleased that relations between Turkmenistan and Armenia dynamically developing,” Sarkisian said during a joint press conference held in the luxurious presidential palace Berdimuhamedov.

“We discussed in detail the issues of trade and economic cooperation,” he said. “Unfortunately, trade between our two countries declined last year. But we have experience in cooperation and, more importantly, the potential in the fields of energy, light, textile industry and agriculture. ”

Sarkisian said that he and Berdimuhamedov discussed ways of “development of energy projects,” without elaborating.

The hydrocarbon wealth of Turkmenistan has been the main supplier of natural gas to Armenia in the 1990s, until the Armenian government signed a long term contract with the Russian monopoly Gazprom.

The report of Turkmenistan with Armenia was very cordial in Berdimuhamedov and his late predecessor Saparmurat Niyazov. The latter visited Yerevan in 1996 and received a Mesrop Mashtots order, one of the highest in the State Prize of Armenia, four years later.

Berdimuhamedov was quoted by the official news agency of Turkmenistan as having noted that “traditionally friendly character of the Armenian-Turkmen relations” advanced compared to the last visit Sarkisian in his country. He described the trip as “another important step towards the strengthening and deepening of a successful long-term partnership” between the two former Soviet states.

Bulgarian Nationalists Boycott Turkish Defense Minister Visit

November 16, 2012 By administrator

November 16, 2012, Friday By: novinite.com

Bulgaria‘s far-right, nationalist Ataka party staged a protest rally Friday against the visit of Turkish Defense Minister, Ismet Yilmaz, to Sofia.

The Turkish Minister, however, was met with honors by his Bulgarian counterpart, Anyu Angelov and three companies – from the land force, the air force and the navy. “The relations between Bulgaria and Turkey are an example of good partnership between neighbors and allies in NATO,” said Angelov during his meeting with Yilmaz. The two discussed matters of cooperation in the defense sector.

They also laid wreaths at the Unknown Soldier monument.

Meanwhile, Ataka leaders and followers were seen in the vicinity of the monument, holding signs such as “We cannot be brothers in arms with those who massacred Bulgarians for five centuries,” “Turkey Owes Us USD 10 B for Properties in Thrace,” and “Boyko, Don’t Lead Us to War with Erdogan.”

The rally was attended by Ataka leader, Volen Siderov, and Ataka Members of the Parliament, Pavel Shopov, Desisilav Choukolov, and Ventsislav Lakov.

Siderov complained of the strong police presence, saying it was a disgrace and a violation of the rights of the MPs. He reminded that every time a Turkish official is visiting Bulgaria his party was the only one to voice the truth that Turkey is indebted to Bulgaria.

“We represent the position of hundreds of thousands of Bulgarians who voted for us. There is no difference between the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB, and the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS. Both work not for Bulgarian, but for Turkish interests,” the nationalist leader concluded.
