Officials from the National Museum Park Gyumri sculpture expressed concern about the Church of Tigran Honents, one of the jewels of Ani, deploring the persistent policy of Turkey to falsify the historical reality of this major site Armenian civilization as well as the poor quality renovations announced by the authorities in Ankara. To combat the distortion of history by the Turkish authorities, which is a persistent obstacle to friendship and relations with neighboring countries, the Museum of Gyumri has launched a petition on its website change.org. The organization calls on the Ministry of Culture, UNESCO, the UN and the Committee on the Convention of European heritage, to draw attention to Turkey’s policy on these masterpieces of the medieval architecture. In its appeal, the organization shall indicate: “As a historically Armenian capital, which hosted representatives of different nations, remains an Armenian Ani site, attested extensive documentation and even iconography of the church in question . The approximately 17 frescoes decorating the church walls in particular depict the torments of the first patriarch and founder of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Gregory the Illuminator, which are obvious and compelling evidence of the national and religious identity of the church .
